I'm completely new to Usenet really. Well, I did use it way back in the day when ISP's carried the whole feed and everything was a massive pain in the rear end to use, but I've never really used it in it's current form with modern apps that make it easy to use.

It's like a whole new wonderful land of fun has opened for me!

Anyone using Usenet with Shaw in Canada? So far using the SSL connection seems to prevent any throttling, but I've heard some people claiming that SSL'd Usenet is not being recorded against their bandwidth caps. Anyone know if this is true or not?

I haven't dealt with Shaw(USA Goon here) but SSLed bandwidth will still be held against your caps. SSL just hides which ISOs and horse porn you download, but your ISP will still know you're downloading something.

I get that, but people were saying it was some sort of error on Shaw's part that encrypted Usenet traffic wasn't being recorded for some reason. I guess I'll just have to wait a couple of days and see what my usage meter says.

Most of the info you've got right. You don't even need to bother trying your ISP's Usenet access. Just search on your ISP and Usenet together and I'm sure you'll come across many discussions about what access your ISP provides. Almost as a rule though, most ISP's block access to the binaries section, and I mean, that's the part you want.
