Brock! Oh, man, I'm sorry about your...

She was in a really, really awful backup story in his wedding issue where she'd secretly been alive the whole time and stalking him and having sex with him as random shapeshifted hookups. Apparently they thought it'd read as sweet and not deeply hosed up.

That's a misread (and to be fair, her Wikipedia misreads it too). The flashbacks showing her in that issue took place before her death. It's just confusing because they show the ending of the first Deadpool miniseries where Copycat is mortally wounded, but Deadpool saves her by having her copy his powers. Visually, it looks a lot like when Sabretooth killed her, so people get mistaken. One flashback is about Deadpool obsessing with her after that miniseries, only to reveal that Copycat is watching over him, which is actually kind of sweet, since that miniseries ending was the first non-retcon instance of Deadpool being selfless.

The second flashback is about Copycat taking the form of a love interest that Deadpool (rightfully) killed during a lousy story arc. It fit with the timing, as Copycat was a bit deranged and obsessed at the time and kept hitting on Deadpool in the form of different women. In the original story, Deadpool flat out told her that he knew all those women were really her and they went back to dating until the writer was leaving the book and had to put all the toys back in the chest. Then, of course, Frank Tieri took over immediately after and brought Copycat back into the book for the sake of killing her in a scenario where Deadpool wasn't even allowed to get his revenge.

Since the movie, the only mention of her I've seen is the story where Deadpool believed Sabretooth killed his parents. When he realized Sabretooth didn't, he was all, "Yeah, but you did kill Vanessa and I should probably do something about that."

quote:

As for Venom, well, what else can you do with the guy but go back to the beginning? They kept trying to sweep him under the rug and replace him and reinvent him, it doesn't leave a lot of room for a supporting cast.

It really is nice that Marvel has finally seemed to settle on anti-hero Venom after all this time. They spent so many years trying to shoehorn both Venom as a villain and Eddie Brock as sympathetic lug and threw so many ideas at the wall, only to decide that Venom as Spider-Man's Vegeta has more potential and nostalgia going for it than "YOU RUINED OUR LIVES, PARKER!!" The movie's success only solidified it.

The interplay between Spider-Man and Venom in that Absolute Carnage issue is great because you understand that the two loving hate each other and also hate accepting that they sort of respect one another.

Spider-man just dies a lot in What Ifs because he's in a lot of What Ifs.

Kingpin is the one who dies in every What If.

Yeah. Kingpin, Beast and I think Loki are the most doomed characters in What If stories. Spider-Man just appears a lot.

But what the hell. Here's Spider-Man's fate in every What If appearance. This is from memory, so I might make a few mistakes.

Volume 1

- What if Spider-Man had joined the Fantastic Four?: Survives, but feels guilty over Sue Storm ultimately leaving the team to live with Namor.

- What if someone else besides Spider-Man had been bitten by the radioactive spider?: Stories of Flash Thompson, Betty Brant and John Jameson each getting bitten by the spider. Flash and John die while Betty quits. In every story, Peter becomes Spider-Man anyway.

- What if the world knew Daredevil was blind?: Teams up with Daredevil during the "turning point" intro, but peaces out of the story.

- What if Nova had been four other people?: Peter Parker becomes Nova, but gives it up after accidentally killing Uncle Ben's would-be murderer.

- What if Spider-Man had never become a crimefighter?: Survives and learns about great power/responsibility after turning Jonah into a villain and possibly causing Daredevil's death.

- What if the Avengers fought the Kree-Skrull War without Rick Jones?: Helps Earth's heroes fight off the invaders. Survives, albeit banged up.

- What if the Invisible Girl of the Fantastic Four had married the Sub-Mariner?: Sequel to the first issue. Spider-Man leaves the team within the first few pages.

- What if Gwen Stacy had lived?: His secret identity is revealed and he ends the story on the run from the law.

- What if Captain America had been elected president?: Quick cameo where he warns Jonah that he might get picked as Cap's running mate.

- What if Phoenix had not died?: Isn't in the issue, but the universe explodes.

- What if the Avengers defeated everybody?: I think he's just captured or depowered or something mild.

- What if Spider-Man's clone had lived?: Peter and his clone survive and decide to share the same double-life.

- What if the Avengers had become pawns of Korvac?: Forgot if he's in this one, but the universe is wiped out.

- What if the Invisible Girl had died in childbirth?: Was probably at the funeral.

- What if Captain America were revived today?: Survives as part of Cap's revolution.

- What if Spider-Man's Uncle Ben had lived (and Aunt May was murdered instead)?: Survives and is probably mentally healthier because Ben tells him not to blame himself for bullshit.

Volume 2

- What if the Avengers had lost the Evolutionary War?: Evolves and flies into space with a bunch of other heroes and mutants before becoming one with the universe or some poo poo. I don't know, it's a bad issue.

- What if Daredevil had killed the Kingpin?: Tries to help out Daredevil and maybe bring him in, but Daredevil gets away.

- What if the alien costume had possessed Spider-Man?: By the time the symbiote leaves him for the Hulk, it's sucked out enough of his life force to turn him into an old man. Peter dies the next day.

- What if the X-Men lost Inferno?: Part of a resistance group that is quickly slaughtered by Wolverine's demonic crew.

- What if the Punisher's family had not been killed?: Cameos as a figure that Officer Frank Castle finds more inspiring than the corrupt NYPD. Sounds about right.

- What if Professor X of the X-Men had become the Juggernaut?: Wimps out on fighting Xaviernaut because Xavier will tell on Aunt May. Otherwise survives.

- What if Wolverine battled Conan the Barbarian?: Once again, not in the issue, but the universe explodes.

- What if Kraven the Hunter had killed Spider-Man?: Instead of darting him into a coma, Kraven just shoots him dead. Later, he digs up the body to eat Peter's face.

- What if the Vision of the Avengers conquered the world?: In one story, he lives on as the world (and eventually galaxy) becomes a utopia. In the other, he dies in a nuclear blast.

- What if Spider-Man had not married Mary Jane?/What if Spider-Man had married the Black Cat?: Survives and goes on to start dating Silver Sable.

- What if Wolverine was Lord of the Vampires?: Is turned into a vampire and is later reduced to dust via Darkhold spell.

- What if the Marvel Super Heroes had lost Atlantis Attacks?: Is transformed into a mindless snake man and is later killed by a remorseful Gray Hulk.

- What if the Punisher had killed Daredevil?: Goes on a med-fueled rampage and gets shot in the head by the Punisher.

- What if Captain America had led an army of supersoldiers in World War II?: Considering him a potential threat, the Red Skull (disguised as President Steve Rogers) has Peter Parker killed shortly after he gained his spider powers.

- What if Spider-Man had kept his cosmic powers?: Loses all his powers completely at the end, but fathers a child with cosmic powers.

- What if Phoenix had not died?/What if Phoenix rose again?: Killed by Sentinels.

- What if the Fantastic Five fought Doctor Doom & Annihilus?: Survives, albeit due to some Uatu tinkering.

- What if Spider-Man had kept his six arms?: While he has to leave his life as Peter Parker behind, it's one of his more uplifting endings. It's even suggested that he helped stop Thanos in Infinity Gauntlet.

- What if Venom had possessed the Punisher?: Survives and is very much better off when the Punisher is able to conquer the Venom symbiote.

- What if Cable had destroyed the X-Men?/What if Magneto took over the U.S.A.?: Killed by Sentinels.

- What if Spider-Man had killed the Lizard?: I forget what this one's even about, but I know he survives.

- What if the Avengers lost Operation: Galactic Storm?: Is shown cradling MJ's body moments before Earth is blown up.

- What if the Punisher had killed Spider-Man?: Dies when he gets too close to a pile of explosives made to look like Doc Ock (therefore tricking his spider-sense).

- A What If? X-Men Wedding Album: Yet again, Phoenix blows up the universe.

- What if Spider-Man's parents destroyed his family?: Goes to prison for killing his fake monster parents. Doesn't care about clearing his name and getting off because MJ is dead.

- What if Iron Man sold out?: Survives and becomes one of Iron Man's biggest allies.

- What if Captain America was revived in 1994?: Gets shot to death while suffocating Red Skull with webbing.

- What if the Silver Surfer had not betrayed Galactus?: Doesn't appear, but Earth is devoured.

- What if Spider-Man was a murderer?: Serves time in prison, but is eventually released and presumably goes back to crimefighting.

- What if Blink from Generation X had not died?: Presumably gets killed by Venom, but that reality is undone.

- What if Peter Parker had to destroy Spider-Man?: Flash becomes Spider-Man and Peter is his weapons guy. Peter eventually depowers Flash and becomes a hero with Doc Ock-like spider arms.

- What if the New Fantastic Four had remained a team?: Everyone on the team survives, but they decide to split up.

- What if Storm had the power of Phoenix?: Is put in some kind of frozen cosmic coma for a while, but is fine by the end.

- What if J. Jonah Jameson had adopted Spider-Man?: Has a public identity as he and Jonah start their own version of Heroes for Hire.

- What if the Scarlet Spider had killed Spider-Man?: Gets crushed to death and part of him welcomes it, as he's unable to fight off mind control pushing him to go after MJ.

- What if...starring Spider-Man: Arachnamorphosis: Becomes Man-Spider and is beaten to death by an angry mob.

- What if...starring Juggernaut: The Kingdom of Cain: Not in it, but humanity is wiped out by Sentinels.

- What if...starring Spider-Man: The Men Behind the Mask: Survives, but ends up having to unmask in front of Jonah.

- What if...starring Archangel: Death and disobedience: Not in it, but it looks like Archangel has wiped out seemingly all of humanity.

- What if...starring Spider-Girl: Lived on to be part of a whole new continuity and long-running series about his daughter.

- What if...starring the Avengers (What if Carnage had bonded permanently to the Silver Surfer?): Survives.

- What if...starring Secret Wars: 25 Years Later: Is revealed to be a skeleton manipulated by the symbiote.

2000's Issues

- What if Aunt May had died instead of Uncle Ben?: Survives and continues to fight crime with Ben as his Alfred.

- What If: Avengers Disassembled: Erased by Scarlet Witch's chaos magic.

- What If: Spider-Man: The Other: Refuses resurrection. The Venom symbiote latches onto his prone body and Peter ultimately loses the battle of wills. "Poison" is the Venom symbiote having total control over Peter's body and mind.

- What If: Wolverine: Enemy of the State: Is slashed to death by a brainwashed Wolverine with teleporting powers.

- What If: Age of Apocalypse: Is presumably long dead. Apocalypse has a nest of Spider-Man clones covered in a symbiote web, which the heroes destroy.

- What If: Planet Hulk: Is enslaved by Caiera.

- What If: Annihilation: Survives the big war.

- What If: Civil War: In one of the stories, he's killed. I think it's from an army of Thor clones.

- What If: Spider-Man vs. Wolverine: Spider-Man becomes an expert mercenary spy alongside Wolverine and a Russian lady who sort of resembles Gwen. I think this version of the character got killed off in Spider-Verse later on.

- What If?: The New Fantastic Four: Survives and unlike the earlier take on this story, the team remains together.

- What If: House of M: Loses his powers (along with everyone else on Earth), but his eventual kid has spider powers.

- What If: Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America: Is in prison and will likely be killed by the Skrull invasion.

- What If: Newer Fantastic Four: Survives here too.

- What If: Spider-Man: Back in Black: Goes to prison for killing the Kingpin.

- What If: Secret Wars: Is killed by Beyonder-powered Dr. Doom.

- What If? Spider-Man: House of M: There are two stories in this one. In one, I think reality erases itself for some stupid reason. In the other, Peter becomes the Green Goblin and dies somehow.

- What If? Secret Invasion: Goes to prison for accidentally causing a genocide against the Skrull race and much of the human race.

- What If? World War Hulk: Iron Man's satellite doesn't depower Hulk and Sentry, but instead causes a nuclear blast that destroys New York. Only Hulk survives.

- What If Venom Possessed Deadpool?: Spider-Man was sent falling to his death out of a flying limo while yelling, "Save me, Lord Mephisto!"

- What If? Spider-Man: Grim Hunt: Peter becomes kind of a Madam Web replacement.

- What If? Dark Reign: Spider-Man is only there for like one scene.

- What If? Siege: Venom beats Spider-Man half to death. Osborn stops him for the sake of unmasking Spider-Man out of curiosity. Then he lets Venom finish the job.

- What If?: Avengers vs. X-Men: I don't know if Spider-Man has a specific death in this, but it ends with all humanity wiped out and Logan and Phoenix being the new Adam and Eve.

- What If? Age of Ultron: One of the issues is basically New Fantastic Four vs. Armor Wars, ending with middle-aged hipster Spider-Man sacrificing himself to destroy Master Mold. Two of the issues don't have him, but feature apocalyptic stuff happening.

- What If? Infinity: Dark Reign: With the Infinity Gauntlet, Norman Osborn forces Spider-Man into an endless time loop where he's constantly experiencing Gwen Stacy's death. Osborn undoes this in the end by accidentally preventing his own birth.

- What if Flash Thompson became Spider-Man?: Yes, AGAIN. This time, Spider-Flash accidentally kills Peter in a fit of anger. He later gives himself up to the police and admits that he's not the hero he thought he was.

- What if Peter Parker became the Punisher?: Peter quits being the Punisher and lets go of his anger. Then Frank Castle's origin happens and we have someone to take up the mantle.
