The story linked above isn't the same one, the one I'm remembering wasn't told in the first person, for one. I'll try to find it next chance I get to dig through my storage boxes of old books like that and post the title/author.

I can remember at least three versions of this from sci-fi short stories and novellas. It's a pretty well worn trope. It didn't really diminish the impact of the scene for me, but I can understand why someone would dislike it.
