Right, so I'm doing my very first league, and I took the game's advice of doing an $80M league. I tried to avoid having guys with high WHIP or ERA (for the most part, I guess Schilling's ERA and WHIP may be considered a bit high), and kept a focus on guys with all around games and a tendency to draw walks and get extra base hits. Here's my team https://www.whatifsports.com/mlb-l/decisions.asp Any advice? El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 21:18 on Jul 13, 2013 |

I'm in Polo Grounds. Any suggestions to replace Schilling with, given the finances? Edit: Replaced him with Vern Law. Good HR/9 rates and decent whip El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 04:35 on Jul 14, 2013 |

I just joined a theme league with an 130M cap with the caveat that you get no waiver wire, no trades, and no AAA. http://imgur.com/aYQOARP There's my team. I can give the league # if anybody is interested. El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 16:14 on Aug 1, 2013 |

There's no time based theme like only 1900-1950 or anything, just the rule about no roster changes.

I'd love some. Knowing who's a good value based on what they cost would be appreciated. You may recall I posted my 80M team in this thread previously, and after a hot start we ain't doing so hot. Started 13-5, currently 24-29. Edit: I'd also be open to starting a lower cap league for goons, I was bummed out when I saw I was too late for the one that's going currently. That 130M league has not started yet and I can still pull out.

While I'm picking your guys' brains, what approach do you recommend for 80M leagues on offence? Building a decent pitching staff for less money seems possible but certain attempts to get decent players for little money seems to have floundered in my other league (i.e. Nick Johnson for 3.95).

That sucks because I fiddled with my 80M team a LOT before settling on what I had, and one of my lineups had 4 guys with 40+ doubles but I felt it was too gimmicky and would not work.

For future reference, how do the notable Japanese outfielders in this game like Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, and Norichika Aoki normalize? Is Fukudome worth having around? I ask because I was toying with having a team where my entire outfield and bullpen is Japanese. El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 19:29 on Aug 8, 2013 |

Power of Pecota posted:That seems pretty restrictive, who's in the bullpen outside of Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Takashi Saito? Koji Uehara, Junichi Tazawa, Kaz Sasaki, Hideki Okajima, Shingo Takatsu, and maybe Iwakuma, Ostuka or Nomo as a mop-up or long reliever depending on cap. Sadly you couldn't really have a starting rotation consisting of Japanese pitchers (even though there's enough dudes), I tried that in my free exhibition season and Nomo's rookie year was the only effective one. Did you do that in a league you were gonna sign up for? It doesn't look like you did that in dream team mode. Kawasaki is awesome. I seriously wish he was good enough to be an everyday guy.

I know you guys have said that 1930's era hitters don't normalize well, but does that apply to pitchers as well? Because 1933 Carl Hubbell looks really good.

I dunno. Hubbell's numbers are pretty good in 1933. 23-12, 1.66 ERA, 308.2 IP, 0.98 WHIP, 156 K.

jeffersonlives posted:ERC (Component ERA) is a Bill James ERA estimator based on hits, walks, and dingers, which happen to be the key factors that WIS uses for pitcher outcomes. ERC# is normalized ERC since WIS uses seasonal normalization. ERC# should probably be your default pitching search category although it's not the be-all, end-all. I'm not sure I understand how I'd measure it when putting together a team.

Aside from Addie Joss, who are some of the most effective early 20th century pitchers in the context of the game? I'm mainly talking from about 1900-1940. P.S. I assume because a lot of positional stars from the game in the 1930's aren't effective, there aren't many pitchers from the 1930's to be had that are good, is that correct? Joined a 120M league where all of your offence and pitching has to come from a single decade. Chose the 90's for my offence, and 1900-1909 for my pitching staff. Would appreciate some feedback, planning on making Griffith my closer, have not fiddled with the lineup yet. El Gallinero Gros fucked around with this message at 21:49 on Jan 15, 2014 |

Can you guys make a recommendation to help me make a decent rotation/bullpen for under 40M in an OL? Here's my rotation, but it came in at 43.2 M 1908 Frank Smith 1901 Deacon Phillippe 1906 Jack Pfiester 1918 Allen Sothoron 1918 Jake Northrop (closer) 1908 Jack Ryan 2011 Josh Johnson 2002 Terry Mulholland 1996 Elmer Dessens (the last two are mop up guys for minimum salary) I also would appreciate advice re: whether I really need to spend 40M on my offence.
