Would you recommend joining the HBD or being patient and waiting for the SimLeague or an OpenLeague rush?

You can always do both -- for example, I'm in something like 12 HBD worlds, plus I've got an OL team and a goon league team both going, as well.

HBD is slightly more expensive and is more like a video game 'franchise' mode -- fake players, full minors, draft, IFA, etc. We've got a world that's (mostly) goons that is heading into its 16th season, though I believe all the goons didn't start joining it until about 5 seasons in.

OL/goon leagues are the types of teams that are made from real players throughout history. These are usually easier to get into for new players, since it's made up of baseball players that you've actually heard of and know about! But both HBD and SimLeague stuff can be equally as fun (though I tend to lean more towards HBD, obviously).

Our HBD world is getting ready to start the World Series, at which point we will be very close to rolling over and starting season 16. I've already bugged Bob enough and agreed to GC him, so he's going to come back, plus we will not stop until AV has joined, as well. I'm sure someone would be more than happy to GC (gift certificate...aka pay for) your first season if you are interested.

or am I just way off about how this draft works

I actually like it better as two separate ones now that I am aware that both of them go at the same time, and theoretically, it should speed up the whole process. That was actually my whole concern in the first place...waiting for no reason.

Maybe I'm not giving enough weight to defense, but I feel like there are two clearly better offensive choices sitting out there that I have ranked 1/2, I'm just not sure in which order.

I had thought about Anson, but I've got a couple of other guys in mind. Actually, I can discuss it now because I pick right after this next pubbie. I'm looking at either Roger Connor or Sam Crawford. I had been doing searches by 3B/100 and was looking at guys who showed up highest in the career WAR totals, since I'm thinking of putting this Maddux staff in Petco. I'm not sure which one's the better choice, or if they're going to be so bad defensively that I'd be better off taking someone like Johnny Bench.

Any input from any of our WIS goons would be appreciated!

Also, I can't get the instructions on how to add players for ineligible positions to work :?:

Once you've got the 7-digit code for the player you want to add at the ineligible position, go add a regular player at that position. After you've clicked the green "plus" symbol and added the player (the one you don't want), look in the URL box...the end of the URL should be that wrong player's 7-digit code. Replace it, then hit enter.

This is how I do it on Firefox on my Macbook and it works fine. I noticed you said it wasn't working on IE/Chrome, and unfortunately I can't speak for those two browsers.

Power of Pecota posted:

Huh. I was checking my ideas against the blacklist last night, must have overlooked him. Now that I look, he's right there (with an asterisk, no less!). Must've been pretty late when I was looking at him.

Ah well, I was pretty much choosing between Connor and Crawford at this point, I think (unless anyone else has a better suggestion).

It's true that everyone could, but if you're like us and enjoy having fun, a $255 cap is an empty canvas to do whatever you want.

Also, while there's some big names on the blacklist, you can still build an outrageous, dinger-killing staff.

Chamberlain is one of nine pitchers blacklisted (Maddux, Pedro, Addie, Johnson, Alexander, Mathewson, Gagne, Eck).

I've pulled the team out and will tweak it a little later, probably, but I don't know that I'll be able to be that line-up intensive with it, really. That's a lot of effort. :) The original build was based purely on HR/100# for hitters and the best combo of OAV#/WHIP#/HR/9# for pitchers.

Nah, those were just the positions where I liked their bats better than the natural options there (though I still have natural options there, obviously). Since I had to learn about playing guys out of position for two-man band league, I made sure not to use the seasons that had (bad) ratings at those positions.
