frumpsnake posted:Just guessing, but a bitmap does not need to be decoded/decompressed into memory first. The same reason Windows used to make a BMP out of any JPG/PNG you "Set as Background". Yep, it actually makes sense since it will save a couple of CPU cycles (maybe quite a few) at the cost of a negligible amount of RAM. And since no non-jailbroken enduser will notice this change, why not.

FWIW, the first developer build of iOS 5 is already jailbroken, even cydia works. https://twitter.com/#!/musclenerd/status/78032693262168064

Autoprotect on Cydia is really, really neat. I stumbled upon it while browsing for a different app. It disables your Passcode lock based on the name of the Wifi you are connected to. So for example you can have it disable your Passcode lock at home and leave it enabled everywhere else. There's no doubt in my mind that this is a security risk and can be exploited in more than one way but I'll take that risk.

Ursine Asylum posted:..., and that's before talking about functional modifications like SSH and OpenVPN. OpenVPN recently released a client for iOS, just download the OpenVPN app on the AppStore. It ties into the original Apple VPN framework and it works extremely well for a v1.0. The only minir downside is that you have to launch the connection from the Application itself instead of the Settings -> VPN preference pane, even though it shows up there.
