I feel like Chiptune should be classified as a guilty pleasure of mine.

Not to single you out, Silber, but it seems a lot of people see chiptune as a guilty pleasure and nothing more. It's maybe partly down to the retro-cute image a lot of the artists use, but there is some pretty neat stuff out there that doesn't really gel with the 'cat ears and rainbows' image chip tune seems to get.

Comptroller http://www.cmptrllr.co.uk/ is one such person who seems to aim to make some pretty nightmarish sounding music (Z-Bombs) as well as some neat 'boss music' sounding stuff (Galactic Hero, Heavy Crab).

The Tin Foil Hat Brigade http://www.myspace.com/thetinfoilhatbrigade has an utterly terrifying live show which sadly doesn't quite come off in his recordings, but they're still pretty deranged.

I'm quite partial to Patric C as well. I love the 90s brand of cyberpunk paranoia his music evokes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXN0UgkA330

I'm not going to fault anyone for enjoying a particular aesthetic, but isn't it rather weird to group together quite musically dissimilar artists on the basis that they all use synths that sound like old video games? If that single characteristic trumps all other compositional factors enough to warrant this, then it strikes me that the people who enjoy the genre must have a rather shallow relationship with the music. If not, why not discuss each artist in their respective genre thread as indicated by the music's other qualities, rather than lumping everything together on such a superficial basis?

(Apologies if this has been discussed before in the old thread, but I don't have archives.)

You're right, but I think there's a couple reasons for this that I've witnessed:

I think there's a portion of the audience who do enjoy chiptunes because it sounds like video game music. That's fine for those fans, but it kind of undercuts the acts who don't produce music that sounds like it belongs in a game or it sadly discounts acts like Fuel Diva http://fueldiva.com/ who have a cello player and sound like The Fall in places.

Secondly, it can be pretty hard to find a music community to fit into. I this can lead to fairly disparate acts playing together as they won't fit onto a bill at the local rock club, but three acts might get together and do a pretty good gig at some shared art space or something. I always think it's great when you see someone totally new to chiptune enjoy an act and then later realise what they've been dancing to.

Really, the idea of chiptune as a genre is almost as silly as having 'guitar music' as a genre, but there's a few hurdles to get over before that can happen.

Any UK Goons who like chiptune should probably look into this (free!) festival, http://ultrachipfestival.blogspot.com/ there was a cool variety of acts last year and some really fun, informative work shops. Also I love Edinburgh.

This is fun.

The blog Datathrash (http://datathrash.tumblr.com/) is a good source for harder edged chip based stuff too.
