I'm digging the acoustic cover thread, but I wanted to expand into other genres and such.

So, yeah, if you've got any covers you've recorded and would like to share, post 'em here and give feedback to others. Feel free to crosspost any acoustic covers you'd really like to share, too :)

I'll get the ball rolling with my band's very recent cover of "Gates of Steel," originally by Devo (off the Freedom of Choice album). We made it for a fan-produced tribute album that's coming out this August. It's not super different from the original, but we ended up de-emphasizing the synths and giving it even more energy (plus there's an omnichord in there, too).

I posted this in the Trent Reznor thread already, but my band From Exile released a free EP of Nine Inch Nails covers a couple weeks ago. I played guitar, keys, bass, did about half the vocals, and comixed it.

Is this the "Not Necessarily Beautiful But Mutated" fan comp that they do every year? My band's been on it the last two years! We did "Gates of Steel" last year and "Mongoloid" this year. Are you from Akron/Cleveland?

Holy poo poo I really like the video. Dunno the NIN song, but the playing is very Gilmour.

Did you have to get licensing or permission for it, or are you going guerilla on that poo poo? I've been wanting to do a CD of my covers (almost 100% inspired from the ML Rockstar Series) but get stuck at the licensing/copyright/lawyers part.

My two favorite covers that I did that took the song in a totally different direction are "I Just Can't Wait To Be King" from the Lion King:

And "I Would Die For You" - It's probably the one Prince song I hated. I wanted to re-do it as the feelgood hit of the summer. I play it live at most of my gigs and people dig the poo poo out of it. Kinda proud of what I did.

Thanks, we didn't do any licensing or permissions, obviously we're not selling the EP but between the videos, getting reviews on a few blogs, and playing a release show for it (where we gave away physical copies), we've gotten enough attention that I think it was a worthwhile project.

A cover I made of the song 'Perfect Enemy' by Tatu.

Compositionally, it's essentially identical to the original, the only change made was the vocals (because I felt the song had more in common with EBM/Industrial than pop music, and wanted to see what it would be like with more genre-appropriate vocals)

Last year the other guitarist in my band, and my co-writer, went through a particularly ugly divorce. During the hiatus, I decided to learn to program drums, and get better at recording myself.

Original by Gaelic Storm

This is actually my first attempt at using the drum mapping feature of frooty loops.

That's pretty badass. If I absolutely had to nitpick I'd say the rhythm guitar tone has a tad too much in the way of the wooly variety of low midrange (so the bite of the guitar on "Ruiner" doesn't really come out as well as it could, for example) but that's no big thing. Solid all around.

As for content, aside from the Britney Spears cover I posted a few days back in a separate thread, I've got a few:

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/thepoweroflove.mp3 - Huey Lewis' "The Power of Love" done up in a more hard rock fashion for a different board. I do love that song in general.

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/nutshell.mp3 - Alice in Chains' "Nutshell" with very simple piano, lower-fi drums, and more mellow vocals

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/bridgetocross.mp3 - Black Label Society's "Bridge to Cross"

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/thembones.mp3 - Pretty much a straight cover of Alice in Chains' "Them Bones" done in a 24 hour period from start to finish

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/planetscollide.mp3 - Crowbar's "Planets Collide" - a bit rougher in the vocal area than usual, but I was mostly seeing how it'd turn out with my production style at the time. I still dig it, but there is that disclaimer.

http://www.liemusic.com/MP3/Covers/intothewater.mp3 - This one was a short test of the orchestral samples I installed at the time. Dethklok's "Into the Water" - well, the first minute or so of it, anyway.

The production isn't great, but this is loving hilarious! It needs some super :gay: falsetto vocals, though.

A drunken, chaotic rendition of the Beatles' "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" (sans vocals) that I made last night to test out my new Tascam DP-008 recorder. Just a lark but kinda fun.

Me on everything, using a real guitar and a midi keyboard for everything else.

One of my least favorite bands of all time, Panic! At The Disco, did a song that I actually really enjoyed. So I got crossfaded and covered it last summer.

http://patrickjames.bandcamp.com/track/nine-in-the-afternoon

Then, in February, I got really sad and homesick while doing a recording sesh at a friend's apartment in Berkeley. I was on an Elliott Smith kick, so I recorded this cover of some of his work (bear with me, I mixed the vox too low and didn't EQ them properly; I didn't have as good a grasp on the process as I do now).

Did you autotune the vox? They sound a little bit like it, and that's not really my bag, personally. I'm loving the instrumentation though. Like a boss.

Why change the words? You in denial bro? The only people who need to not sound gay are gay people who refuse to acknowledge their gayness. Whatev bro.

Very nice guitar and good attempt at vocals but, like me, needs a lot more work on the vocals. You shall get there, just stop being sexually insecure ok?

OK HERE IT IS

I've only made a small snippet so far, it took me all this time to work out what the hell I was going to do with it.

It now has a definite direction and I will finish it, I promise.

Edit: Synth voices are a couple of instances of Camel Audio Alchemy player VST which is free and awesome. Reaper is the host, and the controller is a Yamaha P95 which I can't really play very well yet.
