Hey, I dropped in on this thread after seeing the banner ad! I used to have a major passion for old/unusual instruments, 15 years or so ago before I started college. Anyway, I've never been able to settle on an instrument. I took mandolin for a couple of years during college and spent months trying to find a teacher when I moved here (Orange County, CA is not a prime site for folk music apparently) and took more lessons when I did find a guy... but I never practiced enough due to my own lack of motivation. I loved flute when I took it many years ago but stopped playing when I started apartment life due to the loudness. I dug out my two tinwhistles just now and gave them a bit of a cleaning; perhaps I'll translate some of my Irish fiddle-tune knowledge from mandolin to whistle and try the Irish flute or fife if that inspires me. Or I could just play my old flute. The neighbours can't complain if I stop at 9 p.m. I don't think I want a fancy real harp anymore, now that I could afford one... but I do wish I could dig mine out and see what I could do with it edit: I used to read this catalog like porn: http://www.larkinam.com/

I took a look through my little collection of flutes and found this forgotten item, which was a gift I got so long ago that I don't remember where it came from or who gave it to me: Could anyone tell me what the name of this flute type might be? It has an unusual embouchure hole and I can't get sound out of it no matter what I do. I figure if I know what it is I can find info on getting it to make noises. I'm trying to split my breath across the little notch but clearly am not doing the right things with my lips.

I was curious about Irish flute but it sounds like smaller-handed people can have trouble with one. So I figured I could try making one to see if I could play it. I used the instructions on Doug Fipple's site. He makes actual professional-quality PVC flutes that sound a heck of a lot better than mine. Mine isn't too terrible though! It's mostly in tune with itself at least, and I can reach all the fingerholes. My embouchure cut is not perfect yet and the C# to D transition usually fails but I'm working on it. In case anyone's curious how a $2 PVC flute made by a complete non-professional in a couple of hours can sound, I made a lovely .wav of me playing the thing: http://www.mediafire.com/?v3iea39ge29b76c disclaimer: I do not play well Anyway, it's good enough to let me determine that I could probably play a real one! Thanks, musical instrument thread!
