Would like to know if it's too wordy, if I shouldn't be talking about aborted ideas, anything really. All work aside, I love your banner. What is it?

I've heard that about GDC, since a huge portion of the industry is there and everyone is generally drunk/tired/busy and coming back to a weeklong backlog. They don't have to read your application until later if they don't want to. Don't worry about this kind of stuff if I were you dude!

You have to take a punt on people and see what you think they're capable of. I'm sure they know what they're looking for but in my opinion it's a big ask to expect finished environments from someone who hasn't worked at a studio before.

I think that's a good point and you did really well to get to that standard whilst still in college. I just feel like college is there to give you a decent across-the-board grounding in art and we all did weird stuff there that we'd never do now and modelled things we don't anymore but it would be a shame not to have done them. I guess it boils down to getting a job at the end of the day. I just personally don't think employers should look for a rounded-product in someone who possibly hasn't found themselves yet. It's a pretty tough industry to get in to but I do feel that the people who I admire the most in it are the people that have experimented and tried lots of different things. It's a tough argument to make and you could just say "well fine but I'm not going to give them a job over someone who can clearly demonstrate they can do what I'm looking for" and you'd be right so I unno.

I half agree with you devilmouse. I think they should definitely have a good understanding of 3d though otherwise it would be insane trying to train someone up. What if they decide they don't like it? Some investment! And you have to pay the person training them up to do just that. However I do agree that a fundamental understanding of art is invaluable.

Aliginge posted:Just curious but what do the 2D and sprite art professionals in the games industry actually use to produce sprites? Most of photoshop's toolset actually seems counterintuitive to pixel level production, for instance antialiasing when rotating and scaling and the inability to draw straight lines locked at the crucial 26.6 degree isometric angle. You can actually change photoshop to not anti-alias. A lot of people use pro-motion and programs like that. I've been using photoshop at home and it's a bit of a ballache but manageable.

They weren't doing that before the recession, when companies could afford to train employees themselves. Now companies can't afford to provide that training. Seems to me like maybe the universities should start improving their teaching. I think university is there to really give you an excellent grounding in the field but it's not necessarily there to provide the education you'll need to be productive off the bat. 3D art for instance has many intricacies and no graduate is going to be flying from the word go when starting their first job. It'll take training to get that far. I guess it's a bit of both!

I remember when I did my course in 2004 the lecturers said that roughly only one in three of us would find work in the industry. Going on who I knew there and what they went on to do, I think it was pretty accurate. I wonder what it's like now! I feel like in a way we work at a time where its both never been easier and yet never been harder to release a game. You have IOS stuff opening up the market hugely, but that's such a gamble and you can't really employ many people off of it. Then you have what seems to be a big drop off on published work. Like the 3DS is selling amazingly at the moment but publishers seem reluctant to pick it up.

Join a good 3d forum like Polycount or our one in CC.. and join a mod for a game you like. If you have any questions or need help don't hesitate in asking someone or consulting the forums and youtube. If you seriously work towards it you can probably swing the stuff you make as your study projects and leap ahead of everyone else.

I love my I Intuous 3 a4 and wouldn't change it for the world. At home it doubles up as an expensive luxury table mat so it has versatility on its side. I think using a tiny bamboo is hard work when using it professionally, so top marks there, but I think if you were to get an a4+ of anything you'd see your workflow skyrocket.

Hi guys, all this Covering Letter and Resume/C.V talk has been really interesting. My friend is a games programmer but sadly not on SA yet. Does anyone have a Covering Letter and C.V they'd be willing to send to me (so I can send it to him) to provide him with some examples. He has about 4 years experience, but it's always nice to see what other good people have come up with!
