Vasudus posted:No, you can start prior to being out. However, he needs to make sure that the very second he does get hit DD214, the VA gets it and confirms it so that he can get BAH. Yup. Fill out the worksheet on their website and send it in. It takes a couple of weeks to process, but mine came back much faster than I expected (this was April, FYI).

Who do I contact at the VA to make sure they have my 214 on file? My tuition has been paid, but I haven't seen that sweet, sweet, BAH yet. I realize it's unreliable and can arrive basically whenever, but I'd rather make sure everything is set up correctly instead of waiting.

Pell Grants aren't available, it shouldn't impact unemployment since it's an education benefit not income, and I don't know about the rest. But you'd be less than a full-time student, so that may change your eligibility for certain programs (yellow ribbon, etc).

But I could have easily been misinformed. It's whatever your school considers full time. But yeah, the hours are not equivalent to undergrad hours. My point was that if you're spacing a 2 year program out over 4 years, you're taking half-time.

It's pretty easy to do. I'm guessing that each one is counted against your time separately? IE, if you do two courses for a month, that counts as two months?

Then use tuition assistance and save your GIB because you can get hundreds of dollars every month if you use it AFTER active duty. Finally got around to checking my bank account for GI Bill moneys, and it wasn't quite what I expected. I got two deposits for $250 each on one day (I assume this is for books), and a week later a deposit for $606.10. I assume the last one is BAH, but iirc the letter said 673.xx. Is BAH prorated or something? I'm doing a strictly online class.

Vasudus posted:Yeah, it's prorated to the day. So if your class starts on say, the 5th, you get ~83% of the BAH for that month. Being an online class, it would be off half the national BAH, working out to 673.44 for a full month. The 606 is probably correct in your case. That's what I thought, but all my TAP paperwork/notes is boxed up in a moving truck somewhere. I'll double check the start date, but that's probably correct. Thanks.

YOU GET THE POST 9/11 ANYWAY! Even if you enrolled in MGIB. I'm doing it right now, and so is half the forum. If you use all your Post 9/11 benefit, you also get your $1200 back. There are ways you can use both, but I'll let someone else try to explain it, I didn't really understand it. Edit: MEPS doesn't know poo poo, Finance doesn't know poo poo, and personnel doesn't know poo poo.

poo poo I haven't even applied for a job since getting out. Applied for one beforehand, but the start date was before I even got back from deployment, so that didn't work out...which sucks, it would've been about 130k for a year contract in loving Seattle. But life owns.

My school probably charges about 4 grand for 18 credit hours, and to go above that I'd have to file a waiver. Will 9/11 cover that? If it's a state school, they cover it. If it's private, that's the 17.5 limit.

If your school is already paid for, what will happen is the VA will pay them again (probably 9 weeks from now, assuming you apply for Post 9/11) and that balance will be refunded back. No Pell grants for grad school. Your undergrad GPA will only hurt you in your applications for schools, not for your benefits. If you get into a program, you have to keep your grades up though.
