Has anyone purchased any of the Third Man Live series Vinyl? What is the quality like on these? I understand that it's direct to tape. I would like to get the Jacuzzi Boys one but $15 seems a bit expensive for 6 songs or is it double sided.

I have a few of them. They sound good. The recordings are taken directly from the soundboard so it's not a lovely bootleg sounding thing if that's what you're worried about. The show you're buying could be different, but as far as I know they're all double sided. I don't know if this will be a deal breaker, but they don't have cover art. It just comes in a generic black cover.

1000 isn't a small print run, and it IS pricey even for the packaging/color (I bought one), but they basically self-release along with Makeup And Vanity Set on their "label" so they don't have access to a lot of resources for this sort of thing. The price his high but probably not unreasonable. They'll probably repress it cheaper on black anyway.

Protomen fans DO have a lot of disposable income, though. Their DVD kickstarter hit like $35k in a week. If they can squeeze that a little, good for them.

I'm making a career of evil.
I managed to find a sealed copy of The Who's Tommy in a thrift store this weekend.

This is a Decca pressing (DXSW 7205). I'm not sure if it's really worth anything, as there are a couple of breaks in the shrinkwrap and scuffs to the jacket where it's exposed, but I snagged it anyways since it's guaranteed to be unplayed. Should I put this aside and find one from ebay to listen to?

No, you should remove the shrink wrap and then listen to it. It's not valuable, but an unplayed copy of a great album is a very worth while find in any case.

In other news, this guy I know who has a bunch of old records might have an original Blue Monday 12" single with the die cut sleeve. So I'm hoping I can make that score.

I posted about this in the old thread when the digital version dropped, but now that the vinyl is here I feel it's immensely more relevant:

My band's debut EP arrived today in the mail! All 500 copies of it. This is my first experience pressing a vinyl record, and I'm beyond proud of the final product; from the recording to the mastering to the whole package, I couldn't have asked for a better turnout. My jaw hit the floor when I spun it for the first time.

It's 4 songs, pressed at 45rpm on sun orange vinyl. You can get it here:
http://conveyor.bandcamp.com

(or just download the mp3s for free, yo).

If you live in or around NYC, stay tuned; we're having a homecoming release show when we get back from tour in early September.

Socket Ryanist posted:

In US currency? Yes, I was surprised to spend 12$ on a new LP with full color printing on the jacket and insert the other day for a band on tour but realized it was a one-off repress of their old LP limited to 300 on a rush job for their tour (Night Fever).

If you spend a lot of money as a band on fancier printing, packaging, colored vinyl, small runs, long/expensive recording, expensive mastering, and expect to somehow make money on your release, yes, you charge more. Is it wrong? No, depends on your target audience and expectations. You can charge literally whatever the hell you want as the musicians, because it is your work.

This I do find offense with, price never dictates quality. Not to be a dick either but you live in New York, where there is some sort of artificial confusing culture tax associated with literally all music and it sucks record digging.

It's a limited run and it looks like they put a lot of effort into the packaging. The first DOM ep my friend got me was about 10 bucks and pressed on recycled bowling ball. IMO $10 isn't that far out there for an EP. If it was some mass produced thing with super plain packaging $10 would be on the high side and I probably wouldn't' get it.
