Hey Farts Domino, I think there should be a section in the OP about where to look for new records and how to shop for older ones. Most people don't have the luxury of living near a store that actually sells new releases/reissues or even used ones.saberwulf posted:Wish I had spending money, I'd go out and buy a good turntable (mine is really terrible for some reason and I'm pretty sure my records are warped) and speakers, go buy ELO Time and just listen to it over and over and over again. Sometimes through trial and error, I'll get it set up to where it sounds good, but eventually, it slips out of position and stops working. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, since I know very little about turntables. Is there some trick to positioning the cartridge just right? It's either the tracking force, the height of the tone arm, or both (unless it's a technics where you can't adjust the tone arm height). Look up what make and model cartridge you have and it should tell you the proper tracking force weight to set your tone arm on. Level the tone arm height and with the counter weight, then set your tracking force to what the cartridge manufacturer told you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6PDs49u0BM

No need to be condescending about someone missing a release and lamenting the fact that it's no longer available anywhere. Not being condescending - just didn't know if you originally knew where to find it when it came out. It can be tough keeping up with these things.

Not much of a metal selection but I found Queen's self titled debut for $15. Radio copy only with a list of suggested songs to play. Nice record too -- Queen logo is embossed. Plus this album rules and not a lot of people I try know that Queen isn't just a bunch of bullshit sports anthem hits. Most used record shops don't care about selling them even though technically they shouldn't. As a buyer I try to avoid them because more often than not whatever track was the single or most popular tends to be worn to poo poo even if the rest of the record looks and sounds ok.

To be fair though I do have a couple promo copies in my collection that are absolutely fine (one's I didn't even realize were promos until I got home). answersyouseek posted:$10 for an EP? What the gently caress is that about? It's a limited run and it looks like they put a lot of effort into the packaging. The first DOM ep my friend got me was about 10 bucks and pressed on recycled bowling ball. IMO $10 isn't that far out there for an EP. If it was some mass produced thing with super plain packaging $10 would be on the high side and I probably wouldn't' get it.

If you leave your slip mat exposed all the time, the side you don't play first gets insta-dusty. I guess if you don't have a dustcover, the alternative is to take off your slip mat when you're not playing a record and bag it. But still - in my old rear end house there's tons of dust and on the play side it will start collecting it like a magnet.

Which college out of curiosity? Former Northeastern kid, here. Cheapo Records in Central is decent as well as Weirdo Records (although Weirdo has a really eclectic kind of theme going on). The Newbury St. Newbury comics is actually pretty decent for used but the Harvard Sq one has a slightly better "new" section. Outside the city though there's not much vinyl at other Newbies though, but you probably won't care unless you find yourself stranded in the burbs.

Yeah I really have no problem with the Insound dudes popping in here to say there's a sale once in awhile and I live near tons of local shops. Let's not forget that most of America does not have the good fortune of living near a store that sells physical music that isn't a big box retailer like Target, Wal-Mart, or Best Buy, let alone one that sells vinyl - even harder to find a record store that actually sells *new* vinyl. And if I have the choice between Amazon and Insound I much rather give my money to a bunch of hipster rear end music nerds in Brooklyn who love music as much as I do. Plus they sometimes have specials and exclusives that you can't get from big A. But yeah - local first makes the world go round and your community a better place. fozzie dunlop posted:

It's called Newbury Comics and there's one on Newbury St. and one in Harvard Sq. Somerville Grooves has a fair bit of stuff in that vein (at a premium) compared to other mostly used stores, but not nearly as good of a selection as Newbies. The Insound people tossed in some really clutch coasters with our new Rapture album order (we respect wood...) But...sometime on the B-side on the first record my stylus decided to poo poo the brick and the jams had to stop immediately. So thinking about just updating my cartridge rather than pay almost the same cost of a new cartridge to replace the Shure M97xe. Right now my main contender is the Audio Technica AT120e/t but if anyone can recommend something comparable in the ~$100ish range to consider that would be lovely. Listen to a lot of electronic/new wave/indie rock bullshit with dash of folk and classic rock and my speakers are a couple of polk monitor 40's paired with a smallish powered polk sub.

In New Orleans for a business trip and made a pit stop at Louisiana Music Factory. Definitely one of the best shops I've ever been too. A must for jazz and soul - ok enough rock section. But what I really dug their good selection of local stuff. I went there after I made a stop at Peaches and just found their prices way too high for my blood - decent selection though. Ended up picking up a copy of Quintron and Miss Pussycat's Swamp Tech for 15 bucks, which rules because I remember finding in the Newbury Newbies in Boston for twice that much.
