6. I have a huge interest in the Sinatra/Rat Pack/Louis Prima days of Vegas, and was looking for clubs/bars/restaurants that exude that flavor, though google and all of my research is somewhat failing me in this category. Any ideas?

If you wanted a room Sinatra actually stood in, you just missed the boat by about nine months, as the Sahara and it's House of Lords steakhouse was pretty much the last operating hotel of the rat pack era that they ever frequently visited (Tropicana, not really.)

If you just want the mood and vibes and historical relics in a contemporary setting, there's a few places to do that. I know that Encore has an actual Sinatra-licensed restaurant that serves mostly high class Italian food (there's a lasagna in there, but it's $35) with bits of his career all over.

3. I've never really had the opportunity to enjoy the nightlife in Las Vegas, when I was there with my girlfriend she's a local and wanted to do things like this piano bar at Harrah's and some Carnival/DJ thing outside (I don't remember). So here's my problem, I'm not going to wear loving leather shoes to the bar. I'll put on a nice shirt and some clean kicks, but gently caress "club shoes." - Where can I go and blend in or drop the doorman a :20bux: to avoid having to wear stupid uncomfortable shoes?

...

I have starry eyed delusions regarding Vegas in that light. I'd really like to wear a sports coat or a vest the whole time with my jeans, but as has been stated earlier in the thread, I'd be the one who looked out of place. Hoping I don't lose my money too quickly this time. The last trip was pretty short. :ohdear:

If you're going out to the clubs be a big boy and put away your Vans for a night. You don't have to wear faux-gator supershiny "club shoes", just go buy a decent pair of black leather shoes like grownups do. You can get comfortable ones if you go somewhere respectable instead of shopping at Aldo. And they will look good with your vest or sports coat, which won't put you out of place at all in Vegas unless you're trying to fit in with 16-year-olds.

I love my white sneakers as much as the next guy, but if you want to wear them out in Vegas, go to Carnival Court (which is awesome and way cheaper than the megaclubs) or other more casual bars, or strip clubs. If you're going to go drop insane amounts of money at the clubs you might as well dress up a little.

Speaking of Carnival Court, I was there at the beginning of the month with about 7 people. As we were entering they told my friend he could not come on because he had on a white t-shirt. They said no solid white t-shirts allowed. So we discuss how loving dumb they are for having the rule in a respectful way and the bouncer/manager actually offer him a new t-shirt so he could get in. So we follow him to their storage space (door next to the camera shop there that just enters into a big room) and he gave him... a white t-shirt. Only difference was on the back toward the neck it had a Bud Light logo no more than two inches wide. He was now allowed to enter :psyduck: So basically, I could have put some hot sauce on his shirt and he would have been fine. We ate at the little taco/sandwich shop in front of the entrance.

But definitely check out that place, the live music make all the difference. Plus it is free to get in, it is outside, and generally is just awesome.

We had a renovated room too, and no joke... it was a nice room. We met some girls there that were in a non renovated room and it was fairly crappy. We were in the rooms that use the "center elevators" if that helps. And the property has improved soooo much since I stayed 8 years ago. And cab rides further up the strip were cheap.

I might have some photos, I will check. But the entire casino is brand new and they have a giant circular bar near the entrance with tons of bar seating and surrounded by plush couches with tables. The bar on top of the tower 110 stories or so owned rear end, especially when they had a DJ.

I'll give a trip report too. My wife and I stayed at the Wynn, and everything was good with the room. I was there last Fri-Tues, and she was there Fri-Thurs, since she had a conference.

The Wynn sportsbook was so-so, $300 required football bet to get a drink coupon, although if you played penny slots outside they gave you free drinks. $25 dollar craps tables, and everyone was cool teaching you to play if you didn't already know craps (we didn't), including the players. We lost a couple hundred bucks between us when we learned, so no big deal at those rates. Would have made money if we took 6/8 advice earlier... My wife made a lot of people a decent amount of money on her first roll.

We didn't end up gambling there much. We ended up spending Saturday doing a Grand Canyon plane commute followed by a copter/walking tour, which was good, although a bit colder than we expected. I recommend the copter tour, it was awesome, if short. The plane rides were nothing special, except they confirmed what we read on the internet about the skywalk - namely it is tiny. So that was a good trip, although it was one of the more expensive ones. Then we went and saw a comedian at the Hilton. He was fine, the place seemed okay and we heard it and the MGM were where you should be for football.

Sunday we spent at the MGM book for football since it was walking distance, instead of walking plus monorail. $125 minimum bet or a drink ticket or $5 minimum horse race bet (no idea what the corresponding horse bet was at the Wynn). So, after some football bets, we would randomly make $5 favorite / grey horse (my wife's system), funny name show bets and get drink tickets whenever we wanted. Pro tip: if you're getting beer, walk to the sports bar behind you as you will get pint aluminum bottles instead of 12 oz beers. :science: Also make friends with people around you, they'll just give you drink tickets. then you can pass on the wealth to people that join you later or whatever.

At one point here, we discovered that the outback above casino royale has normal prices on everything, so we ate there. Perfectly normal outback, good views of TVs showing your wife's 10 game O/U parlay that was 5/5 on the first games and 4/4 on the second when you leave to eat fall apart when there is a random kick return for a touchdown in the Cinci/Seattle game. That turned out irrelevant though, since the Dal/Phi game hit the under. Some consolation, I suppose.

After Sunday night football, some of her coworkers had shown up and been hitting the drink tickets, but then wanted to learn craps. So, we walk over to Casino Royale where they have $5 tables. Everyone makes money, or loses less than $100, and drinks for free. :smug: The casino is predictably rundown, but hey, $5 craps on the strip, what do you want???

Then Monday hits and she goes to the conference. I check out the Ferrari/Maserati show room in the Wynn, which is kinda cool, but nothing like say, the Corvette factory in Bowling Green. there are some Ferraris, some Maseratis, and some other stuff. Maybe bigger if you're a Ferrari freak, but I'm not, and should have just gambled that :tenbux: on something stupid.

I played the Wynn noon no-juice rebuy ($125 entry, one $100 rebuy if you bust pre break) without clarifying when you could buy in. I could give a stupid bad beat story, but who cares? The important thing is that the talent level wasn't that much higher than my usual monthly league and playing too tight screws you on rebuy, since you can't do it post break. I should have clarified that ahead of time. Also, there were roughly 35-40 people that entered, no idea on how many rebought. There's another one (Mirage???) that is similar pricing, no rebuys, and it usually gets 100+. I didn't want that time commitment. The room was fine, dealers were fine, and I'd do that again for a short tourney.

Then I flew home Tuesday. Fine trip, 4 days was enough, and just like its been 5 or 6 years since we last went, it'll probably be the same unless I go for a convention or she does.

Cosmopolitan is an awesome place to visit as the guest from another hotel. Their food & beverage service is great and if you like the indie-hipster vibe they have it in spades. But their hotel operation is a serious sore spot and you're probably the, let's see, 16th or so such story I've heard in this first year of it's existence.

I wish i had thought to check this thread before making all my reservations

I'm flying over to US for the first time in a bit over 2 weeks and i'm staying for 5 days in vegas, i've reserved rooms at the All Suite Hotel Rio.

This is the first time ever i'm on a vacation on my own and the first time i'm in the US.

So a few questions/myths i'd like clarified

1) in the US european debit cards are prettymuch useless and creditcards are king
I've heard this from three different people so i filled out the application to get a visa just for this trip.

2) it's better when reserving a hotel to get the basic room and then ask for an upgrade once you arrive since it's cheaper than just booking a better room

3) public transit in the US is nonexistent so you'll prettymuch end driving a taxi around for your whole stay in vegas since you don't have a lisence

I booked a non strip-view room at PH and left a comment on the reservation that I wanted an upgrade. I got it and didn't even have to grease any palms. I did check in like four hours early which probably helped. In Vegas the bus system seems pretty adequate but I think I'd rather take a cab. If you stay on the strip you don't really need transportation though.

EDIT: Oh, and one thing that helped was calling and using my player's card number. Even though I mostly gamble penny slots, using my players card number saved me like 45 bucks a night on my room vs the regular Internet price. Obviously this only helps if you are returning though.

Sounds good. In the US, Visa also handles most of our debit cards and so there's a whole in-network thing since they're accepted at any Visa terminal.

Possible. Depends on the size of the upgrade.

By European standards, all public transit outside of New York and possibly Chicago is total crap. But, all the tourist draw of Las Vegas is clustered into one big stretch of road (it's not impossibly long, but it is longer than it appears because the buildings are massive.) There's a few hotels offshooting here and there onto side streets, and Rio is one of those hotels. However, it has a few semi-reliable shuttles to corporate sibling properties on the Strip like Harrah's and Bally's.

The public transit people runs buses up and down the Strip with pretty good frequency, with one route stopping at every hotel and taking forever to get anywhere, and the other one making fewer stops and thus less time spent in congestion. While it's lovely to live here on transit, like everything else in the city they coddle the tourists with frequent, but very expensive, routes that serve to move people between casinos. There's a couple of free overhead trams along the Strip, too.

Basically: So long as you want to gamble, drink, see tits, lose money, etc you'll be all right. If you plan to leave that bubble and come out to where the residents live you're kinda boned. And you can't go out into the desert to see the natural wilderness at all.

There's a ton of McDonalds on the Strip, and down and across from Rio at the Palms. I'm not sure what European country you're from, but The Rio also has a special Burger King restaurant concept inside of it called the "Whopper Bar" (Whopper being one of their burgers) that is unique even among American towns.

Walmart might be only a few miles away but chances are it's in a not so great part of town, and you'll have to rely on the absolutely bonkers/poo poo residential public transit to get there.

For convenience's sake, if you want to just see a big American retail box store, Flamingo Road (the street that the Rio sits upon, and which connects it to the Strip) has a really frequent bus service that you can take east to Maryland Parkway where you can find a Target. They're the biggest Walmart Clone, whose niche is having better public relations and more fashionable marketing than Walmart's southern Ma and Pa Kettle appeal. They're just as big, boxy, anti-union, and full of Chinese crap though. And you'll just need to take one bus route, which is a godsend.

Also possibly appealing, on a somewhat distant trip south from the casinos (on the same road, but you'll need wheels) is a Fry's Electronics, which is a big warehouse full of nerdy computer stuff in addition to mainstream gadgetry like TVs and video games.

Do you happen to know which Wal-Mart you're going to? I mean where it is/what cross streets? The closest one I can think of to the Rio would be Spring Mountain and Rainbow. That's a hefty uphill walk, but if you take Spring Mountain all the way up, at least you get to see Chinatown.

Uh, okay. :psyduck: I'm having flashbacks to my Canadian friend and I being chased by thugs up Paradise because his t-shirt angered some gang members and being from relatively crime-free Canada he had never encountered any til then.

Google estimates a 4 mile walk which is crazy most times of the year (don't know when you're coming) and drat near impossible during an entire block of months.

A few tips: People drive highway speeds on regular roads, insane speeds on highways, and many of the cars are stolen so some of the driving resembles that Finnish race I saw on TopGear where children and grannies were driving junkers to destruction. If you cross the street anywhere but a crosswalk, the Nevada legal system believes it's your fault that you got hit by a car; so don't try to imitate the impoverished minorities you see jaywalking on even the busiest streets.

It's a 30 minute bus ride you could do with a 10-30 minute transfer (Flamingo and Rainbow), and the bus fare is something like $3 for 2 hours of riding and $4 for 24 hours (which doesn't cover the Strip tourist routes but I think you can add it on for something like 50 cents a ride.) It's going to be a lot better than walking.

I've waited for a bus on Flamingo/Rainbow and it was okay except one time at dusk where I watched two men try to persuade a woman into sex from their cars and then pull over after she refused, at which point I quickly left the scene because there were many other strangers and I'm a coward. The general rule when not owning a car in this town is that you're probably okay if the sun is up and you're not anywhere known to be stupidly criminal (such as north of the Stratosphere). The Strip itself is as safe (or not, depending on the media's idiotic scare of the month) as it always is no matter the hour of the day.

(PS: If I make it sound like the town is a mafia movie writ large, it isn't; it's just everyone is driving cars and safe in their auto-bubbles as the sidewalks are prone to a lot more criminal activities from an increasingly unemployed, desperate population in an area where seedyness is somewhat glorified. Just be careful.)

That area you're considering walking is mid-level shadiness in Vegas. Not as bad as north Vegas but not the nice part of the city. And you're going to be miserable because there's loving nothing to see there, I wouldn't bother. Just take a bus, you'll get to experience the horrible public transit most of the US has!

Vegas is not a walking city at all outside the Strip/Fremont downtown area. There are literally big concrete walls surrounding most neighborhoods. Don't bother. If you want to go for a hike head to Red Rock.

Tuesday: take the bus to the strip and spend the whole day there sightseeing and shopping
Wednesday: during the day visit the gold&silver pawnshop (brother and i are fans of the show and he asked me to pick up something for him from there, i know it's a cesspool in real life and would rather maintain the illusion) and in the evening spend the rest of my travel budget at the casino

Well if you just want to see guns behind glass, rifles and like are sold in the sporting goods section of that Wal-Mart you're going to. That's increasingly uncommon in parts of the US, since it's up to the state and mass-market guns make people nervous.

You're probably better off at some niche boutique store if you're really into that, though. Vegas has a whole cottage industry in people spending money to fire guns, including occasionally ridiculous hardware that has no purpose outside of a movie prop or military deployment. As always, it depends on how much money you're willing to spend.

I don't know much more than that. I'm a Lefty McLefterson who doesn't like the second amendment. Maybe a TFR crossposter will show up here or something.

Vegas lover, gun lover, occasional TFR poster here. Yes you can unload any amount of ammuntion you would like with basically any weapon you would like in Vegas. With no training and it is something you must do. MUST DO.

As has been noted The Gun Store is one option, they advertise the most, have the best selection, and likely charge a little more than everyone else but it is near the strip. Take a look around their site and have your mind blown:

There is also another place that that takes photos of all the attractive women that visit to shoot and posts them on the site, so enjoy this one as well:

Any other questions?

Saturday, arrive at airport at 8pm local time, go to hotel and sleep

Don't. Jet lag will screw you and you'll wake up at 3am and be a zombie for the rest of the week.
Call your folks and then hit the strip, get stupid drunk, pass out and then wake up at 6am because timezones. I did this. Worked out great, my friends tried to do what you want to do and ended up hating themselves.

Plus it's saturday in vegas, who the gently caress wants to miss that? That's when all the action is.

edit: Internet in the rooms is crazy expensive, like $25 for poo poo wifi that keeps dropping out.

Sunday: spend the day at hotel recovering from jetlag and checking out the shopping opportunities there

Fashion Show Mall, Planet Hollywood, Caesars, Bellagio... every drat casino has shopping in some form. I took a cab out to some outlet mall place that kinda blew but my swedish friends wanted to go to.

re: EU Debit cards.
They work in ATMs, but better to change a fuckton of money ahead of time since the ATMs in the casinos charge like 5% for cash withdrawals, plus who knows what rate your bank will give you. Get a credit card anyway, since they work better with hotel reservations (A large reserve for a hotel room will gently caress with your bank account, whereas it doesn't affect you as much with a credit card).

A VISA debit card looks more or less like a credit card to the processing system.

I've already got myself a visa credit card with 1000e limit for the trip and i'll be using that to pay for everything i can, i also forexed a few hundred in cash just incase.

The internet might be expensive (i think i checked it to be around 13ish dollars per day) but calling home according my phone companys rates can be up to like one euro per minute

And as for the first night i guess we'll see what will happen.

Goodnight Moon

Nap Ghost
Got a stupid question but I'm having a brain fart. I had planned to go to Vegas December 24th and return on the 29th. I was checking Expedia for hotel + flight and a couple days ago I got a price of about 800 bucks for a room at the MGM. Now I check and it's over 1000. I was thinking Bellagio though that's getting more to $1500 or Signature/MGM for $950. But then I have to add $100 for resort fees and get to $1050. I've checked out trip advisor, orbitz, and so on. Are there any other sites if convenient to list that might offer good deals?

Otherwise I might just suck it and pay $650ish for a 3 star on the strip like the Rivera...that's a bad idea, right?

Three star hotels are fine. If you spend more than 3 hours a day in your hotel room, you suck at Vegas.
