And as for the first night i guess we'll see what will happen.

You may want to consider getting that limit increased and/or bringing more cash if you're going to be in Vegas for five nights.

I'm going to spend the weekend in Vegas in a couple of weeks, and I'm wondering about activities/shows/shopping etc. What are good areas for shopping (looking for upscale clothes, electronics and hiking gear)? What are good clubs for picking up girls, or what other places are good for meeting people who want to party?

I've heard that the first weekends of December in Las Vegas are the worst of the year, because it's mostly empty and many of the shows are on hiatus/retooling. Is there any accuracy to that?

Ugh we are going this monday till thursday. Its not that I dont want to go, its just we planned on going with my girlfriends parents and they had to back out after we got rooms and tickets. So instead of losing 400 bucks on our deal, my girlfriend and I decided to still go on our own.

Honestly I want to limit my spending to 1k. So I am assuming not much gambling? Shows are actually pretty expensive right? Also will it be depressing empty? I know its the off season but I kinda like playing craps with a bunch of rowdy people.

We do plan on going downtown this time around to check it out, I havent been there. Would it be advised to just hop in the cab from our hotel? (The Mirage) to downtown? I already got a tip on a nice bar called The Griffin.

If you're on the strip, you've got four really good, mostly upscale malls you can window shop at - Crystals (City Center), Fashion Show Mall, Forum Shops (Caeser's Palace), and whatever the mall is called at Planet Hollywood. In all honesty, I spend almost zero time on the strip - I moved here five years ago and I think I've actually been to places on the strip about a dozen times. But those malls should cover what you're looking for.

The best way to limit your gambling is to only bring cash and your ID to the casino, and set a daily limit to how much you can lose. Leave the credit/debit cards back in the room. Shows will run $60 to $150 a ticket, depending on the show. It's definitely not the tourist season, but it's never empty.

Downtown rules. The Griffin is slightly outside of the main downtown area (Fremont Street Experience). But if you're going over to that area, you may as well go across the street from the Griffin to Insert Coin(s).

Depends on what you mean by "can't miss".
- If you just want "nice", Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Aria, Cosmopolitan and the Wynn are your best bets.
- If you want cool decor, then it's Venetian, Caeser's Palace, Mirage and the Luxor. Edit: And the Paris. Really like that place.
- The MGM is cool to walk around since it's so.loving.big, but there's really no redeeming value beyond that.
- NY NY has a section that feels like walking around the streets of NYC.
- The Tropicana is old Vegas, but they just dumped a shitton of money into it very recently and gave it a nice facelift.
- Downtown is downtown and the best place to people watch.
- If you want to go to a place where girls who would normally rank as a 9 look like they're a 6, check out the Palms.
- If you want to watch as truckers awkwardly try to pick up hookers, then go to the Wild Wild West.
- You can basically skip Imperial Palace, O'Shea's, Flamingo and Casino Royale altogether.
- Circus Circus is nice if you enjoy watching unsupervised children run around.
- Ellis Island is a poo poo hole, but they have the best steak special in town (it's not on the menu, but trust me... $8 for a great steak, salad, potato, veggies and a glass of their micro brew beer or root beer.)

I'm in a foul mood today since Pep Boys hosed up my brakes, so forgive me if I seem jaded.

Sunday Thursday is my normal stay. Last month did a Saturday-Wednesday which had me arriving in Vegas at 8:00 am. That made for a cheaper but longer stay and really screwed me on my sleep. I don't think anyone slept until Monday afternoon.

If you are going to an event that is on the weekend this obviously limits your options.

What kind of rooms are these? I just checked Vdara and it's $768 and while that place doesn't immediately have gambling downstairs, it's a nice newish place surrounded by nice casinos, with rooms that are far better than the basic rooms at MGM Grand (they're renovating, but charge you extra for a new room.)

Unless you do Vegas the gooniest way of perpetual endless drunkenness and never achieving true REM sleep, or unless you want to smoke in the room, I would shell out the extra $100 for that over a trashpile in a lousy stretch of the boulevard like the Riv.

It's a several hour drive. Northern Arizona's beautiful though, if you have the time it's a good few days. Drive out to Holbrook, see Meteor Crater, the Petrified Forest and the Painted Desert over the course of a day. Stop at the Grand Canyon on the way back.

The good nature that's close to Vegas is Red Rock Canyon, the Grand Canyon, and Zion. Arches and Bryce Canyon aren't too much further. Everything in southern Utah is spectacular.

True, but ever since they bought the Village Pub chain, you can get the same steak special and micro brews (not sure about the ribs) without dealing with the meth addicts at the actual Ellis Island.

Nice. I only did Frankie's once, and that was to eat Fukuburger. But I definitely liked the vibe in there.

The Double Down is a loving diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive and I love it. Great place to see some good lesser-known touring bands. Don't bother with local Vegas bands. They're all terrible.

There are two cool places right next to the Griffin that are pretty rad: The Beauty Bar and Don't Tell Mama. Beauty Bar has decent DJs in there some nights, so check event calendars online to see what's going on. Don't Tell Mama is a piano bar where they encourage people to be rowdy and sing along. Maybe not a great place for a bunch of drunk guys who want to talk about football, but definitely fun if you want to embarrass your buddy and make him sing Rocket Man over and over again.

For microbrews, Main Street Station (downtown) has a really good selection and they've won a ton of awards for their brews. We've talked about Ellis Island/Village Pub, so that's another option. Or if you're in the mood to drive, Tenaya Creek usually has a really good selection of their own brews, and the link will show you places around town where you can get their beer on tap.

I should also point out that I don't drink. I just spend a lot of time with drunks. Seriously... lots of time.

LordOfThePants
Sep 25, 2002

Todd English's P.U.B in the Crystals has a bunch of beers on tap - nothing local, but a pretty big variety.

It's amazing what they charge for Bud Light, I'm thinking it was $9 or so. I was drinking an Imperial IPA that was cheaper. I should have asked how much they sold normally.

We didnt eat there, but the food looked great. Service was really good at the bar.

Main Street Station is my favorite brewery in Vegas though. The beer is cheaper in the casino bar, although I think they may not have as many available.

Hit up Sin City either in Miracle Mile or The Flamingo. $7 pitchers of decent beer. Pitchers are considerably cheaper than the draft beers. The only real downside is they're too big for the drink holders on the blackjack tables.

Location is the first key if you won't be there often. Of course there are advantages to some. If you want prime center strip for cheap, stay at Imperial Palace. Clean rooms and the small casino is fun. Planet Hollywood is a place where you would want to stay on property because of the amenities, and the dancers on poles near the table games.

Ya know, I read/post on a few different message boards, and it seems like every time Vegas comes up, people are like "Dudebro, you gotta spend the money and get a suite at Bellagio or Wynn. Forserious it's totally worth the extra cash." And I always try to be the voice of reason and remind people that if they're spending more than four hours a day in their room, they suck at Vegas. But I end up getting shouted down and just let people waste their money.

Imperial Palace is a great location, TI, Flamingo, Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Bally's are all decently cheap options in a good, central location. Don't even bother looking at Circus Circus, Stratosphere or Palace Station. The south end of the Strip is, in my opinion, vastly underrated. Rooms at the Tropicana can be had for cheap, they just dumped a bunch of money into the place for renovations, and it's on the corner with Excalibur, NY NY, and MGM, as well as walking distance to Mandalay Bay and Luxor.

Walking around seeing the sights is exactly what you should do your first time. There is plenty to do for a 19 year old. Food, there is so much food. If you are into art, the art gallery at the Bellagio and their conservatory (best place inside there for photos). There is Gameworks which is on the strip but under the ground which is kinda cool. Playing air hockey drunk under Las Vegas was fun for me and my girlfriend.

Stratosphere tower has a great view that should be seen and many batshit insane rides atop it. There are other roller coaster rides along the strip that are fun. You can get great views from that.

Shopping for whatever the hell you want because it is there.

Don't buy drugs on the strip from the black guys in coats. They wear those coats in all weather and handout free passes to night clubs and strip clubs and try to sell you fun drugs. They can be fun to talk to because they love talking about drugs.

You can also shoot guns if that interests you. Full auto is fun, even if you shoot at home all the time like myself. Enjoy the trip the place owns and go back on your 21st birthday.

Planned a trip with my girlfriend to go next weekend, only to realize that our must-see shows have already ended their run (Lion King, Jersey Boys). Are there any really good shows to see during January 27-29 so that our weekend isn't a total loss? Or maybe some cool activities to do instead? Maybe even some underrated shows?

We basically want to explore Vegas entertainment since we're in our mid 20's and pretty much over the club scene (we've been there several times before and never got to see any shows). Shows that we're looking at to compensate are:
Blue Man Group
Penn & Teller
Cirque Du Soleil, but not sure which one would be the best for that weekend.
Human Nature (there's a deal on Goldstar for decently priced tickets).

The above isn't a hard list, so we're open to suggestions!
