---Edit: I don't have any great aspirations to make this a Vegas megathread, but I figure I'll but some links in to some great threads/posts Sheep-Goats and others have made at least

I want to make a bunch of money in Vegas. How do I do it? I have no idea, but I'm pretty sure you can't. You probably want to spend the next year reading the PITR forum

I don't mind losing money, but I'd like to have fun gambling. What's good and where can I learn? This is easier. Sheep-Goats has an excellent thread on the topic of non-poker casino games. The top suggestions are generally Craps, Pai Gow Poker, Blackjack and Roulette. Sheep has rules links in his thread for all those games, and you can get some basic practice for free on any of those games at bodog.com. Basic selling points of each:

  • Craps- despite how complicated the table looks, it's a very easy game to play and the odds are only slightly in the house's favor. It can be very social, but avoid slowing down the game if you're the shooter.
  • Pai Gow Poker- I know little about this game. Sheep say's it's relaxing and very social and he seems to know what he's talking about!
  • Blackjack- If you can memorize a 10x30 chart of 'actions', you can get the house edge down to a pretty low percent. Some people have had a lot of fun a blackjack tables, while others have had tablemates bitch at them because they 'totally broke the table strategy'. Also it can be a fast moving game.
  • Roulette- Has a pretty strong house edge, and in the one time I've played before the other players seemed to be more focused on laying out their chips in the tetragrammaton than talking. But the spins come fairly slowly, and if you make coin-flip type bets (red/black, even/odd) you can probably stick at a table for a while without losing your shirt.

What about non-gambling? Where do I stay/eat/drink? Good threads to comb through are the Archived PITR General Vegas thread and JaySB's Working in Vegas thread. Basic things to know-

  • Either stay on the strip or in Downtown. Downtown is cheaper and has some good casinos, while the strip is more expensive but you'll find all the shows/clubs/strippers there.
  • If you're gambling, ask for comps. It's a good way to get some coffee/lunch even if you're not a high roller.
  • Also, get a members/players card from your casino. It'll give the casino an excuse to send you e-mails with good room discounts once you leave.
  • There's a lot of advice to avoid cabbies. Don't let them take the freeway to/from the airport, and if you're going out to a strip club or the like, see if the club has a shuttle/limo/car that can pick you up.
  • Apparently, greet everyone working at your hotel/casino/club/restaurant with a palmed $20. Ask at check-in if there's a room upgrade available, and you might get it for free.
  • Unless you have a particular show you want to see, it seems best to wait for people to offer you discount 'night-of' show tickets. I mean, how many different Cirque shows can there be?

What's the best/cheapest/nicest place to stay? Hotel/casinos/resorts fall into and out of favor, and it also depends on how much you really want to spend AND why you're going.

  • Excalibur tends to have some good deals, but it's very family oriented.
  • Stratosphere seems to also have cheap rooms, but it's located at the very north edge of the strip
  • MGM and The Wynn tend to be pretty well recommended for adults
  • AZCoug recommends Bill's Gambling Hall as the ideal place to stay on the strip for cheap. If you have a players cad with them, you can get offers to stay for free or almost free. It's more central to the strip than the Stratosphere and (I believe) less family than Excalibur.
  • I'll add more as suggestions are posted!

:goonsay: Tell me about the women! If you believe JaySB's thread, women who go to Vegas are just waiting to hop on any dick they can find! The big key is to not be yourself! Vegas is the place and time to lie about who and what you are. IT geek? How about a social networking expert who worked on the Obama campaign. Unemployed? Try out being an artist. Lie and spend what little money you have, and the world is your oyster. Lincoln said that.

Strip Clubs? Very popular! You probably shouldn't feel embarrassed going to one, although as my girlfriend puts it- don't be the guy who buys into the fantasy. $20 seems to be the general cost of a lapdance. Sapphire's and Spearmint Rhino are the biggest ones near the strip. $350 gets you bottle service and a bunch of attention, while $500-$600 will usually get you a half-hour or hour in a VIP room where you may be able to have sex?!

Ahh prostitution! It's legal there right? NO. Prostitution is legal in neighboring counties, but illegal in Las Vegas. That, of course, doesn't mean there aren't prostitutes easily found. But remember- getting involved in illegal activities are a great way to get ripped off or in trouble with the cops.

What about those live girls delivered to your room?! Just don't.

How do I spot a prostitute? They're the ones not drinking alcohol at the bar/club.

---------End of Megathread Type info----------

I'm kind of surprised there's not a thread for general Vegas advice, but I guess a place designed to be easy to travel to maybe doesn't need one?

I'm planning a ~4 day vacation in about a month, and I've decided to go to Vegas for the first time. I'm going back to an MBA program a week later where vacations are going to be tougher to schedule, so I'm looking to just tune out and drink, make some friends and lose a little money gambling. Also, since this is a bit of a celebration visit I'm spending a bit on myself. It looks like I'll pay around $900 for the flight and trip, and maybe about that much in drinking/gambling/clubbing? I'm currently planning on going alone.

I'm open to any suggestion, but in particular I was wondering if people had gambling advice? I've only been to a casino once before, and I'm fine with losing money (I'm not looking for any insider tips or anything)- but I'd like suggestions on how to make sure my gambling experience looks more like one of those exciting Vegas movies with people shooting craps and cheering, and not sitting in front of a slot machine zoned out.

For gambling advice you can look at my gambling thread in PiTR. I'm phone posting now so I can't get you a link, but it's on the first page of Poker in the Rear, which is a subforum of Sports Argument Stadium.

Didn't see it when I peaked through there- but I think I found it:

Thanks.

Does anyone have prefered suggestions for hotels/resorts?

Just the thread that I needed!

I am best-man in my best friends wedding and trying to plan a Vegas bachelor party for July 22-24. Looking to get at least 8 people out there.

I was just planning on getting some cheap rooms (~$175/night) since we would only use them for sleeping. All other money would go to a VIP Service and gambling/strip clubs.

Has anyone had any luck with packages from a place like this? I'm looking at the "Last Supper" package, wich would be $159/person with a minimum of 6 people.

Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread, I just need all the help I can get.

Hijack away. That's the same weekend I'm going so if anyone has any suggestions on cool things going down that weekend I'd love to hear.

This entire thread is well worth a read for Vegas advice/suggestions.

I was reading through that yesterday, finding it through one of Sheep-Goat's threads. I was thinking of putting a post there asking some of the guys with travel advice to come over here, but I don't really know Ask/Tell politics I guess...

One thing I noticed this morning- I usually book vacations through Orbitz and I feel like everything I was seeing on the strip aside from one/two casinos (Excalibur, Stratosphere) were basically $850 to $1050 for 3 nights. I was looking at priceline this morning on a lark and everything seemed a lot cheaper- $650-$850 for a places at the Mirage, MGM etc. Does anyone know if priceline is just better connected in Vegas or anything?

Holy poo poo, 200-350/night for MGM? My biggest tip is getting a players card when you are there, and use it, even at nickel slots. Even at low limits, you'll get offers for rooms for 40 or 50 dollars (probably free rooms at luxor). MGM is terrible about comping anything while you are there, but they love giving offers ahead of time to get you back.

Ok nevermind, I'm more awake now and went back to check the numbers. The prices looked better ($690 for the MGM on Priceline versus $830 through Orbitz, $870 for The Venetian versus $1,070), but I figured out that priceline doesn't let you select roughly when your flights are. On Orbitz I'm opting to fly in/out at noon/afternoon times. Priceline is defaulting me to a 'Thursday' flight that doesn't get me in until 1:30am Friday, and has me leaving Sunday at 12:30 am. Once I select more reasonable flight times, it evens out.

So what's the best seat to sit at where other players (rightly or wrongly) won't bitch at you about hitting when you aren't supposed to or whatever?

I've started playing some practice games on Bodog just to get the rules and terms down as much as possible, but I know I'm not going to be a pro at blackjack by the time I visit

First base is the least prone to bitching, that's the seat furthest to the right -- the main thing is to just stay out of third. Keep in mind, though, that blackjack players can be real pricks (it's the whole knowing just enough to get into trouble thing) and sometimes it's just something you have to put up with. If your friends are with you you can take over the table pretty quickly just by filling seats as people leave which usually happens at the shuffle.

The game with the best overall social / laid back atmosphere is probably pai gow poker, imo.

Do I get to shout "PAIGOW!" every hand, or is that frowned upon?

Actually- are there any good rules for spotting a fun table? Obviously this is probably asking you to delve into stereotyping, but I know I've read things like "Asians are very serious about baccarat"...do I look for the guy in a 10-gallon hat and bolo tie?

There are little things people like to say at paigow and you'll pick them up as you go. You can yell "lahp lahp!" every hand if you want to, which is hexing the dealer by yelling "nothing nothing!"

Spotting a fun table isn't hard. If people look happy there you'll feel happy sitting down there, too.

I thought everyone looked happy in Vegas?!

Sheeps, I hope it's ok, but I updated the OP with a bunch the advice you've given in this thread and others. Let me know if anything looks off.

Wow I started this thread! I'm glad people who know what they're talking about actually post in it and not me.

For people who are more Vegas-savvy, I am planning a short trip with my girlfriend for late October/early November. She mentioned off-hand that she wants to try horseback riding/doing a day tour via horseback. Can anyone recommend a place/ranch that might be a short drive outside of Vegas we could do a day at? One with, you know, horses and people who know how to ride them?
