Alone in Vegas during the day is like a vacation within a vacation.

Being alone in Vegas during the day made me an easy target, apparently. I got approached twice by men trying to pick me up.

My mate and I from Australia will be over in Las Vegas from the 6th to the 9th of July. We are both 24 and will be backpacking. We're trying to decide whether to book rooms at the Imperial Palace due to it being dirt cheap or whether we should book into a hostel off the strip.

We're not tight arses and will be drinking and gambling, but we aren't interested in going to exclusive clubs, table service etc. due to our limited budget. With that being said, would we be better off staying at a hostel and meeting other backpackers or go to the Imperial Palace and try our luck with meeting people in the casinos and not-so-exclusive bars?

I don't have experience with hostels in Vegas and I'm not sure what they're charging, but for that extra little bit of money per night (and probably not all that much), you could get a nicer room with a bathroom and have access in the same building to pretty much everything you'd need. I'd probably opt for the hostel. You shouldn't have trouble meeting people regardless of where you are in Vegas.

Are there any games that I can enjoy at some $50 / hour? Slots can go as low as 1c/ spin but they are mindless, it's not even a game. No limit poker is $100 buy in at least, live roulette is $10 per spin... The closest thing I found is electronic roulette at $3 per spin but if you play every spin even that won't last an hour.

Maybe video poker? It's not completely mindless like slots, at least.

Can you elaborate on this? Does it require driving on unpaved roads or something?

Why not just grab a taxi to the hotel you're staying at and leave your bags at the concierge, then go do whatever you want until your group arrives? I've left bags at the concierge of hotels I'm not even staying at, so I don't think they'd care that the hotel isn't in your name. Waiting 6-7 hours in an airport after you've already arrived doesn't seem logical to me, especially in Vegas.

Late June / early July in Vegas: what's it like that time of year in general?

I was there in the week leading up to July 4th. It didn't really seem any busier than normal, but the prices went up pretty much across the board a few days before the 4th itself. Or are you asking about the climate? Uh, it was very hot. And dry. I saw it hit 114 degrees when I was in the Valley of Fire.
