As much of a pain in the rear end they are to carry around, Players Cards are a must. I have one for every casino and use it every time I play. Also, don't stand in line for them, if you don't have one, just give the dealer your ID when you sit down to play a table game and the pit boss will make you one.

I got a players card from Bill's Gambling Hall and am now frequently getting "post cards" in the mail for free/discounted rooms. In fact, the last 2 times I've gone to Vegas I've stayed at Bills for free and I'm not exactly a high roller. Speaking of Bill's, if you want a nice place to stay for relatively cheap, that's your place. I've stayed next door at the Flamingo and Bill's blows it out of the water. The rooms are nice and very clean and you can't beat the location and the casino. The staff there is also great, you have more of a personal touch in a smaller hotel like that. It's also nice because their casino has a lot of low limits and it next to O'Sheas and some others that have low limits.

If you're at the other end of the strip, Hooters is a good casino too. Kinda like Bills, where it isn't huge and they have low limits. Another bonus is because it's not huge, the waitresses are always close by with fast service!

Here a blackjack tip: I realize the $5 tables are "beginners" tables, but for God's sakes, if you don't know how to play the game, don't sit at 3rd base (last chair on the left) and gently caress up the whole table with your stupidity! On the same note, if you have an idea of what you're doing and want to stay away from those situations, go to a $10 table, those rookie mistakes tend to happen less often there.

Games: Seems some people here have a little bitterness towards Craps. But if you learn to play it, it is actually a really fun game. One that you can either win a lot of money on, very quickly, or lose very quickly. Even at a $5 table, your absolute minimum buy in should be $60, anyless than that you can't really do much with unless you plan on sitting there and covering the passline and playing the field every now and again.

If you want a good, low risk, drinking game, Pai Gow is your game. I've sat down with $40 before and literally played for 4 hours and I think I ended up netting $40, all while sucking down the Captain and Coke and making the waitress run her rear end off! It won't take long to catch on, but you could honestly flip over every hand you have and let the dealer set your cards to the "house way" and never even try to understand the game. I'm not sure what the actually percentages are, but it seems like you push 70% of the time in that game, which is why it's a great free drinking game.

Taxi/Monorail: Depends on what your plans are. If you plan on being up and down the strip all day and don't want to walk, buy an all day monorail pass, they will be much cheaper than taxis. But be prepared to do some walking, the stations are at the back of all the hotels/casinos, so you will be walking a block or two just to get to the strip. Fremont is a must a night, if you've never been. There's nothing wrong with a Taxi (plan on $15 one-way), but unless you like sitting in a loving musty sweat box, making 40 stops through the ghetto and just happen to have an overwhelming urge to piss away a couple hours of your Vegas vacation, STAY AWAY FROM THE CITY BUS. If you're that worried about cost, find someone to split a cab with.

I'll leave this long post at that. I loving love Vegas and could sperg about it all day, so feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I've lost track of the number of times I've been there, so I can probably answer most your questions (unless it's about clubbing. If I wanted to pay $12 for a beer I'll stick money in a slot machine and wait 30 min for my waitress...)

Ok nevermind, I'm more awake now and went back to check the numbers. The prices looked better ($690 for the MGM on Priceline versus $830 through Orbitz, $870 for The Venetian versus $1,070), but I figured out that priceline doesn't let you select roughly when your flights are. On Orbitz I'm opting to fly in/out at noon/afternoon times. Priceline is defaulting me to a 'Thursday' flight that doesn't get me in until 1:30am Friday, and has me leaving Sunday at 12:30 am. Once I select more reasonable flight times, it evens out.

If you're flying in from out of town, tell your cab driver specifically to NOT take the freeway. They may tell you it's quicker (and maybe sometimes it is), but usally it isn't. It's out of the way and ends up being longer (mileage wise) and more expensive in the end.

(Obviously it depends on where you're staying, but for most hotels, the surface streets will suffice.)

Craps is a really social game

Not sure I agree with that. Craps is very fast paced and most of the time people are busy placing bets or picking up bets in between rolls, as opposed to chatting it up. Just depends on the table I guess. And you'll get a feel for what the table is like, after being there for a few minutes.

Craps players can also be very superstitious and tend to get easily annoyed if you happen to be holding up the game in any way (this mostly applys if you are a roller and you're too busy BS'ing with your buddy instead of picking up the dice. Then again, you keep rolling winners and you can gossip with your bro-dude all you want).

If you want a social, chit chat game, go play Roulette. There's a lot of time between spins where you can meet people and have a good time.

Mathematically, the rest of the table's odds are the same whether the guy at 3rd base adheres to basic strategy or makes terrible plays. It's just easiest to blame him as it's most apparent. His bad moves also help the table.

Negative. When the dealer has a 6 and everyone at the table stays besides the idiot at 3rd base (or where ever he may be) who ends up taking the dealer's bust card and they make a hand, my odds just went from 100% to 0%. Granted, the seat its self doesn't matter that much, because he could have done that at the center of the table while everyone else stayed and the end result would be the same. But at the end of the day, 3rd base has the final say and can easily gently caress up a hand.

I've lost way more money from his bad moves than I've made. And I don't stay long enough to actually witness if his bad moves "help" the table.

If a guy is playing basic strategy and we lose, I'm not going to blame him just because he's in that seat. His dumb rear end play makes it apparent, not the seat, I realize that. So yes, if you don't know what the gently caress you're doing and you cost the whole table a win, I will blame you...no matter where you sit.

It's not based on your personal experience. Read this. I don't like seeing anyone make an incorrect play that leads to me losing, but I understand it just as easily could've been a win.

Touche. Mathematically, it stands. But the only thing that throws me for a loop is the constant use of "in the long run". Well what exactly is the "long run", because when that happens to me I usually don't stick around long enough for the "long run" to play out. I'm too worried about the mathematics not working in my favor during the short run.

Going to Vegas for the first time first week of August for BlackHat/Defcon. My buds apparently want to stay at MGM Grand while the conference is at Caesar's. Their idea is to take the monorail but it looks like it stops hella far from Caesar's. I'm going to an event at Paris before BlackHat and probably staying there as well for a couple days.

MGM to Caesar's is doable if you don't mind a little bit of a walk. But MGM to Caesar's in August = CAB.

Paris to Caesar's would be okay to walk, but at that time of the year it's about as far as I'd want to go.

And please do not buy one of those 3 foot tall sugar infested margaritas. They get disgusting after a few sips.

Actually the "Orange Octane" from Dicks inside Excalibur is actually pretty tasty and if you have them add the additional shot (costs you your other arm) it will give you quite the buzz. However, still not sure if it's tasty enough to warrant the 3' tall glass. Just go with the football instead, that way you and your buddies can make the Heisman pose all around the strip for the rest of the night (more great Facebook opps).

This is mainly the large novelty drink you want to avoid, they are sold at the RockHouse in front of Imperial Palace:
Might look good on her

But not so much here

Haha, I've had one of those football ones on Fremont, but it was full of beer. Sounded like a good idea until 45 minutes later when you had half a football full of warm beer.

Never seen the guitar ones, but I think that would go without saying. Is that you??

After all that nonsense, I land in Las Vegas at 11am. I take a shuttle bus, the driver drops me off at a 7-11 near the corner of Flamingo Road and Koval. I buy a phone and start walking towards Caesar's Palace. Whoever said that "every thing looks close but is very far away" wasn't kidding. I finally get to Caesar's, get inside and start looking for a pay phone to activate my new cellphone. A lot easier said than done! Where are the drat payphones! It takes me about an hour to locate the pay phone and then jump through T-Mobile's hoops to get my phone activated.

Now all I have to do is wait for my cousin to show up. He's on a later flight, he's supposed to arrive around 8pm. Unfortunately I still have my carry on luggage, a backpack and a very heavy winter jacket on me so I'm not very mobile. I consider asking the check in clerk to hold on to my stuff but my cousin had booked the room under a single name. Afraid that if they ask me questions my cousin may get in trouble, I hold on to my bags and jacket.

We catch a bus and make our way downtown.

Pros:
-I saw Pete Rose and Dick Butkus signing autographs at memorabilia stores so hey, celebrities!

Pay phone? It's hard enough to find a pay phone out in general public, let along on the strip in Las Vegas.

They really don't care how many names the room is under. Besides, they aren't the ones to take your bags anyways. Go to the Bell and give them all your poo poo, they don't care/know if you're staying there or not. We had to do that when we got in early AM too, since they wouldn't allow us to check in until the afternoon. Leave your stuff that's holding you down and go do your thing.

Not sure how your bus experience was but you might find that it's a lot faster to just grab a cab. It's about $15 each way, but better than being stuck on a crowded bus for 30-45 min (that was my experience).

Pete Rose has been selling out there for a long time now. Seems like Butkus recently tagged along. Sad...

Where is this exactly?

For my anniversary trip in October I'll have enough for a comped room at Aria, two premium Cirque tickets and some other 'big' ticket item like bottle service at one of the Aria bars (we aren't big club goes so we'll probably not use that one).

Has anyone actually cashed in their loyalty points and used any of the comps? How does it work, for a free room for instance? Do they send you a promo code to use when booking the room?

Can you buy two comped rooms and use them consecutively at the same resort?
