For gambling advice you can look at my gambling thread in PiTR. I'm phone posting now so I can't get you a link, but it's on the first page of Poker in the Rear, which is a subforum of Sports Argument Stadium.

Touche. Mathematically, it stands. But the only thing that throws me for a loop is the constant use of "in the long run". Well what exactly is the "long run", because when that happens to me I usually don't stick around long enough for the "long run" to play out. I'm too worried about the mathematics not working in my favor during the short run.

If you gamble there is only the long run. You might only see a section of it, but there is no point where the rules change because of the timeframe involved. There is no way to select which portion or portions of the long run you will experience, but as far as the game is concerned you're one of a million people concurrently putting his money at stake in a particular way and the net result for that is going to be functionally identical every single time.

You should also keep in mind that we, as a species, fear loss about twice as much as we desire gain.* When you say you've lost more on others misplaying third base than you've gained would you say it was more than twice as much?

*According to my freshman psychology text in college -- the experiment involved surveying people for at what point, statistically, they'd flip a coin to win a dollar. The population doesn't bite until you offer them 2:1.

So what's the best seat to sit at where other players (rightly or wrongly) won't bitch at you about hitting when you aren't supposed to or whatever?

I've started playing some practice games on Bodog just to get the rules and terms down as much as possible, but I know I'm not going to be a pro at blackjack by the time I visit

First base is the least prone to bitching, that's the seat furthest to the right -- the main thing is to just stay out of third. Keep in mind, though, that blackjack players can be real pricks (it's the whole knowing just enough to get into trouble thing) and sometimes it's just something you have to put up with. If your friends are with you you can take over the table pretty quickly just by filling seats as people leave which usually happens at the shuffle.

The game with the best overall social / laid back atmosphere is probably pai gow poker, imo.

Actually- are there any good rules for spotting a fun table? Obviously this is probably asking you to delve into stereotyping, but I know I've read things like "Asians are very serious about baccarat"...do I look for the guy in a 10-gallon hat and bolo tie?

There are little things people like to say at paigow and you'll pick them up as you go. You can yell "lahp lahp!" every hand if you want to, which is hexing the dealer by yelling "nothing nothing!"

Spotting a fun table isn't hard. If people look happy there you'll feel happy sitting down there, too.

By the way the best Thai restaurant in North America (and therefore outside of Thailand) is in Vegas. Lotus of Siam is really one of Vegas's culinary powerhouses. I wrote a long rear end review of it in the archived General Vegas thread mentioned in the OP if anyone wants to fish it out and repost it in here for me. Unlike the rest of Vegas's dining stars Lotus is also very reasonably priced, though it is located in a strip mall instead of a casino.

Cockmaster posted:

I've been looking into heading to Vegas this spring, and I've been studying poker strategy some. Are there any particularly good places and/or times to milk compulsive gamblers at the poker table?

Tables are weakest on the weekend on the strip. Even at the 1/2 tables however you'll see a lot of locals who just play poker all the time when they're done with work and while they generally play in a way that you can exploit (and are therefore technically not good) they're not clueless. Certain rooms have more sharks than others, but those rooms also usually have lower rake and are better rooms as far as the layout and chairs and comps and whatnot goes, so it's probably mostly a wash.
The smaller rooms have a higher proprtion of bad passive tourist players, the larger rooms have a higher proportion of maniac Asians and Idiots from Northern Europe.

Once in a while you get a guy who lost some money at the tables and takes his last 150 or whatever and gives it a go on poker. If you're lucky you'll be in a playable spot at the same time they are. If you're really lucky or know how to isolate and play post someone else who knows what they're doing maybe won't join the party. Overall though you have to be able to keep up vs. people who aren't clueless while you wait for those spots. If a place has good games going with lots of bad players you see a few locals send a few texts and lo and behold in walks a few more of them.

Some of the 2/5 tables have a surprisingly good stable of regular players sitting at them but at least at that level the rake isn't such a huge burden (still a pain though).
If they have their headphones in, a patient look on their face and a lot of money in front of them you're going to have to earn your pots if they're involved whether you crush the flop or not.

Oh and hey JaySB, I'm in town. I'm just playing poker for now but PM me if you get tired of being an internet thrillionaire.

Some people like the Palazzo's book, which was originally a nightclub that I once worked for, a fair bit. Instead of it feeling like an afterthought as a book it feels like someone went totally overboard. You would walk to the Venetian a short bit for poker which is a big well run room with low rake (4 max no drop) and a few extra sharks -- the two casinos are connected through a short underground tunnel with a big year of the goat display in it. Both of these places are a little more utilitarian than the Wynn (but not some bog grade operation like the Flamingo or whatever) and I have no idea about the price points but consider it as an option -- maybe it's fair to say they're the low end of upscale, I don't know.

Venetian hosts a lot of deep stack tourneys.

They only call an ambulance to dodge liability. At the hospital they just put the drunks in drunk corner and ignore them until they leave. Medical intervention for a drunk involves putting them in recovery position, throwing a blanket on them and letting them sleep it off.

You can call an ambulance for your drunk friend if they aren't breathing or are the wrong color (red doesn't count).

E: recovery position looks like this

That's also what you do if someone has a seizure. Except then you should probably call an ambulance because people sometimes re-seize.

Heh, Uber would definitely clean up cabs in Vegas. It seems that customer service or basic vehicle cleanliness isn't required to be a cabbie but if they're working for uber its going to more hustle on your side job.

On another note, I've heard Vegas is heavily unionized - cabs, hospitality, dealers, bartenders. How accurate is this?

Used to be more unionized than it is today but since it was built by the mob on loans from union pension funds you shouldn't be too surprised. A top heavy cash economy like Vegas honestly needs a lot of unionization to keep its workforce from perpetually eating poo poo though, even more than the rest of the US, so it's a good thing in the end, as unions almost always are. Service industry people always appreciate unions as well because union people tip well, are easy to please, aren't snots, and generally are trying to have a simple good time so there's a reinforcement loop in place even for non unionized workers.

I've found the service and cleanliness of the cabs to be good in Vegas -- the issue is that they're hideously overpriced and the occasional bad egg cabby can be scammy (as cabbies are tend to do everywhere in the world). Uber would clean up just because there's a lot of room to run a cheaper cab service here. In reality though most cabbies aren't living large and the fact that tourists taking very short trips up and down the strip account for a huge proportion of most fares means that if Uber does come in and things do get cheaper you'll just see a lot less cabs running around and pretty quickly the cost of Uber fares will start spiking until things balance back out to slightly lower than they are now.

So I'm heading to Vegas on a business trip for around 4-5 nights this fall, being put up in the Cosmopolitan by work. I'll probably only have one or two evenings "free" outside of planned work activites, and aside from hitting up the Chipotle across the street (I'm an expat American, this will be my first time back in the States in over two years, don't judge), I guess I'll spend my time gaming. Now I didn't pick the Cosmopolitan, and if I were a tourist it'd be out of my price range anyway, so am I going to be screwed with high stakes at their casino? Would I be better off walking across to Planet Hollywood or the Bellagio?

My gaming would only be casual and probably restricted to craps & blackjack.

Right next to a Chipotle (maybe not there one you mentioned, this one is just North of Harras) is the Casino Royale place already mentioned. If the posted table limits are higher than you like when you go through Cosmo (they might not be) you can try there. You can also take the Deuce (a public bus) from the strip to downtown and have a lot of selection for lower limit games. Maybe a cab back if it's late and you don't want to wait for the bus again.

Hey Vegas goons there's a guy who put up a thread in GBS a few days ago because he recently became homeless in Vegas. Currently he's at the hospital because he ate some two day old boiled sausages he had been keeping in his car out of severe goon hunger. I remember his posts for a long time now and seems like a decent sane guy but I've never met him personally so I can't vouch for him or whatever, but maybe someone here can help him out since I'm not in Vegas any more. He doesn't seem to have a benefit card yet (that will get fixed soon I'm sure) so interim donations of food you don't have to cook (he can't boil any more, no cooking, so like trail mix and canned food with a can opener) would probably be welcome. Also if anyone is in a position to offer him work he'd probably take it, although he says in the thread that he can't do physical labor like he used to be able to. His skills:

quote:

I just built an entire e-commerce site with multiple vendors, Sphinx-backed search, an interface to a custom payment processing gateway, private messaging, etc, from scratch using PHP and Laravel 5. Apparently that's not even worth a call back after submitting a resume. I can configure a LAMP setup in my sleep. I once built a Usenet binary indexer that ran on a poo poo server and had instant full-text searching on a 750,000,000-row database. I noticed a lot of call for Angular.js, so the day after I put up a little resume site, I went back and redid it in Angular, which I had never read a single thing about until that day. It's super-simple Angular, with just a few routes and a menu, but it works. If you look at my posts in the Cavern of COBOL screenshots thread, you'll see other websites I built just for the hell of it, and an implementation of EvoLisa I wrote in C#.

He lost his primary job and then had health problems and a span of not being able to find new paying work. I'm posting this for him here because he seems like the kind of guy that doesn't ask for help himself when he needs it.
