Poker - Yes, it's fun. Yes, most places have lessons. Yes, it can be a great way to make some easy cash when you're playing against a drunk Texan with more money than brains. THAT SAID - 95% of Vegas poker players are the biggest cunts you will ever have the displeasure of sharing oxygen with. They'll bitch if you take too long to make a move. They'll bitch if you play the "wrong" cards. They'll bitch if the dealer keeps having to tell you when to put blinds out. They're worse than a PMS'ing divorced secretary that used to be smoking hot 40 years ago and now just looks like life has given up on her. Seriously, I absolutely loving hate them all.

I don't drink at all, but the pub at the Monte Carlo and the Triple 7 Restaurant at the Main Street Station downtown have fantastic microbrews. If you feel like spending a few bucks on a cab, the Ellis Island does microbrew beer and root beer, plus they have the best off-the-menu steak special anywhere.

The area around the Strat is poo poo - there's no denying that - but they run some of the best daily poker tournaments in town. Plus with the rides on top of the tower, the under-21 crowd should be able to kill a decent amount of time there. Alas, there's nothing worthwhile around it, so expect to drive if you want to go anywhere.

What are good clubs for picking up girls, or what other places are good for meeting people who want to party?

If you're on the strip, you've got four really good, mostly upscale malls you can window shop at - Crystals (City Center), Fashion Show Mall, Forum Shops (Caeser's Palace), and whatever the mall is called at Planet Hollywood. In all honesty, I spend almost zero time on the strip - I moved here five years ago and I think I've actually been to places on the strip about a dozen times. But those malls should cover what you're looking for.

Honestly I want to limit my spending to 1k. So I am assuming not much gambling? Shows are actually pretty expensive right? Also will it be depressing empty? I know its the off season but I kinda like playing craps with a bunch of rowdy people.

We do plan on going downtown this time around to check it out, I havent been there. Would it be advised to just hop in the cab from our hotel? (The Mirage) to downtown? I already got a tip on a nice bar called The Griffin.

The best way to limit your gambling is to only bring cash and your ID to the casino, and set a daily limit to how much you can lose. Leave the credit/debit cards back in the room. Shows will run $60 to $150 a ticket, depending on the show. It's definitely not the tourist season, but it's never empty.

Downtown rules. The Griffin is slightly outside of the main downtown area (Fremont Street Experience). But if you're going over to that area, you may as well go across the street from the Griffin to Insert Coin(s).

Thanks for the info, I know it was sorta touched on in this thread. But is there anything that is a must see while on the strip? We plan on walking around, but dont know what casinos are a "can't miss".

Depends on what you mean by "can't miss".
- If you just want "nice", Bellagio, Mandalay Bay, Aria, Cosmopolitan and the Wynn are your best bets.
- If you want cool decor, then it's Venetian, Caeser's Palace, Mirage and the Luxor. Edit: And the Paris. Really like that place.
- The MGM is cool to walk around since it's so.loving.big, but there's really no redeeming value beyond that.
- NY NY has a section that feels like walking around the streets of NYC.
- The Tropicana is old Vegas, but they just dumped a shitton of money into it very recently and gave it a nice facelift.
- Downtown is downtown and the best place to people watch.
- If you want to go to a place where girls who would normally rank as a 9 look like they're a 6, check out the Palms.
- If you want to watch as truckers awkwardly try to pick up hookers, then go to the Wild Wild West.
- You can basically skip Imperial Palace, O'Shea's, Flamingo and Casino Royale altogether.
- Circus Circus is nice if you enjoy watching unsupervised children run around.
- Ellis Island is a poo poo hole, but they have the best steak special in town (it's not on the menu, but trust me... $8 for a great steak, salad, potato, veggies and a glass of their micro brew beer or root beer.)

I'm in a foul mood today since Pep Boys hosed up my brakes, so forgive me if I seem jaded.

We've been going to Frankie's Tiki room for our non-casino bar drinking in the downtown area. Anywhere else you would recommend?

Nice. I only did Frankie's once, and that was to eat Fukuburger. But I definitely liked the vibe in there.

The Double Down is a loving diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiive and I love it. Great place to see some good lesser-known touring bands. Don't bother with local Vegas bands. They're all terrible.

There are two cool places right next to the Griffin that are pretty rad: The Beauty Bar and Don't Tell Mama. Beauty Bar has decent DJs in there some nights, so check event calendars online to see what's going on. Don't Tell Mama is a piano bar where they encourage people to be rowdy and sing along. Maybe not a great place for a bunch of drunk guys who want to talk about football, but definitely fun if you want to embarrass your buddy and make him sing Rocket Man over and over again.

For microbrews, Main Street Station (downtown) has a really good selection and they've won a ton of awards for their brews. We've talked about Ellis Island/Village Pub, so that's another option. Or if you're in the mood to drive, Tenaya Creek usually has a really good selection of their own brews, and the link will show you places around town where you can get their beer on tap.

Ya know, I read/post on a few different message boards, and it seems like every time Vegas comes up, people are like "Dudebro, you gotta spend the money and get a suite at Bellagio or Wynn. Forserious it's totally worth the extra cash." And I always try to be the voice of reason and remind people that if they're spending more than four hours a day in their room, they suck at Vegas. But I end up getting shouted down and just let people waste their money.

Imperial Palace is a great location, TI, Flamingo, Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Bally's are all decently cheap options in a good, central location. Don't even bother looking at Circus Circus, Stratosphere or Palace Station. The south end of the Strip is, in my opinion, vastly underrated. Rooms at the Tropicana can be had for cheap, they just dumped a bunch of money into the place for renovations, and it's on the corner with Excalibur, NY NY, and MGM, as well as walking distance to Mandalay Bay and Luxor.

Also, I heard that there's firing ranges around Vegas, I'd like to know the feeling of shooting a gun. Any recommendations?

Most hotels will let you leave your bags with the bell desk if you tell them you're a guest and waiting for family to arrive. That shouldn't be a problem.

There are a ton of ranges around Vegas for shooting. There are even a few that let you do fully automatic weapons. I would just Google gun ranges in Vegas, price shop, and see which place looks the most interesting. Or, stop by the TFR forum and see if a local is willing to take you out. EDIT: If anyone could also reccomend a good liquor store with wide selection, decent prices etc... That would be just great.

Albertson's, Smiths, Vons and Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market are all the major grocery store chains in town. We also have the Fresh & Easy and other natural-type stores, but none of those are 24 hours. 1) I am super paranoid on etiquette and not looking like a fool. The first bet I want to make at Vegas is going to a roulette table and throwing down $100 on black. I'm not sure even how to make this bet because I read that roulette chips are different and gives you roulette specific chips to use. Can anyone explain?

Easy enough. Just put the $100 on the table and ask for one black. Most roulette chips are different than normal casino chips but they still have the typical $5 $25 and $100 chips on the table. If they look at you funny, just tell them it's going on black/going on the outside. They'll know.

quote:

3) Poker. I love playing poker online, but I have literally played poker with actual chips maybe twice in my life at house games. I hold my own online but using actual chips scares me for some reason. Can anyone just give me a brief run down for someone who has pretty much exclusively played online? How do I get seat at a table, buy in, etc.

When you get to the poker room, there's a podium and a manager who takes care of everything. There should be a big board telling you what games are going on, but you can always ask. If there's an open seat, they'll seat you right away. Otherwise, your name gets put on a waiting list. You buy your chips from the manager, and he'll tell you what table to go to. It's pretty simple, in all honesty.

quote:

5) Sports books. Is it as easy as going up to the window and playing the over/under for X football game?

Yeah more or less. The games will typically be listed like:

1001 Broncos 51.5 +130
1002 Patriots -4.5 -145
1003 Saints -1.5 -110
1004 Dogshit 70 -105
etc...

The first four digit number is the number of the game/team you're betting on. Just say "I'll take 1001 over the total for $x". Most sports book employees will ask/double-check if there's any question. Just double-check that you're betting on the entire game and not just the first half. Most sports book employees are pretty friendly. I say 'Most' because the sports book employees at Green Valley Ranch are all cunts. You won't have to worry about them though since they're waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the strip. I just like to vent.

I'm wondering if you fine goons can help me know some currently favourable places for them to stay. They'd ideally like to be on the strip, and pay as little as possible, and have a clean room. That's really it. They like to wander and don't mind leaving the place they're staying to go play slots and look for pawn stores somewhere else. I told my dad about Bill's Gambling Hall, so he's looking into it. Thanks!

Bill's is undergoing a major construction project and is closed for the year.

The default 'Cheap but good location' hotel is the Quad (formerly the Imperial Palace). As a local, I hate driving there because the parking garage is basically guaranteed death, but it's got basically everything you're looking for. The Tropicana, which is way off at the south end of the strip just dumped a bunch of money into renovations, too, though I think they still have the cheap-o rooms (garden rooms, if I remember right - 3 story motel style rooms that are pretty awful). Planet Hollywood is a good spot too, though I'm not sure what their going rate is these days.

Tropicana just re-did theirs not too long ago. Huge, bright, gorgeous LED screens and a good amount of chairs. Never been there for NFL games though so I can't say how busy it gets on Sundays.

That's assuming you're staying within walking distance of the Luxor. LVH constantly has the best lines, prop bets, parlays, etc. That's a decent cab ride from Luxor though.

Zombies? Or middle-management? I can't tell...

I'm going to be in Vegas for only the second time in my brief 37 year old life this weekend, and my question to you folks is: I am a dumb who didn't pay attention to when his flight comes in compared to the other 7 dudes so I have a good four hours to kill before they all get in - However there is a Bruins game on in the interim: anybody know of a good place where I could probably catch said hockey game? And/or if you have any other good ideas for a time-kill between 5-9p on a thurs.

As a former Bostonian living in Vegas, it's hard to find any place that's truly dedicated to hockey. Your best bet is to find a sports book and grab an empty seat that has it's own TV. A little channel surfing and you should find the game. If you're more mobile, you can try Hammer and Ales on Russell at Valley View. It's sort of a defacto Boston bar, but I've only ever seen Sox games there. No idea if they have the NHL TV package.
