Probably because most people who own those bikes don't ride them more than 500 miles/year.

Just liability? More like "because they know they'll probably never pay a cent since most bike accidents are single vehicle only damaging your own property"

That and comp makes no sense to add on it since it's worth approximately nothing.

Depends where you live and the assholes around you. My first brand new bike got seriously vandalized a year after I got it. We're talking about $4.5k in damage to a year-old $8k bike while it was just sitting there parked, minding its own business. Insurance company told me to bring it to the local shop for a quote, they looked it over, I had a check in two days to fix it.

The ~$90/mo I was paying to fully insure it saved the day.

If I had a bike worth anything I would definitely get full comp, I regularly park it at a mall. I'm pretty sure right now they would write it off and hand me around 800 dollars if the handlebars got bent.

I just realized I misread what you wrote as "comprehensive is worth nothing" vs what you appeared to have meant as "bike is worth nothing" before my morning coffee. I've had a really stupid day already, drove to get gas smacked the corner of my driver's door off a bollard by the pump when I opened it, and dented the very tip of the bottom edge and scraped it to the metal...

I might just go back to bed.

Paying almost 400 per year for the DRZ through esurance. 500 comp. Pretty sure I added uninsured/underinsured as well since this is Southern CA.

Update on the sexist motorcycle mechanic.

I ended up buying that CBR 250 from the dealer and noticed that the previous owner left some insurance info under the seat.
P.O. wasn't even a girl.

I'm guessing the shop mechanic just says that about all the bikes to try to "reassure" potential buyers.
What a jackass.

With how much health care is in the US, you always want as much health coverage as you can get. You could easily max out your lifetime cap on a lot of health insurance plans just from one good wreck and be left with a lot of out of pocket cost.

I was back in the US for 5 months and quit riding specifically due to being priced out by the health insurance. I was going to be stuck with $143/mo with a $6,800 deductible on the exchanges until I found a temporary plan through my former university's alumni association that was basically the same thing but for $40/mo.

So I've got a Shoei full face helmet which feels like it keeps my face and head very safe indeed - BUT, I feel disconnected from the outside world..

I also have a snowboard helmet that I've worn when just riding the bike around the block to practice slow speed stuff, and I love the sound and the feel of the air..

Can you drill holes in the sides of a full face helmet where your ears are? I'm thinking some 1/8" holes, maybe 5-10 of them, in a circular type shape - will this compromise the structural integrity of the helmet in a major way?

Why don't they make the helmets like that to begin with, with some sort of vent by the ears?

It will absolutely destroy the structural integrity of the helmet, and wind noise and turbulence will turn your eardrums into a pink paste at any speed above 30mph. Which answers both your questions, really.

Maybe your sense of disconnection is just relative to much noise you're used to dealing with, and not a sign that your new helmet is objectively too quiet.

I wear a Shoei GT-Air and Hearos ear plugs and I'm pretty sure I hear everything around me just fine.

Although now I feel like there's way too much cabin noise when I'm in my car - sort of the opposite of what you're experiencing. I think as you wear the new helmet more you'll just get used to it, and it won't bother you anymore.

Oh yeah, overheard stupid motorcycle related poo poo: I checked out a craigslist Ninja 250 for a friend who's looking for an inexpensive bike. The seller mentioned that the owner previous to him told him to mix motor oil into the gas, and so that's what he's done. Dude wanted $1700; we didn't buy it.
