I don't suppose anyone is aware of any modernisation mods for Ultima Underworld 1 & 2? Just got them off of GoG and while I don't mind playing them as they are I'd obviously like mouselook at the very least and improved graphics at best.

There are none. The UUW engine is not as well understood as the System Shock one, although it uses many of the same formats, and System Shock was always more popular, so most of the hacking effort concentrates on that. The TSSHP project supported UUW as well as System Shock, but as it was never finished, this doesn't help much. You have to play UUW vanilla or not at all, I'm afraid.

Thanks - I expected as much. This is my first playthrough and would have liked some modern trappings but it's not really going to get in the way of my enjoyment.

So after playing through Singularity I'm in the mood for more of an old-school FPS. I considered replaying Quake 4, then remembered I never actually finished Heretic, so I'm getting stuck in to episode 4.

I was wondering, though: are there any good high-res textures and sprites for Heretic? Googling around found some references to "Razuman's texture pack", but all the download links are dead.

I'm also wondering if there are any Q2 ports out there that support the old mission packs, as I never finished them back in the day and kind of want to while I'm in an old-school FPS mood. I used q2max to replay the original a while ago, but as far as I can tell it doesn't support the expansions.

I'm also considering trying Doom again, oh god what is happening to me :ohdear:
KMQuake 2 is a very solid Quake 2 port with support for official expansions through it's main menu. Some of the graphical updates are quite nice too.

I play most custom wads on Hurt me Plenty :ohdear: . I've completed the two Dooms on UV but it seems that most custom levels are a touch harder and usually have me moving along at a snail's pace, quick loading thousands of times.

Oddly enough, if you put in a Gunman Chronicles cd-key into Steam it gives you access to the Half-Life Platinum Pack.

It wasn't actually made by Valve - I thought it was just a mod turned retail with their blessing. No reason for them to be actively supporting it now, though it would be nice to see it on Steam as I never had the opportunity to try it.

FYI, there's also http://store.steampowered.com/sub/11027/ which is all id and Bethesda games. So it's the above pack, plus Brink, Call of Cthulhu, Commander Keen, Fallout 3 + expansions, Heretic, Hexen, Hexen expansion, Hexen 2 (no Heretic 2?), Hunted: The Demon's Forge, RtCW, Rogue Warrior, Spear of Destiny, Morrowind, Oblivion, and Wolf3D all for $70. Not a bad deal, not bad at all. Hell, for Oblivion and Fallout 3 alone, that's worth it. Hmm...

Not forgetting Fallout: New Vegas and it's expansions, which is far far superior to FO3.

I'm yet to play Q4 even though I suspect I'll be disappointed - the TF2 launcher is well worth the price though.

Seeing as I keep seeing this sort of question, might I point you towards ZDL. It allows you to easily point GZDoom towards any number of WADs and arrange their load order. I think it's mentioned in the OP but not many people seem to pick up on it.

The bit that always sticks in my mind from Opfor was that sodding darkened sewer bit with the giant bug monster things. I must have died over a hundred times there.

It was developed by Gearbox so I'm not sure how much of it that Valve have included in their 'official' story of HL. I'm not generally a fan of Gearbox but Opfor was ok, apart from the aforementioned maddeningly frustrating moments.

Atomic Edition includes the original game (three episodes) + the only official expansion (adding a fourth episode).

That said, there's a shitload of unofficial (but authorized by 3D Realms) expansions developed by Sunstorm and WizardWorks which are not included in the Atomic Edition (and, AFAIK, cannot be bought anywhere these days): Duke Carribean, Duke it Out in D.C., Nuclear Winter, Duke XTreme, Duke Assault, Duke!ZONE, and Duke!ZONE 2.

A bunch of those are packs of hundreds of fanmade levels you're probably better off without, though.

So, it's the most complete version you can buy, but not "complete" in the sense that it includes all commercial Duke3d stuff.
That's what was stopping me - I remember a friend way back having the Carribean and Nuclear Winter packs. I guess I'll get the GoG version and then look through other channels for the other sets.

I realise I've asked for this before and that you have other projects on the go now but Kins, could you update ReDoom? It's still my go-to mod for a vanilla Doom experience but some bugs that were introduced with later GZDoom builds irk, like Spectres having regular Pinky gibs and the chainsaw behaving like it's hitting a wall wherever you fire it.
Brutal Doom is great and all but the difficulty hike is a bit much for me on most custom campaigns and ReDoom does all I want otherwise.

Edit: Also, while I'm on the subject of ĆoD, what exactly does "Ammo power" replenish? It doesn't seem to actively fill up the weapon I'm holding. The readme doesn't tell me anything.

From the patch notes Monster Mayhem is just a renamed difficulty level. Ammo power makes your weapons slightly more damaging.

How would you guys rank the episodes of the commercial releases of Doom 1, 2 and Final? I finally got to try Brutal Doom with Doom 1 and the first episode is incredibly good. I'm surprised John Romero designed such a fun shareware episode.

E2M1 and E2M2 haven't been as fun so far though. Is the shareware episode the best part of Doom 1? There's definitely a theme of the demo episodes being the best for games back then.

I think the general consensus is that E1 is the better episode of Doom 1 (and in my opinion pretty much better than anything in Doom 2). I remember reading somewhere that they spent much longer working on the first episode because, as you've mentioned, it was the shareware episode and most people's first contact with the game. That's not to say that the next two episodes are weak - I think they just take a couple of levels to really kick in. I'm not especially a fan of Thy Flesh Consumed though that may be because my skill level doesn't seem to be quite as high as other Doom players and I find it a bit frustrating.

Seconded. There is still nothing quite like Thief 1 & 2 (I don't really count 3). Massive sprawling levels full of little details that you won't see if you go straight for the goal, objectives that change depending on difficulty level and a surprisingly engrossing story.
