It's not quite as old as Goldsrc but it's getting there. It's only through constant updates that it manages to stay relevant.

Still, Source engine is a part of the actual "modern FPS" games, also HL2 is from 2004 and this thread stops on 1999 (Quake 3 released on Dec '99). Deus Ex isnt even here being from 2000. Im not meant to be picky but looking closely at what we have here, anything past that era is QUITE different.

Unless you want to use your retail CDs, there is no reason to not buy Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Descent 1/2 and id say Unreal from GOG (last one gets always super cheap in steam often too). No DRM and you can pretty much lay any mod/source port on them, and if you somehow gently caress up, just delete the whole folder and reinstall. No DirectX, framework or other 3rd party cept for DosBox wich you can choose to not install.

Quoting this because i've been playing the first 4 maps, and while they're different, they feel familiar and is a good thing. You think you're playing John Romero's maps... in a good way. Im just starting and feels like the best wad i've played in years (coupled with brutal doom).

My only complain wich is a minor one, is the voice for "gently caress yourself" feels wrong since he changed it after v0.11. Other than that he keeps making this mod better. Oh and the shotgun lacks the front tritium sight wich i dont get why, but the new sound and sprite when its on the ground are both great.

New trailer is freaking awesome with Serious Sam 3 theme:

Brutal Doom makes Alien Vendetta quite a lot harder. Zombie soldiers, sargeants and chingun guys are more accurate (but they aren't hitscan enemies either if im not wrong), imps leap to melee, and pinkies deal more damage than vanilla to say a few examples. Your weapondry is better overall too but i found that the improved enemies kinda outweight your weapons in AV unless you know the maps perfectly. Thats my experience of course, wich was better with Doom The Way Id Did or UAC Ultra wads.

Heretic II was developed by Raven and published by Activision, so It's in the same boat as the rest of Raven's games, exept for Quake 4 wich was published by Activision but now Bethesda owns the rights because of their ID partnership (ID used to be with Activision aswell).

That doesn't explain why it isn't on Steam or GOG.

I agree with E1 being the best episode in Doom, while the others are just not as good, but still better than most (if not all) Doom 2 ones. At the other hand for some reason (may be Brutal Doom gameplay changes), TNT and Plutonia are quite nice and right behind Doom 1 episodes in terms of quality for me.

Is there any mod that ports the super shotgun and enemies from Doom 2 to Doom 1? Want to try E1 facing a mancubus or a chaingun guy where I normally face normal zombies or Imps.

Real talk though, I'm pretty much the opposite: I like Doom quite a lot, I just grew up with Marathon. Actually a lot of Id/Doom/Romero level design practices were my own guidelines for making levels too. I feel like modern games, even good ones, focus too much on spectacle and have really bland level design. That's why Hard Reset disappointed me -- even though it was allegedly a callback to classic FPS gaming, it had ultra-linear "baby's first shooter" level design, and none of the depth and exploration of the good classics.

The new secondary fire gives it more use. Most of the time when you needed extra rate of fire you had to ditch it because you couldn't move, and if you didn't need to move is because you had enough range, so most of the shots would miss making other weapons a better choice.

A thing that i agree is the old 'gently caress YOURSELF' sound was better but everything else got better in my opinion.
