The most recent thing he wrote was an in-universe history book for world building lol

He's been on a spree of that of late. At this point I wish he'd just write TWoW and ADoS from a maester's perspective. He might actually finish that way.

He wrote 3 good books, and a weak messy one with some good moments, and one so truly horrible that Gutenberg would've smashed his printing machine if he'd known

I had more enjoyment reading book 10 of Wheel of Time where there are three chapters per main character where they just travel, ending with a single Rand chapter where he cleanse the source with next to no buildup

That was book 9. Book 10 is the one where Jordan got the timelines back in sync by having every significant plotline react to the cleansing by going "Wow something interesting is happening over there. Should we teleport in or just not give a gently caress?" and then deciding to not give a gently caress because we already saw who was at the event and it wasn't any of them.

Robert gives Storm's End to Stannis. After his death, Stannis rallies the Stormlords and, via his Florent allies and an advantageous marriage of his young brother Renly, the Reachmen, and takes King's Landing in a swift and brutal assault. The Bastards of Lannister are put to the sword. Renly has a party. Stannis refuses to recognize Robb Stark. The Young Wolf is swatted down and condemned for betraying not only his true king but his father's own wishes. Rickard Karstark is made Warden of the North. Daenarys dies pooping in a field. Tywin marries Tyrion to Shereen Baratheon, the heir apparent. The two grumpy, stern old men agree that war is war, and what's needed now is stability and rule of law. Dorne is angry offscreen. Peace and order reign in the Seven Kingdoms.

Two books, series over, you're welcome George.

But what stops the Others from killing everyone, especially with Stannis having no motivation to rush to the Wall to save the Kingdom from the Wildlings?

I've heard once I get to book 4 things will go a completely different direction from the show. That's really why I decided to do this, just to see what actually happens. But how far are they going to diverge? Unrecognizably?

It's not completely unrecognizable but there's definitely a lot of differences and most of them only make the show characters look stupider.

Yeah, it's weird how they thought the point of the series was the political intrigue that's been the focus of every book that's actually been released, and not the magical fantasy stuff that's going to be important any day now.

I mean, everything in the North plot lines have had the message of "All this political squabbling is distracting everyone from the real threat that humanity as a whole needs to be uniting against" and a lot of Dany's more metaphorical moments have had her being exposed to the message too (like what she sees in the House of the Undying). The fact that the author himself got distracted by it doesn't make it any less alarming that the people chosen to adapt the books weren't aware of the underlying message of the story.

When does the show go 100% off the rails from the books? S7? 6?

It probably never fully goes off the rails because of the staggering Xiahou Dun mentioned. There's every reason to think that everyone's ultimate S8 fate is what's in store for them in the books even if it's not remotely how they get there, so frankly some characters are probably getting back on track in the show as the last stragglers are finally jumping from their book plot lines.

Something I do enjoy about the books is that, while every word of that is true, Dany is written in such a way that most people, especially on a first read, are totally going to root for her. And she's kinda this great big red herring that is over shadowing Jon. Then there's the baby-targ introduced in Dances With Dragons that I don't even understand the purpose for. The show cuts out a lot of cool and interesting side plots and characters, but that was one I think the show was smart to do without.

His plot purpose is to preempt and gently caress over Dany. The books have made it pretty clear that as much as the nobility hates the Targs, from the small folk perspective the Mad King is looking less and less lovely with every war crime the new rulers commit in his absence. There's plenty of folk who would rise up for a true Targaryen, and so fAegon is on route to beat Dany to Westeros, win the popular appeal, offer her a version of what she wants that she won't take on principle (become his queen and inherent subordinate after all she's gone through), and promptly get eaten by dragons to absolutely ensure that the small folk will be just as done with the Targs as everyone else. If he weren't there and she showed up first she'd have the Throne in a matter of weeks with no problems, with him there even if she takes King's Landing she still won't have the kingdom.

His thematic purpose is to contrast Jon. FAegon looks the part of the secret heir, raised in the wilderness outside the kingdom by scholars and nuns so that he'd be a true ruler and nothing but virtue - but because it was a deliberate attempt to create him and because he was raised knowing his intended fate, he's actually an awful little poo poo who won't be any better a ruler than any of those who came before him. Jon meanwhile is a true secret heir and while he was raised by nobility he was genuinely humbled his whole life by being treated as a bastard and his training in the wilderness didn't involve being the Specialist Boy but just another guy who came to power by popular acclaim. Dany not having this either is why in the end she'll go crazy.

It's still just another huge complication that didn't need this much focus though.

It’s been 12-13 years since I read Dances With Dragons; doesn’t one of Dany’s chapters end in her dragons roasting one or the suitors from Dorne?

One of the suitor's chapters, but yes. Difference is, that's far away, it's his own fault (he was trying to steal it) and no one except the Martell's really liked Quentyn. FAegon and his other bride, Arianne Martell, (he'll try to mimic his alleged ancestor by having two wives and three dragons) will die in Westeros, possibly in King's Landing, at Dany's command, and the small folk won't like their figurehead being killed one bit.

Obviously the Ironborn burn each other and especially their women and even more especially their victims (especially the women victims) to make iron. Human sacrifice is as common as trees in GRRMWorld so it can be used as a tree substitute in most circumstances.

Even if Ned never fights Jaime and therefore doesn't get shanked in the leg, there's no way ~100 Stark guards fight their way around thousands of Gold cloaks, Lannister mooks, and Baratheon foot soldiers plus whatever loyalist Kingsguard pulled duty that day. Renly, dumb as he was, even recognized that and got the hell out of dodge as soon as Cersei tipped her hand.

Only way for Ned to live in an alternate telling is to never go south in the first place, except to clean house with all the Northerners he could muster

Ned could also probably do good for himself arresting Cersei and outing her instead of giving her the opportunity to run away with her incest babies, but that's the one bit of his trauma it's pretty understandable he couldn't overcome.

I read, in a Jaime chapter, that their mother caught them doing "stuff" when they were fairly young.

Yup, and then in true ASOIAF fashion she suddenly remembered that she was a woman who'd given birth and died instantly, ensuring that her horrible twins could go back to playing hide the pickle.
