Speaking of MASH I would say Donna is pretty much Radar, Josh has a bit of Hawkeye in him, and Leo is Col. Potter.

I always get depressed after watching The West Wing because real US politics is filled with people that are much more incompetent and evil. Real republicans are as close to comic book villains as you can get, while the Democrats never make any worthwhile progress on anything.

.... Also I didn't like the death penalty episode just because nobody pointed out the obvious; if you execute people you will also execute innocent people.

That's not really relevant. You can say the same about any punishment. e.g. If you jail people you can also jail innocent people. Honestly I'd rather be wrongly executed than wrongly given life imprisonment. Especially that after about a year or so in the American prison system I would have probably lost my humanity. Life isn't an numbers game, life isn't better just because you reach the bigger number, quality matters as much as quantity.

Josh's replacement was Cliff Calley, the Republican Donna dated in season 3. He showed up for a couple episodes and then was an offscreen character in season 7.

Yeah, that and Vinick on staff would never fly in the real world, in today's political climate you're more likely to have an Al-Qaeda member on staff rather than a member of the opposition party.

Real life has had much shittier/corrupt presidential siblings, Santos's brother was a lightweight, off the top of my head:

Donald Nixon:

Billy Carter:

William H.T. "Bucky" Bush

Roger Clinton

Neil Bush:

Maybe if the show went on Santos's brother would be caught doing more and more corrupt things leading Santos to frame it all on that bastard Chicky Hines.

The grudge refers to the "Ricky Tahoe" character in Studio 60 being a not too subtle reference to West Wing writer Rick Cleveland.

I've always heard this, but I'm curious, when did they work together? And is it just some weird coincidence that Kristen Chenoweth was on The West Wing, but not until Sorkin left?

Yep, this explains it all:

Serious answer: Just read my above link. He didn't acknowledge or let talk West Wing writer Rick Cleveland who co-wrote the episode that won the Emmy.

Why did Moira Kelly end up leaving the west wing? Was it just because she sucked?

She left the show after the first season after deciding with producer Aaron Sorkin that her character had played its story out and that Janel Moloney served as a better foil for Bradley Whitford. Her character was not mentioned on the show again, leading to the term Mandyville.

I think Aaron never used her properly. She is in fact the best snarky bitch ever. See Cutting Edge.

I never really understood her role, it would make sense to bring her on a new campaign (ala Bruno) but not as a staffer. It was CJs job to communicate the White House message to the public, Toby's to help shape the msssage and Josh's job to help execute the president's legislative agenda among the House and Senate. Her role jumped the shark when she took it upon herself to get two Chinese Pandas for a zoo, at that point Donna already was doing more important work than Mandy.

Since season 1 was never aired in widescreen, I assume they shot it with full screen in mind. Watching it in widescreen, are there any screw ups in the edges of the screen they didn't bother cutting out since they were showing in full screen? Boom mikes or anything like that?

Is it awkward watching it in widescreen when that's not how they shot it? Is it basically everything crowded in the middle, with useless stuff on the edges?

(Please note I have been a huge proponent of widescreen since before widescreen TVs became the norm. Been defending black bars for years. I'm just curious how it works here, when they shot it without thinking it would ever be in widescreen.)

I forget which season but I saw a wide screen error, might be season 1. Sam and Toby are in Toby's office discussing something and Sam shuts the door and the next cut it's Sam sitting on Toby's office couch but on the left edge of the screen you can see the door is still open.

I think the conservative judge might have been a slight nod to Earl Warren, a Republican appointee that surprised many conservatives by handing down very social liberal decisions.

You guys don't know how Sorkin writes, it was probably a cut scene that went something like this:

*Enter the Father entering the West Wing escorted by Josh Lyman and Donna Moss*

Josh (Speaking to the Father): And here is where all the real magic happens
Donna: He used to saying that only to Women
Josh: Donna
Donna: Josh
Josh: Donna
Donna: Josh
Josh: Donna, don't you have somewhere else to be?

*enter Joey Lucas*
Joey: Josh we have to talk about these numbers.
Josh: This is Joey Lucas, she's a Quaker
Joey: Thanks Josh

then a conversation between Joey and him take place on the current situation and what she believes should be done and how she advised the President

The fact that the President takes the censure over having the news about Leo come out is one of my favourite things in the whole show. Sounds pretty stupid in such a far reaching and impressive show, but it's just a pretty touching moment. This guy's the most powerful man in the world and he'll take a hit rather than let his best friend be dragged through the mud.

I remember the main reason he justified in doing it was that he was simply wrong and he never apologized for it.
