The real size is maybe 1GB and honestly I'd say it's worth it, especially if you have a computer without an optical drive.

It's a feature, actually. It has to do with the new resume stuff. Some apps allow for an iOS style "suspend" of sorts that basically results in it quitting or dumping one of its processes when OS X deciders it needs more resources. The logic is that you won't notice if an app has quit because as soon as you switch back to it via CMD+Tab or the Dock the resume feature lets the program snap back to life exactly the way you left it.

I'm not sure why it happened on a computer with 8GB of ram though. In my experience, Safari has only let OS X dump its Web Content process once or twice and I'm on a 2010 MBA with 2GB of ram. Could be a bug.

In any occasion, I don't mind the feature much.

So I decided that it's time I learned to program in Objective C. Of course, Xcode 4 is fairly new, and all the guides I found use 3.2. No problem, I thought, and proceeded to download and install it. I open up /Developers and… no Xcode app. In fact, the folders are mostly empty.

Ok, no problem, I'll just uninstall and reinstall it. There's even an easy one-line terminal command to uninstall it: sudo /Developer/Library/uninstall-devtools –mode=all. Except uninstall-devtools isn't anywhere in that folder. Or on my hard drive anywhere. I tried installing 3.2 again without removing it, thinking that maybe OS X would be smart enough to install the files I was missing, but that didn't help.

So how to I remove Xcode? And will reinstalling it even work on Lion?

I would just delete /Developer but doesn't Xcode scatter little bits over the OS?

Gordon Cole posted:

Umm, did you not think to try looking in /Developer/Applications to find Xcode before doing all this wacky stuff? If you downloaded Xcode 4 through the app store it would be in your dock or launchpad anyways.

I doubt 3.2 will work with Lion. I don't really know what the best way to undo all the stuff you did is, you can probably get away with trashing the /Developer folder. If you got Xcode through the app store, you should have an app called Install Xcode or whatever inside /Applications that you can run. Otherwise just redownload that through the app store.

edit: Oh I see, you were trying to install 3.2 from the beginning. That's your problem -- it probably just doesn't work with Lion. Just get Xcode 4, it shouldn't be too hard to translate most of what you find on Xcode 3 to 4. If you get stuck, Apple's documentation is pretty good and should be up to date.
I didn't install 4, I installed 3.2 from the .dmg I downloaded from the Dev center. I guess I should have assumed that it wouldn't work with Lion, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

I am really loving hating that they did away with "Save As..." because now doing things like adjusting the size of a scanned image in Preview and trying to save it to the desktop is COMPLETELY GODDAMN IMPOSSIBLE without jumping through eight hundred hoops. Rather than just opening the file in Preview, adjusting the size, and choosing "Save As...", you've got to do some hokey horseshit to duplicate the file, make your changes, then "Save..." the file the way you want it and delete the original from wherever the gently caress.

And it took a bunch of monkeying with "Duplicate" and "Save a Version" to even figure out how to get it to do what I need. And this Version saving poo poo is also awful, since you adjust the size, save a version, and then close/reopen Preview only for it to pop open everything you'd already closed and TRIED to adjust.

I can't stand this bullshit.

I dunno, it makes sense to me and it's only an extra step. Make changes to the file, hit duplicate, then save the duplicate to the desktop. If you want to keep the original the way it is, Preview (and other apps) allow for that—it even pops up a dialog asking you what you want to do with the original when you duplicate it. Not that you need to worry about that, because even if you do accidentally save modifications to the original you can always pop open versions and revert it.

If you close the windows before you quit, it shouldn't pop them back open when you open the program again.

So i've been experiencing an issue with my (brand new!) 2014 MPBR and Safari 8 (I upgraded to Yosemite as soon as I created an account) where the computer is still working (so not completely frozen) but it won't accept input from the trackpad or keyboard. I've been through a few different troubleshooting steps, including changing the resolution back from 1440x900 to whatever "best for retina" is, disabling adblock and click to flash, and uninstalling Flash, but I can reliably replicate the issue even after all that by simply loading a page on YouTube. I've had it happen on both video pages as well as playlist pages. I know the computer isn't completely freezing because the screen updates (the video plays) but I can't interact with the computer for about 5 seconds.

It also sometimes happens when I open System Preferences, but not every time.

When I replicate the issue in Safari with Activity Monitor open, I have noticed that Activity Monitor freezes for a second or two; when it refreshes, kernel_task jumps to the top reporting ~15% processor usage.

Chrome plays and browses YouTube just fine.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue?

This More Space option that "Looks like 1680*1050" (Give people real options, Apple) is -not- Retina, correct?

And, the advertised 2560*1600 is just Apple-speak for their pixel-doubled default 1280*800?

I obviously haven't kept up on these things over the past couple years since it didn't apply to me until now.

I have scarily good vision and the 1680*1050 on a 13" is going to have to do I guess, but I wonder if I'm losing out on any other "Retina" benefits.

The pixels are so small that you won't notice a difference. I'm using the "More Space" option right now and everything looks super sharp, so much so that even tiny text like this submission box that I'm currently typing in (it's roughly an 8pt font) can be read easily. Sometimes I think I've capitalized an "i" but didn't and can't tell the difference because of how small the text is, but that's my only issue with this resolution setting.

Well, that and there's a pretty significant performance loss from running Dolphin while I have the computer resolution increased, but I'm not really surprised by that.

The only way to call is either call from your contacts, or right click a number on a website/email/whatever. If you want to dial a number, you'll need to open TextEdit (or something similar), type the number in there, and then right-click to call. The lack of dial pad makes it impossible to dial into a bridge too. I have a bridge number saved in my contacts, but the "dial ####.." option that shows up on my iPhone is absent on the little continuity bubble in the top-right. I transfer the call to my phone so I can dial into the bridge, and then I can't transfer it back to the Mac.

Here's a link to the guide I used: http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.fr/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-external.html

It was way easier than I expected (and works fantastically), though it does require access to a Windows computer or a virtualized Windows install on your Mac. I should note that the guide did get one small fact wrong--when you boot from the external, there's no need to wait for the chime to press the option key. You can press and hold it as soon as the computer shuts down and it'll boot into the boot drive picker.

Also a quick (I guess fairly obvious) side note that isn't covered in the guide: after holding down option while booting you'll see three drives; your Mac's HD, one labeled Bootcamp, and one labeled EFI. You'll want to select Bootcamp to boot to Windows, since EFI, well, takes you to Windows' EFI menu. Once or twice the EFI drive has appeared before Bootcamp drive did; just wait a few seconds and the Bootcamp drive should appear.
