I was all stoked to install it on a machine at work before I play around with my own Mac but then I realized that I have no idea how to buy it for the enterprise. Guess I have to make some phone calls. How are other companies handling it?

Got an answer from the official Apple supplier of our university. Me: Hey, how can I purchase Lion for the machines we have here? Her: We don't know yet. Thanks.

How you acquire Lion is up in the air, but once you do, you can use the disk image trick and use it to install or make images from and deploy it out to the remainder of your computers. Ooh interesting. I'll email the Apple Rep and see what he says about that. Thanks!

Ah, apparently there's a volume licensing option on the Apple Store. It's discounted (for us, pretty heavily) per license and you get a download code for the App Store. You can then put it on however many machines you bought licenses for.

What sort of apps would you guys consider must-have for an OSX newcomer? Depends heavily on what you want with it / where you're coming from. If you are a Windows user, TotalFinder rocks your world. As far as iWork, yes, it's a separate package. It reads Office docs just fine, but it won't save them if I remember correctly. Personally, I like them just fine for casual use, but if you're going to be doing heavy spreadsheet stuff, or having to do a lot of file exchanging with office apps, it's probably best to just get Office.

I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it makes sense to me for a portable computing device, and the success of the iPad kind of points that way. Someone posted earlier that their laptop seems to run hotter with Lion, and I don't want it to overheat, but I think fullscreen would be really good for web browsing since the screen is so small on this. I've also got a Macbook 4,1 and I really like Lion on it so far. You won't be able to do the fancy new gestures with your trackpad, but it sure seems peppier to me. Doesn't seem to get any hotter, and it doesn't run the fan anymore than it did with SL. I think the battery life is a little reduced, but I grant that could also be my imagination.

mllaneza posted:Yeah, pretty much. I bet there was a senior UX designer who has always been annoyed at Save As... Either you're duplicating it and changing the file name, which should be done in the Finder, or you're changing file format, which is technically an Export. I hate purists sometimes, but this is ok. Save As... is most commonly used for versioning, which is now built in to 10.7 apps, so it's redundant. Really? So I should be closing the doc that I'm working on, going to Finder, finding my doc, copying the file, changing the name, going back into the document again and keep working? All instead of hitting Save as... when I'm right loving there already? unix guys.

I like it because I may have a ton of poo poo open and an upgrade pops up and wants to reboot, and I don't have to worry about losing my place on what I was doing. Also Lion will claim the memory back just like iOS devices do once programs start getting updated to support it. And why does everyone say the dots aren't under running programs in finder, my machine has them.
