Is there anything wrong with loading up an iMac with mismatched RAM?

I just ordered a new 27" iMac that will be coming with 4GB in a 2x2GB configuration, are there any issues with throwing another 8GB (2x4GB) in there for 12GB, or should I bite the bullet and throw out the 2GB sticks and go all the way to 16GB?

I've just done that myself and everything I've read suggests it shouldn't be an issue.

The only real advice I've seen is to place the same amount of RAM in each bank. So you'd have:

Left ------- Right
2GB ------- 2GB
4GB ------- 4GB

Something something about double channel bandwidth.

Lion specific: If you bring your computer out of sleep and go to watch a video it'll likely freeze with the cursor still moveable. Seems widespread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194165

I've had this 4-5 times since I got my iMac on Friday. I just wanna watch porn Steve.

I just turn my computer off instead of putting it to sleep. One of the guys in that thread thinks the video memory isn't getting cleared before sleep, and when it wakes up Lion thinks it's free to put poo poo in.

Seems like plenty of Apple engineers are contacting people asking for logs though, and one said they were working on it over the weekend. I hope they patch it early next week.

That makes sense actually. If it's true it should be a fairly easy fix for them.

Looking at bit more a few of them are saying their 10.7.2 developer build has it fixed. That has iCloud built into it though, so I'm not sure if Apple would want to release it straight away.

Does anyone have any gaming experience with the 27" iMac with the core i5 processor and the 2gb graphics card? I'm thinking of getting back into games when I start a more quiet job, and I'm torn between heavily upgrading my old rig or going for that iMac with a Windows dual boot. So how does that iMac perform game-wise?

Runs Crysis 2 at 1920x1080 on high/ultra, was running BF3 Alpha at 1920x1080 on high, everything else is fine. Like Zeta said, don't expect to play on the native resolution.

Retina MacBook Pro Top Tip:

If you've got folders in your dock, right click and change them to display as 'Folder' instead of 'Stack'.

Apparently displaying all those icons stacked on top of each other causes low frame rate when swiping between screens/using Mission Control.

Went to look at a MacBook Pro Retina at the store today.

Gotta buy one now. Having 1920x1200 with pixels that small would be amazing for the type of work I do (lovely windows apps that are so cluttered with UI poo poo you need at least 1600 pixels of width to work with).

Now I need to sell my Air that I bought 4 months ago.

FYI it's 2880x1800, and Photoshop CS6 doesn't support retina yet. They showed it off at WWDC but there's been no ETA on the update.

It will be amazing for designing retina iPad and iPhone apps when its out though.

What bothers me is Adobe is only implying a Retina update for Photoshop, and has mentioned nothing about Retina updates for their other apps.

Took my rMBP in today to get the screen changed due to image persistence. Should have it back in a few days.

Protip: Take a photo of the checkerboard test ( http://www.marco.org/rmbp-irtest.html ) and the resulting persistence before you go. It's generally at its worst after a few hours of use, which is hard to show in a few minutes at the Genius Bar. I showed how badly it was appearing in Photoshop and the guy was cool with changing it. Just took my rMBP 15" in to get the screen replaced due to image retention issues. Got to the point where closing my browser would leave an afterimage on the screen for 3-4 minutes. The guy at the store tried to talk me out of it, saying this was normal and expected from an IPS display, kind of funny.

I explained that I design on it and had a photo showing how bad the checkered pattern looked test after 3-4 mins. Guy was totally cool with changing it, even though he said it only just failed their "image retention test".

They want to ward off any inexperienced users because it costs them ~£450 to replace it. If you sound remotely knowledgable about the issue, they usually won't risk trying to bullshit you.

I did get a Samsung screen as a replacement. I imagine they stock more of them, or at least have some way to identify them so users don't come back for future repairs.

Same deal on my 2012 with a Samsung replacement screen.

It seems like it's a pixel set to full brightness compared to the others. About 600x100 in from the edge of the screen.

What's the usual lifetime for OS support on the Mac Pro? Come the next refresh I'm considering getting one, although I wouldn't be doing that much video with it, and 3D isn't in my plans at the moment.

I don't want another iMac because I have a large monitor already, and I don't view the Mac Minis as particular powerful. Would love it if they did a middle ground between Mac Mini and Pro, mind.

As for the Mac minis, they could be decent again with an Iris Pro if that "mid 2014" rumor pans out. Ideally it'd be a full redesign that could take more than just the usual notebook CPU of course.

I'd probably buy a Mac tower of any kind with the innards of an iMac, that's all I've needed in the past. I just don't need two 27" on my desk, not enough space.

The one thing I'd be worried about with buying a Mac Pro is future HiDPI monitor support, since I don't think Displayport 1.3 can be added via firmware upgrade. It seems likely that a version introduced late this year would have it, but I'm not sure.

That's one of the main reasons I haven't wanted to go with the current one. I know it can push 4k, but after using a Retina MBP I really want to make sure the next one I get can run HiDPI.

Also the base Mac Pro coming with only 256GB is a bit of a joke.

I'm having trouble deciding between a top of the line MacBook and top of the line MacBook Pro. My use consists of typing up papers, ferrying to and fro school, and connecting to a projector to watch movies and what not. I'm a pretty heavy gamer, but I do most of it on a PC. Can't decide if the super portability of the 12" would make it win out over the port selection of the Pro. Also the MacBook would match my space gray watch and phone, so...

I'd be upgrading from a 2011 MacBook Air, if it makes any difference.

So I have a 2012 base rMBP and just got the new 2015 12" Macbook (1.3GHz, 512GB). It feels as responsive as that old rMBP to me. Yosemite seems to have small framerate issues for transitions between things like Mission control and going between spaces. I'm glad to hear they fixed this in El Capitan though.

I bought it so I can use the rMBP as my work machine (connected to a monitor) for all things design/coding related and use the Macbook for personal stuff and as a backup. Browsing, IRC, Netflix, a bit of Photoshop, Sketch, etc seems to be fine with this new Macbook. It feels like a perfectly capable machine to me and I really like the portability of it. The keyboard is pretty large since it's edge to edge now, and within a week I'm totally fine with how the keys feel. My rMBP keys feel weirdly large now.

I'd only suggest the rMBP if you think you'll be gaming on it, or aim to be rendering stuff like video from AfterEffects or FCP, or maybe you want the bigger screen. Otherwise I'm really pleased with it.

Would those UltraFines accept a 1080 image from a PS4, or 1440 from a PC? Trying to gauge whether the monitor is built only to work with recent Macs.

yes and no. regardless you're probably going to be buying a dongle for the ps4 even if that works at all. and if you're going for 5k, you'd need to have 2 DP1.2 ports to get up to 5k. (and maybe additional lag from upscaling to 5k?)

Uuuuuuugh. Do monitors handle upscaling themselves, or is that with done on the computer's end?

I was thinking you could send it a 1440 signal (single cable), and it'd just map each pixel to 2x2 on a retina display. It'd look like any old 27" 1440p set then, while using Windows.
