This isn't really on topic, but there's nowhere else to post it. I'm an American living and working in Canada, and I just finished my first full year. Looking now into RRSP and holy crap is it poo poo-tons better than the IRA system down south. In the US, you can invest $5k a year and that's that. In Canada, you get up to ~$20k a year, and if you don't max out one year, you can make up the difference later. Holy smokes! Haven't quite figured out how CPP compares to SSI, one step at a time. Also the whole thing about higher taxes is a myth for most people. For lower incomes the tax bracket jump kicks in later, and the upper cap is actually lower. Tho granted in the US there are more deductions and the like for mega rich, but most people don't fall in that category. And there are some differences between states and provinces. But up here we get that year of family leave and a little benefit called healthcare. (Sorry for the hijak, tuyop, but you've talked about this stuff here.  )Oh, Canada!

I'm a little bit bitter about it now. Part of the class was working with high school coaches at a tournament and I now know more than four of the five I met who were just science or English teachers who had watched some volleyball drill videos after being voluntold to coach volleyball. I wouldn't be a high level coach because I don't have the technical know-how but I could totally manage. Another part of my terrible performance is the fact that I hated team sports and never played any growing up. I'm clumsy and unskilled in anything but weight lifting and endurance sports and poo poo like fencing or squash. It must look like I don't take the class seriously or something to the professor. I practiced my rear end off and bought a volleyball ($40 sick Nike ball, more like volleyballin, amirite?) to go over the skills with toeshoes for hours on my own time. It didn't matter, though.

There was an $18 ball, none of which were round and the surface material was some sort of cheap foam that you could pick off. There was a $24 ball that seemed cool, but it was an indoor ball and we play outside. The Nike one was just outstanding and beautiful. Never. This is a lifelong ball.

If you didn't look like you were trying hard enough, the teacher would ask you to sit out -- whether or not you actually were trying. My gangly post-pubescent self was pretty awful at basketball, and I got a B in 10th grade gym because of it.

Actually I think receiving college credit for doing sports is kind of dumb in the first place, much less requiring it. Mind you, I took archery like five times, to get the maximum number of pass/fail PE credits I could get, because why not? It was fun. But it's idiotic, too. College credits are supposed to be a measure of your academic performance, not how well you do sports.  A fraction of a point in your GPA can be enough to put you past the threshold for magna cum laude/summa cum laude honors, though, so if you're going to have for-credit PE, at least make it pass/fail. You show up, participate, maybe get into a little better shape? OK you pass. No impact on your GPA.

Really though, it's the best part of the last semester, and not only for the fun of playing volleyball in the middle of dry lecture courses, but because it's the first thing in school I've really sucked at. It was so frustrating and dreadful to go into an evaluation knowing that despite my practice and whatever else I'd done, I'd still get a mediocre or failing mark. It was like I didn't know the language or something and it really helped give me a sense of empathy for students who don't read good or do other stuff good. Now I know I'll never run a class so that it favors students with academic or physical aptitudes in an unbalanced way if I can help it. Like, if 30% of a course is a standardized written exam, most of the other 70% will have an option for some other form of evaluation like a dance or play or debate or rap or something.

You had to take three, so...
