That is super cool, what are your financial plans once that's done? Sock it away for a rainy day? Aggressive retirement savings?

Doesn't make much sense to buy a house until you're done with school and have a better idea of your future career and where you'll land.

We're going to keep aiming for 50-60% savings in order to achieve financial independence by 30-35. There are lots of things we have in mind. Most important, we want to have child(ren), though I'm leaning heavily toward adoption.

We also want to travel pretty extensively, living in other countries and such, so I'm not sure if homeownership is for us yet. We have a small plot of land to improve (with a yurt and permaculture) and use as a home base, but living on a sailboat might be our version of homeownership. Who knows.

More financially, it's possible that we might end up with a lot more wealth than we need because I intend to teach forever, so I'd like to set up a small scholarship or bursary in my thirties.

Toeshoes will probably end up going back to school for nursing or police studies or maybe dietetics. She'd rock at any of those things, but nursing would be pretty sweet combined with my teaching for traveling around.

And all this sounds lofty and good, but we have a ton of wants too. Like a laptop, tv, laser eye surgery, iPad, it goes on. Our consumer desires know no ends. Saving for this stuff if we want it and reconciling the philosophy of that insatiability will be problematic forever.

I cannot understand the appeal of an iPad. I don't understand what it allows you to do better than a laptop. It's just... shiny?

A TV, however, is a different matter entirely - to watch a movie on a large TV in a dark room in HD is a very different experience from watching it on a laptop.

Some objects do enrich your life by being things that you use on a regular basis. They are worth owning on that basis, and attempting to not desire them is fairly pointless unless you're becoming actively ascetic for some reason (which, to my mind, is different from frugal).

I think that your consumer desires do have an end, and if you really figured out what you want to own and sat on that list a while you could have a plan to be done with it. There's no reason for you to live in tension your whole life. My assumption was that the point of all this was to live the best life possible.

iPads are awesome. They let you do lots of things in lots of places and positions, and they make doing these things pleasant. It's way more fun to use an iPad to browse the web or watch a TV show on a bed or couch than it is to use a laptop. Their portability/mobility in general is just far better than a laptop.

We're still having he tablet vs laptop debate?

One isn't a replacement for the other. If you can't think of good uses for a tablet, then you're not thinking hard enough. I really don't need a laptop ever again. Tablet and desktop for me.

Then again, some people are still angry that the command line was phased out of common usage. ;)

Reason 1 is ok, reason 2 is TERRIBLE, reason 3 is ok

The part that you can excise from your brain is reason 2, as it is pure fetishism.

It is a consuming machine, not a producing machine like a laptop, although my objections may be more aesthetic in nature... although as a programmer I should be happy that the next generation will provide less competition if they stick to their tablets!

Well I guess it's a good thing that reason 2 was a joke.

It's seriously off-topic but tablets are great for producing some stuff. Like education. The amount of times I've been tutoring or doing group work and I wished I could just pull up a mind mapping app or whiteboard or something to work through a problem with have me pretty much sold. Many high schools here have hundreds of iPads, though. So maybe I'll never have to buy one.

Also, I was volunteering at a junior high school yesterday for an LGBTQ-rights awareness group and part of the exercise was to have the students make assumptions about you, students kept guessing that I was a teacher. :3:

That's consuming. That is, the tablet is consuming content (applications) already produced by someone else, rather than being used as a tool to create content. OK yes, you can send a tweet or draw on a whiteboard with a tablet, but it's considered very lightweight.

There's nothing wrong with tablets being designed to consume, mind you, it's just a worthy distinction, particularly for idiots who have been proposing (for the better part of a decade now, actually) that tablets are going to replace laptops. The reality is that they are useful things in their own right, because of being very lightweight and portable and having long-lasting batteries, but if you need to create significant amounts of content (like, with a word processor, or a photo editor, or a programming API) a keyboard is still indispensable. (And yes, I know some tablets have detachable keyboards, and that makes them hybrids - sort of a laptop, sort of a tablet. The keyboard is always a compromise in portability and weight.)

I have a desktop PC, a laptop (supplied by my employer), and a Kindle Fire for a tablet. I use each of them for different tasks and would not want to get rid of any of them.

This is a rather close minded view. Not everybody is going to want what you want. I have no space for tv in my life, and it just doesn't appeal to me. The argument that you can't program on a tablet means nothing to non-programmers, and a TV is the most ultimate tool for consumption over creation. I mean, tuyop wants both, but you can't just say one is an absolutely better choice.

Well the real compromise in my mind is in efficient consumption. It's true that you can find a use for a tablet, larger tablet, TV, desktop computer, laptop, smaller laptop, smartphone, handheld gaming system, iPod Classic, ebook reader, car GPS, hiking GPS, DSLR, point and shoot camera, rugged video camera, camcorder, and so on. And convergence can only mitigate so many of those uses.

I just dislike how I have to keep a concept of "enough" in the forefront of my mind for pretty much forever. I don't think I'd like it another way, it's just a nuisance personality trait I guess.

Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.
It'll stop tuyop, once you get okay with yourself. I've been kind of a poo poo to you but I've struggled with anxiety and panic disorders myself, in the same way you've struggled with your conditions. I think the two are very closely correlated. I think if you can start valuing yourself enough to deal with some of your psychological issues, you'll see this subside.

Just wanted to say though, Tuyop, your thread's been an inspiration and your comments in the Tell us stories about people who are bad with money thread really helped me make some better decisions. I traveled to Australia last summer on credit cards, and was going to repeat that mistake again going to Costa Rica (and footing the bill for a friend to come) in March, and you straight up laughed at me and I thought to myself "the dude who everyone said was mentally deficient for traveling too much just laughed at my travel plans... motherfucker." I cancelled those plans and what do you know, some emergencies struck that would have ruined me if I'd used my liquid cash for plane tickets. And though I'm not in a position to get out of debt quickly, lowering my money stress helped me complete an excellent semester of grad school which I graduate in June and hopefully land in a 60K+ a year position from. Shine on, you crazy diamond.
