Those I know who got discharged for medical reasons also got a sweet deal after they got out. The only guy who didn't was the idiot who tore his achilles riding BMX.

I'm sure you can ask your finance company for a little extra time if you explain the situation. The worst they could say is no but then again it depends on the company. Some of them are pretty shady and would slap you a late charge anyway.

There are other things I can do as well, being an injured dude in the military. Apparently - and I have to make sure this is correct when I get there - the career placement officer can approve compensation for an entire Bachelor level degree part-time with no additional obligatory service requirements. I could do my BEd while I wait - or if I get a really cushy trade, while I work - for free! The only catch is that you pay for it first, then when you pass the course, you are reimbursed. The military offers loans at 3% for "self improvement", so I was thinking of taking one of those out, paying for two or three courses a semester with it, then paying it back once I get the claim back. These claims can take like six months to process, but I've had ones go through in the same day. Is this a terrible idea seeing as how it's actually taking on more debt? I just feel like it's a terrible thing to throw away a free* 12000 dollar degree or whatever a 1 year BEd is worth. The minimum payment, whatever it is, will also probably eat into my debt repayment schedule. * Minus interest.
I think you want to look at two things here:
1. Where does that leave you career wise after you get this degree? I think the general rule of thumb is don't finance a degree for the sake of having a degree. Even if it's "free", if you have no idea what you will do with it, it's just a waste of time and interest payments.
2. Are you going to get a fat chunk of cash for your back?

2. I really don't know. People with plantar fasciitis, which is considered a "lesser" injury than a back injury, get in the vicinity of 30k payouts regularly. But like everything else right now, I don't know. There's a huge assessment process that I have to go through before I get any kind of payout. I'm confident that I have a case, but I'm also terribly unlucky so who knows.
Well looking around the Canadian forces websites it seems you can get a pretty sweet deal in the best case scenario. I know people who had similar stories in the US military and got pretty good deal. It's not like you were doing wheelies on a motorcycle and messed up your back. You were hurt at work and I'd expected you to be compensated as such. This may be a blessing in disguise if you can pay off like half of your debt and get a degree that enables you to move into another career doing something you want to do.

I had an MRI on the third (kind of funny, I had to get a face X-ray because they were worried about metal in my head from one time a machine gun malfunctioned and broke my nose) so I'll see if that sheds any light on possible treatment.

Thanks for asking though.

Fine, the vacations I have taken are more like 200 dollars from a savings account generated for that purpose to drive to Montreal, sleep in my car, and see my girlfriend for four days once every two or three months rather than 2100 dollars from a credit card to fly to Istanbul, stay in hostels, and sightsee. I don't care what you guys say, I'm not just going to live like a monk and stop doing any little thing that costs money so that I can repent for my evil spending habits. What I will do is save for the things I want to do, then do them.
I don't think anyone is saying you can't do that. I think they're just trying to remind you that it's still a vacation. This pattern of rationalizing is something often seen when we confront our bad habits, they're just trying to help.

The job thing has gotten a lot less urgent. I'm going on permanent medical category. Ottawa has to evaluate whether I can serve in some other capacity for a period of time, or whether I should be released with full benefits (two years 70% salary and unlimited reeducation, medical care forever), or be released with partial benefits (medical care forever and some variation of full benefits above). Going on permanent category also involves a terminal posting, I'll probably go be a company 2IC at a school in Borden, where the girlfriend is posted. I'll get all my furniture back as well, and all the travel claims and posting bonuses that go into that. Either way I won't be unemployed anytime soon, think like 12-18 months, with lots of notice and six months of retirement/reeducation leave. At my normal rate of savings and repayment and selling the car next April, I could probably end up out of the army with <25k debt and a BEd and Masters of Education.
Well this is a lot better than living in the wilderness next to the base.
