To be fair, there's been three side stories (one interactive) since the last update, which were all pretty fun. I'd actually quite like more of them, because they were a good way for Kaz to stretch his legs a bit and get away from the main story.

This does of course still just mean that he should update his loving comic, especially considering the ten month gap between Dodger and the Asotil one.

Edit: Or ask for guest comics, or do some sketches. Anything except nothing, partly for content and partly to keep reminding yourself that you have a comic people against all odds still want to read.

Perhaps instead of spending the sum total of your time on gimmicky Adobe Flash poo poo or Unity poo poo or whatever the hell it is you are doing, you could instead plan those things very far ahead of where you are at in the comic and continue to make normal updates so when they drop they're a pleasant surprise and not a moment in which the reader thanks the loving Creator that you've finished that poo poo.

Trick is though would any of you personally give two shits if the comic was bad? See the trick is what little we have is ludicrously good and it makes the waiting and loving around a lot more agonizing since a lot of these massive set piece things we're presented are pretty much over trivial things storywise and it leaves readers sitting there going 'god drat imagine if this plot had arrived at a point before blowing this load'

Yeah basically, I enjoyed what I read, or I wouldn't care. And every time I hit an interactive bit I basically skipped it and that was fine with me.

I agree, I always skip the walkarounds and interactive games when possible. I infinitely prefer the updates that are text and images, because they are faster to read through and I don't have to go through them over and over to get all the details, or wait for other people to do that and report back their findings.

Kazerad, that one update with the scrolling staircase was cool; I'd rather your interface experiments were more like that and less like mini-rpgs. The story you are telling is actually interesting, you don't have to prop it up with ever more complex gimmicks.

edit: Oh, or the introduction of that entity that ruled over Nightmares, that was a neat browser-based presentation as well.

My favorite part of the story involved just slightly animated panels, four and a half years ago (aka two days ago comic time) when Sigrid stole all Katia's stuff and she became determined to get it back.

Or maybe there was something about a book?

It was a long time ago and I've become old and forgetful since then, sorry.

That's not really why he's doing it. He's said before that he doesn't give a poo poo about the comic or its readers, essentially, and the reason why he does these experiments and gimmicks is because he views it as his testing grounds to try things out to polish his professional resume and learn lessons for future projects. He has basically zero loyalty to the comic as a story. This is apparently because he's a Psychology major and is interested in marketing. Evidently he never learned that public relations are a part of marketing.

Aw, that's not entirely accurate.

I like to try things I haven't done before. Originally it was a sort of research thing, like "someday I'm going to be a real webcomic author and have to know what sort of stuff people like/dislike!", but at this point I think I just kind of enjoy it. Sometimes it leads to these situations where something turns out to be ridiculously hard and takes months and months, and I'm not going to defend it and say "well, this is actually a good business decision", because it's not. Exploring new approaches is just kind of fun, and enough of my audience seems to like the experimentation that it is sustainable.

I do feel bad when this causes massive delays, because I like updating the story, and I like when people enjoy it. However, the freedom to try out new styles and approaches is something I really enjoy, and which does not exist in most other long-running projects. Like, I can tell you for a fact that I'm never again doing something a graphically complex as this update, but I'm still glad that I had the opportunity to explore this path and realize it was a horrible idea. There's a weird sense of exploration and excitement to this kind of thing that I never really expected when I got drunk and started a webcomic. I always thought of webcomic as, like, writing a script and then painstakingly illustrating it every day for the next ten years.

Well for one it's a cute stylization of a cat lady from a popular game series.

Also Kazerad keeps buying advertising on sites where people draw porn of his comic, linking them back to his site, tacitly giving them the okay on drawing it and encouraging more.

That's funny because every single member of your audience here seems to be saying "we'd prefer you didn't experiment like that" and I'm sure plenty of disgruntled former readers would say they gave up on the comic because of the incredibly lengthy delays it has repeatedly caused.

Also common sense could easily have taught you several of these lessons. You didn't really need to try them.

Well they said "sustainable", which could mean any amount of return including zero if they consider the cost of the site and domain to be worth the benefit of experimenting

If that's all they want out of it then we're barking up the wrong tree by giving a poo poo, but I think we already knew that

What?

I just remembered something. People gave Kaz $61,000 on indiegogo for merchandise of this comic. This was one of the stretch goals.

Good thing you put that gotcha in there so you can point to it and talk about how you never promised per se you'd update more or ever again! Don't worry, I'm sure if you try to do another merch run you'll pull comparable numbers again after abandoning your comic for a year. Hope you didn't actually quit your job to live the lucrative life of a webcomic artist, gambling your salary once a year on a big merch drive.

Also I never noticed that line before comparing the previous crowdfunding project getting 8 times what he asked for, which sounds amazing until you look at it and see it was only asking for $500. "Making 8 times what I asked for" sounds a bit more impressive than "I made $4,000" I guess
