I guess more precisely, I like games that have relationship values and events. Character interaction is cool, and I like games where that is one of the main focuses. I'm actually pretty pumped to see how it plays out in Devil Survivor 2.

Oooh, welcome to SMT! The short answer to your question is, indeed, "all of them".

The longer answer is: It's pretty confusing what series is what, and what game is from what, and all. I started with Persona 4, myself, and it was a long time before I figured out what the hell was going on with the series and the basis, and the spinoffs, and.... An article that was helpful to me was Hardcore Gaming 101's Megami Tensei/Shin Megami Tensei write up on the series.

I say look around and find one you think looks interesting. If you like it, keep playing, if not, go to the next one that looks awesome. There are a ton of different kinds and styles of spinoff series, and they're quite different from each other. A lot of the games have Let's Plays, so you can always check them out, too, to see how the game plays. I've personally tried Persona 3 & 4, the MMORPG Imagine, Strange Journey, Devil Survivor, and the Raidou Kuzunoha Devil Summoners for PS2, and ended up liking them all.

So I've never played a PS2 SMT game (not persona series), which one is the best one, alternatively which one is the first one?

I'm most likely going to scour stores for it so I can play it on my computer in HD :allears:

Non-Persona SMT games on the PS2 are:
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (a.k.a. Shin Megami Tensei III)
SMT: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha 1 & 2
Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2

The main Shin Megami Tensei series consists of Shin Megami Tensei I & Shin Megami Tensei II for Super Nintendo, Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne for Playstation 2. Direct spinoffs of the main series still considered in line with it, rather than a spinoff series in their own right are Shin Megami Tensei: If...for Super Nintendo (no current English translations), and Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for Nintendo DS. Strange Journey is sort of the unofficial Shin Megami Tensei IV. From what I understand, the developers were unsure as to how it would be received, so they left the name off, just in case.

What is main and what is a spinoff and in what series is very confusing, and I think nearly everyone doesn't immediately understand at first. For your specific request, I'd personally reccommend Shin Megami Nocturne.

Through my childhood, my religion was Christianity taught from a Protestant Bible Belt perspective, so reading the Let's Plays of Shin Megami Tensei I & II, was, um, somewhat culturally jarring. Personally, I think that the reason that most of the characters revealed in Persona Ultimate are from P4 is because of the upcoming anime and most fans will be more familiar with them because of that that. The reason Aigis is included is because she seems to sell a ridiculous amount of merchandise in Japan compared to other characters. Zelenin: The Shibboleth?
Mastema: I like how you pronounce that, Zelenin.

I had the same experience. I loved Shadow Hearts, and played about halfway through SH2, and went away somewhat disappointed. It seems like the series progressed From Koudelka -> SH1 -> SH2, it got less serious, and more into wacky humor. I think if I'd played the series now, I better know how to approach it, but SH2 was disappointing at the time because SH1 was a a blend of serious and wacky, while SH2 had a major plot points somewhat like "ride Roger Bacon's fission jet across the world to escape from the Russian revolution with Princess Anastasia."

I accidentally read spoilers for the events of the True Ending of Shadow Hearts 2 and :stare:, I highly recommend looking it up if you don't know it, because it's one of the biggest mindfucks in gaming.

EDIT: But count me in as one of those that thinks that Koudelka was a masterful handling of a Western setting and plot, and Shadow Hearts 1 was an excellent balance and blend of both Eastern and Western.

Oh wait, was this not the Shadow Hearts thread? Well, I started playing Persona 2 Innocent Sin last night, and I'm really loving the 90's slang speak that's been put into the English script! Also, the game is very different than I expected...most of the description makes it seem pretty dark, but the game has started off more lighthearted and anime than I expected. I'm going to guess that means it'll start off lighthearted with an underlying darkness that will come to a head later.

I'm assuming some of the events will be during that stretch of time after the Good Ending and before the true Ending where the clock speeds forward while you scream at the game about how you could have used those months to up your social links. For instance, the date on the ski event seems to be in Januray.

That ties into my guess for the "most requested" feature, too. It's probably more things to do in the game in that big time skip at the end.

I don't mind that much if the new scenes cut into the social links, though, because I've seen a lot of those events already, and the new events look :krad. Though the obsessive compulsive completionist in me is excited to see exactly what method it will take to see everything in one playthrough.

manny kaltz

1) If you beat Strange Journey, I don't think you'll have any trouble with Persona 4. P4 is simpler that SJ in a lot of ways (less "gently caress you" status effects, more forgiving with what persona you need for what boss, etc.). Despite what Personae you end up with, you always have a roster of party members for versatility as far as skills and strengths go. In storyline boss fights, the best thing to remember is that the best thing the MC's Personae can do are best buffs and debuffs.

Also, one other thing about the ending writing in Persona 4:
DISCLAIMER: The writing in the later parts of Persona 4 Pretty much from Naoto's dungeon to the end IS a giant clusterfuck that really could have used a rewrite, but I don't think that flaw is so bad as it ruins the game to anything below one of the Best Games Ever. :colbert:

But one thing about some of the near-to-end reveals that I know disappointed a lot of people but I actually really liked was Adachi's revealed motivation for why he committed the murders and strung the team along. I think he really felt like a "real" serial killer. He was a combination of self-absorbed, frustrated, high opinion of self and low opinion of others, and personality that lacks any or enough empathy/understanding of other people..

From a storyline perspective, it has a terrible payoff; but from somewhat of a believabilty perspective, Adachi feels like a "real" serial killer with a "real" motivation. I've found that in real life, the explanations that killers give are somewhat understandable when you know the factors, but very, very unsatisfying.

All right! Made it to day 4.
(Midori, all of your fight events are so HARD.)

I've been really pleasantly surprised by how deep the game is willing to go when it comes to characters and storylines. The anime style and teenage protagonists had me expecting this would be a game that would stop at that level, but I've found that as the game goes on, the deeper the observations and predictions of human behavior go. Some of the events and reveals have had me audibly reacting.

I initially passed Devil Survivor up to try other games in the SMT franchise, but decided to give it a chance when I read someone's description of how well-done the time management system goes. I'm really glad I did, as I'm enjoying the game very much, much more than I expected I would!

Hilarious because, "you did what with what? And mixed it with what?" And fascinating because it comes from a a very different viewpoint that reminds me that the viewpoint I learned from is just one interpretation of the same myths and stories.
