The preorder bonus for the English version of Persona 4: the Golden has been announced:

Kinda meh. I don't have a Vita, and don't plan to own one by fall, so I'm not sure I'd buy it just for the preorder bonus. Now, if someone was buying and wanted to sell it separately, maybe...

The email goes out of it's way to imply that SUPPLIES ARE LIMITED AND WON'T LAST, which I'm inclined to doubt after the hyperbole they gave for the Catherine bonus (every order of the super duper deluxe version is made to order and won't last! Yet somehow the overstock will go on sale on Amazon 2 months later!)

60+ posts and you can be assured discussion about Aigis and the end of her social link are in there somewhere.

I have a pet theory that The Answer was made for vocal fans who wished that Persona was more like the mainline SMT games, and the developers responded by making it like SMT I & II.

Boiling an entire game down to JUST persona 3 dungeons is too much, I say this as someone who really enjoyed Strange Journey, so it's not like I auto hate dungeon crawling.

Agreed, dungeon crawling in Strange Journey was done fantastically. I'm the kind of person who generally tolerates dungeon crawling segments in games as long as they don't get excessive, but I can't get enough of the "grinding" in SJ!

Persona 3 had a genuinely interesting concept for it's dungeon, so I gave the more annoying aspects a pass. But by the last block, it began to wear thin and I could not wait for it to be over. Funnily enough, I played through Persona 4 and Persona 3 around the same time, and back then I found Persona 3's one dungeon to be much more tolerable than the variable dungeons in Persona 4.

What P4 needed was an ending just like Clue's. That would've fixed everything.

This is the best post.

Now to add some more to this series of CIA-classified posts!

IIRC, Dojima being the originally intended killer was mentioned in the art book, or maybe the fanbook, next to some concept art, but as I don't have it with me, I can't fact check that.

Now, I agree with the sentiment that the reveal of Adachi being the killer could have been handled a bit better storywise. I would argue that Adachi as a character is not written badly, as he is very obviously a sociopath. A very significant aspect of people with sociopathic personalities is that they view themselves as incredibly superior to the people around them, and derive joy in "faking" being normal while secretly sabotaging those around them. It's not unheard of for a sociopathic killer to have secretly have committed murders unbeknownst to even those closest to them, so I'm willing to give Atlus a pass on that.

Unfortunately, like a lot of the Persona 4 late-game revelations, it's a good concept on paper and when analyzed, but in execution it's clumsy.

Really, Persona 4 is a super enjoyable game despite some of the plot weaknesses, but I've often wondered how much better its story might have been if the development team had more than an 18-month development cycle from concept to finish.

Ravana posted:

It's a game about murder. It should be uncomfortable. Certainly that's how the NPCs treat it (Adachi vomiting in the beginning, the entire Hanged Man line, etc.), but that never really comes across to the players ourselves. I think the original killer would have done a much better job of making the player feel the same way the characters do.

Actually, the, "YAAAAAY! Let's catch a serial killer!" :neckbeard:" dichotomy was something that actually really worked for me as the viewer seeing that one of the core themes of the game is how truth is reflected in the media. The game is both very bright and exciting, but underneath are things that are dark and nauseating. On news media in real life, there's no block of stories just for the dark stuff, it's all mixed together, switching from say, a murder to the weather. And in between are entertaining commercials. Adachi as the killer works in the regard that he is both emotionally distant and emotionally close, rather like the way media makes you feel.

If you think about it, maybe Atlus did us all a service by writing that reveal the way they did. Just think of all the horrible fanwork that could have come from the concept of The protagonist's family adopting Nanako and the MC grooming her to become his girlfriend. :gonk:

:stare:
According to the Atlus USA Facebook page the Solid Gold Edition of Persona 4 Golden is sold out and not taking preorders at "Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, EBGames.ca, as well as the physical GameStop stores." The only place it's left is "GameStop.com and EBGames.com".

I'm probably playing right into Atlus's hands, but I ended up reserving a copy from Gamestop.com when I read this. At least reserving is free. If it really is scarce, and I end up not liking the swag, I can sell it pretty new to someone who might want to pay more, which would end up paying for a copy of P4G when I actually, you know, plan to own a Vita.

If you order onine at Gamestop or Amazon, you're not charged the price of the game until it ships. I guess you were declined because of funds. :(

Seems like the Persona 4 Solid Gold Premium Edition craziness is not stopping...

People are selling their preorders on Amazon for $200, and on ebay there are completed listings where the preorders were sold for $149, $109, and $99.

The game's still available at Gamestop at http://www.gamestop.com/ps-vita/games/persona-4-golden-solid-gold-premium-edition/104551 for $69.99 (plus tax and shipping).

I discovered that if you use the code SAVER in the cart right before checkout, you get free Value Shipping (5-10 business days for transit & 2 business days for processing) so I ended up canceling my previous order and making a new one for the free shipping bonus. I thought I'd post this information for you guys!

Since Amazon let me put 999 copies in my cart, I'm assuming it's a fire sale.

I'm half expecting my Solid Gold order to be cancelled. Think about it: Amazon is sold out and Gamestop is still taking orders. I wonder if their system is even setup to handle limited quantity preorders.

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned about that too. Though Atlus's Facebook page said that they had stopped taking preorders in the physical Gamestop stores, but not online. Sometimes Gamestop is the only place where you can get preorder bonuses, and my suspicion is that they pay well for exclusivity. They just might have had more copies paid for in reserve, or maybe most online customers would rather order from Amazon first, as Amazon offer free shipping and no tax for non-California states.

Hey, I just started playing Persona 5 last week. I've got two questions. I've seen in passing that there seems to be a Normal End and a True Ending like in Persona 5. On a scale of Persona 3 "Do you want the bad end No/Yes, I'm stupid" to Persona 4 "Multiple choice questions you must answer exactly how the developer intended, and then run around and event hunt, what is this, some kind of 90's-era PC game?", how much should I be worried about looking up how to get the good and true endings in Persona 5? I'm keeping save files at the start of the month just in case.
Also, how straightforward is making a social link your character's lover in this game? Is it a simple Yes/No, or are there any characters that have specific answers you have to give in Confidant events, like Naoto in 4 and Akihiko in P3P? Thanks.

Ehhhhhhh, well, when I've ever read interviewers about that and if Persona would ever have anything like that again in the series, (I think there was one in the Persona 4 guide book and I forget where else, some game review site like Kotaku or Siliconera), the only reason they give is "that (route with Jun) was put there Japanese girls. We were testing how our female fans would react".

Basically, never look into anything into a Japanese game with social aspects in the gameplay, because there is always more and it always worse.

I guess I should have written more to specify that I was half joking; I just assumed that being in the MT thread provided enough context. If it helps, I bought a PS4 just for Persona 5, have 60 hours on my save file, and I consider it to be a worth every penny.
However, it is true that the more you understand Japanese, the more :stare: cultural-isms you run across, like design notes like "I put more bare leg in this picture of the 14-year-old here because this CG is supposed to be a reward" or Normal Mode being named "Boy Mode" and Easy Mode being named "Girl Mode".

TurnipFritter posted:

These things aren't mutually exclusive, Tatsuya and Jun's relationship could have been specifically to pander to fangirls and still be a more progressive depiction of gay people than anything else in the series.

True, that's a good point, and I didn't think of it that way. (Or rather, maybe it was just harder to see that through my saltiness.)

Also, today I actually applied something that I learned in Persona 5. I just opened the November dungeon in Persona 5 and holy poo poo, I am amazed at how well the game has come into it's plot and it's tone, as well as how timely and dark the issues it deals with. There's also been a surprising amount of maturity and exploration of moral ambiguity, surprising myself at my old age of 32, far surpassing what I would ever expect at a JRPG aimed at a teenage audience.
Honestly, I was feeling a really low point after the Beach Trip at the end of August, because the plot seemed to be going on a crazy unsustainable incline, what with your group going from virtually unknown to being internationally famous and almost universally lauded, especially while everyone in the party was being so loving stupid about keeping their identities hidden. Including my own character, who accidentally revealed himself to his teacher. Who is also his maid.
At that point, I even kept writing and deleting an effortpost on this thread because my TV was failing, and I was really wondering if the plot was "going to be that stupid" for the rest of the game, should I just not get a new TV for a while, sell off my PS4 and game, and read a Let's Play for the rest of the plot. I'm glad I decided to give it another chance.
10/10 would become amazed despite being jaded, anime could almost justify a teacher who is also your maid AND make you slowly horrifyingly put the pieces together that Hey wait...if a meticulously observant person's palace would have a lot of the surrounding area look like real life, and the opening has you going through what looks like more of a real-world casino than a palace with shadows...Oh. Oh my.

I dearly love the plot and characters of Persona 3. It has it's flaws, but they're often there in a delightful cult classic kind of way.
The most important thing to know about P3P is that the female route has a Social Link with the dog.

I played through Devil Survivor 1 on the DS, and rented DS2 on the DS but never finished it. I loved Devil Survivor 1 A LOT, and thought DS2 was batshit insane but in kind of a fun way.
