How the hell is that festival an actual thing? That line up is offensively good - I am literally offended that so many great bands can play at one location, as it is terribly unfair to every other location. Going.

I was ambivalent about the first two Sparta records but Threes is an underrated gem. I thoroughly enjoyed Sleepercar too and Jim's solo EP wasn't half bad either. I wonder if this is a one-off tour or if they're going to record a new record. I hope they're back for good but I cannot imagine Omar sharing songwriting duties with anyone after he's been the boss for so long.

I thought the band lost its way when Jon Theodore left, he drummed for TMV originally up until Amputechture. I don't know what it is, but his style and stilted accents really gave the music a lot of ground. I thought Bedlam was cool was too clean-sounding and the drummer, despite being technically incredible, was just too clinician-sounding to me, he overplayed throughout that whole record. Octahedron sucks. I miss Jon Theodore.

Octahedron sucks. Its funny because I feel very similar to that - the band lost all of its ambient flow right around the departure of Jon Theodore. If you look at the segways and interludes between songs on Deloused and Frances, and then point to Octahedron and Bedlam, its easy to see that the first things to go when TMV was in budget-mode was the polish. I'm really pumped to see how the new drummer sounds on LP6.

I thought Bedlam was cool was too clean-sounding and the drummer, despite being technically incredible, was just too clinician-sounding to me, he overplayed throughout that whole record. Octahedron sucks. I'm the exact same on this as well. Theodore had a way of being incredibly tight as a drummer and playing some amazing fills without ever taking over the band the way Pridgen did. I could never get into Amputechture and liked Bedlam much more, but it really just added to over-indulgent wank people expected the band to have. Theodore's project with Zach de la Rocha, One Day as a Lion, is also good because of his drumming. The budget sound of them is really interesting to see how far they progressed. It's also loving awesome.

It's interesting that Cedric describes the next album as being "future punk", because if you ask me they were never more "future punk" than this performance right here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIFFZLzhpso They still had that ATDI psychotic energy going on.

I take it back, THIS performance from the same show is basically 100% psychotic energy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7bHfBtIRwY&feature=related Seriously I can't believe how much better they used to be with that specific, stripped-down lineup. Pridgen\vampire-wizard-cedric-era live performances pale in comparison. I mean, the sound quality in these videos is horrible, but you can still tell that was an amazing show to be at.

Relayer posted:I take it back, THIS performance from the same show is basically 100% psychotic energy: I also get the idea they'd be a lot more comfortable in really small venues. I've seen them at a couple in Atlanta (the Tabernacle, Variety Playhouse) but they seem far too big to get that kind of energy at. Put them in a basement (such as The CW's Vinyl) and who knows how they would react.

The only time I've seen them was at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA which is a pretty large venue, and it was an amazing show. This was right after Frances came out.

I saw them at their first Nashville show, touring behind Octahedron, and while it was cool that they played a wide selection from every album, it was pretty apparent they were not totally vibing. And if I'm not mistaken one or two shows later was when they fired Pridgen, so my reading on the atmosphere was unfortunately too correct.

I saw them at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit right after De-Loused, it was mind blowing. I never saw them after that because I wasn't big on Frances or any of their other albums.
