Yeesh, it's like they're actively trying to alienate the people who use the browser the most heavily.

So are any good Firefox alternatives starting to crop up yet, or are we gonna have to wait for the Firefocalypse to see that kind of stuff? Looking more and more likely I'm going to have to bite the bullet and just start tolerating Chrome once half the stuff I use Firefox for gets axed :smith:

gently caress it, I've been using Firefox since it was called Firebird 0.7 or whatever and I don't like any other browser so I guess I'm going down with the ship. :saddowns:

Until then, are there any replacements for extensions that bring back the addon bar (like Add-on Bar Restored and New Addon Bar) that will still work come November or is that one of those things like Classic Theme Restorer that is just done?

Oh, and Quick Content Search. That's the other one I could use a replacement for.

Yeah I'm kinda in the same boat. Plus, as much as I'm going to miss some of the addons that will break instantly, there are still a ton of features about the browser itself that are vastly better than the alternatives. It'll just suck for a while waiting to find new remakes of old addons when possible.

Probably stupid question, but if I'm on 54 right now, do I just need to change the update channel to ESR or reinstall from ESR 52?

I followed the instructions here: https://mike.kaply.com/2017/02/02/plugin-support-in-firefox-52/

And my About Firefox shows I'm on the "esr" channel as expected, so it looks like that worked, though it's still 54.0. Should I uninstall (but keep the profile), then reinstall 52 ESR instead?

I mostly am doing this to preserve some extensions I use heavily at work. My home computer can probably tolerate the upheaval once it goes down.

[Edit] Yep, that's all you do. Uninstall and then reinstall ESR.

Anyone who switched to 52 ESR had it go and update to 55 without your knowledge or consent? Appears I'm not the only one:

...and there are even more threads from all sorts of older versions with people having this same problem.

I thought being on ESR meant I'd get updates automatically, but only ESR updates. Instead, it's switching me over to the release channel, though not immediately. The second time I reinstalled, I managed to stay on ESR for a few browser restarts, but this morning it went and updated to 55 again when I had to restart once more.

Gonna try some of these suggestions and see if I can get it to gently caress off. Oddly, 52 ESR on my Windows machine has been playing nice -- it's my OSX install on my work machine that refuses to stay down. Super annoying since 55 breaks some extensions I rely on heavily for work.

For fucks sake, it went and did it again after a crash, even after I did everything possible to make sure it would not and was UNABLE to do so. gently caress I hate this bullshit, I think I'm going to just give up and switch to Chrome for my work machine at this point.

Do they really look at their plummeting userbase, read posts like this, and then say "everythings fine, we are smart and good at designing things!"?

I doubt they actually are listening to user feedback, just like every other big software company these days.

I ended up switching to Chrome for my work machine, and it's lightyears ahead in terms of jank-free experience. I also realized while looking for alternatives that not only could I still do everything I used Firefox to do with similar enough extensions to not be a pain, but about a quarter of the extensions I had installed in Firefox were solely there to unbreak stupid design decisions over the years :v:

So, yeah, in less than a day I was acclimated to Chrome. Haven't touched my home Firefox install because I'm lazy and hate doing this kind of poo poo unless I have to, but if it goes and updates itself to 55 one day out of the blue then that's it for me. Oh well!

What stupid design decisions are these that aren't also in Chrome? I thought that was the common complaint with Firefox's design, that it was copying chrome.

Indeed, and it's not that Chrome doesn't have its own problems like lack of UI flexibility. It's that if Firefox is going to take away its key feature -- flexibility -- then what's the point of using it anymore when a more stable, better-supported, and faster browser can do the same things?

Forget blocklists, that poo poo should be classed as malware. No loving way I'm letting some rear end in a top hat steal my electricity to mine internet pennies.

I've got SomethingAwful fixes installed in my FF and it gives me full breadcrumbs. I think it does a fair few other things as well.

I'm not sure if it's officially maintained anywhere, but here's the code from my install:

Impossible with WebExtensions. Unless you use Tree Style Tab and install another addon that enables wheel scrolling in TST itself, and not the actual tab bar.

....wow. That is just absurd.

Looks like an auto hotkey script will be needed for when I eventually move off of ESR if even Chrome can't do that. Unless they got rid of tab switch hotkeys as well?

I'm a new FF convert from Chrome -- how do I apply this userscript to FF?

I've been pretty impressed with the speed of FF 57. It reminds me of old Opera 12, though no browser has been nearly as customizable since.

You'd need Greasemonkey or a similar userscript loading extension, then just use the extension to write a new script, paste the code, name and save it, then enable it, and that should do the trick!
