I would add Ringo Deathstarr, No Joy and A Place to Bury Strangers. I kinda want to include Jesu but that was a bit earlier.

It's a shame they haven't put out anything I've really liked in over a decade :smith: Hurry Up, We're Dreaming was the last one of theirs I loved.

This rules. Love the sound. But as a retrogaming enthusiast, I hope those CRTs were irreparable before they smashed them. :gonk:

Unfortunately, the album it's from isn't on Bandcamp so if I wanted to buy it I'd have to import it from Japan.

There's a lot of overlap between the two, in general. Hence why this thread combines them.

I don't have a PhD in mbv but I'd say it's more Dream Pop. But honestly, what matters more is how much you like it. For what it's worth, I watched all 4 of the music videos they have and they've got a cool thing going. I especially liked Pistachio Boy and Fall. Thanks for the recommendation.

Curve was my gateway drug into this kind of thing, ironically with a song that isn't 'gazy at all (Missing Link). saw the video on MTV and bought the record next chance i got. had to learn everything about them, read some article that said they were "shoegaze" and wtf is that. let's find out.

they're putting out a comp of all their Anxious Records stuff later this month. nothing new if you're a completist but maybe a good way to start.

My entry to dream pop was last year via Broadcast. Found lots more stuff I liked but nothing that hit the Broadcast receptors all that much until I came across Movietone and Lake Ruth. Search says those have never come up in the thread so check them out (Day and Night and Birds of America would be good starts) but alternatively if you do know those and they jog some recommendations loose I'm all ears.

** Pram

** Stereolab (their first 7"s came out on the Lab's own label)

** The United States of America (old '60s band but waaaaaaay ahead of their time)

** Melody's Echo Chamber

Good call on Movietone, very much in line with Broadcast. Also look up Children of Alice, it's Broadcast and the Focus Group minus Trish.

Beavis & Butt-head would greatly approve of that video.

I also like the stark contrast between tranquil nature and wanton human destruction.

The song is kinda whatever, though, lol. Not really my thing.

The 3CD re-issue of Swervedriver's 99th Dream came out a week or so back. I enjoy that Swervedriver got a nice renaissance in the 2010s (saw them live in Madison for the I Wasn't Born to Lose You tour) and I always had a soft spot for 99th Dream. Swervedriver were a harder sell then a lot of the dreampop/shoegaze acts of the time because they were not afraid to get heavy and aggressive (see also Catherine Wheel.) Also getting ratfucked by their labels (Creation dropped them a week alter putting out their 3rd LP, Geffen picked them up and they lost the contract when their A&R person got shitcanned, the tiny label that picked them up afterward in the US folded) did not do them favors. But I'm most of way through the live disc which was recorded at the Mercury Lounge, and for a non-soundboard audience tape, it sounds fantastic. Cover is kinda rear end, though.

I saw that they're playing DC with Airiel in June. Two of my favorite shoegaze bands in the same show. I need to find a way to attend.

Two collections of demos coming this year from Broadcast! The first, May 3, is material that would've become their next LP; then in September, another compiled from older demos. Youtubes of a song from each embedded in the above link.
