Really new to the term "shoegaze" although I've heard of a couple of these bands. Would y'all lump Rubber by Yuck into this? It's what people described the song to me as and it was the first time I heard of shoegazing.

I love that song. I'd say it's pretty shoegazey, as is some of the rest of that album, though it could as easily be described as noise rock/pop probably.

While I love My Bloody Valentine and Pale Saints (I pressed the repeat button to "Featherframe" so many times), another band that I really love from the shoegaze/dream pop genre is Lush. Their albums Gala, Spooky, and Split had some really enchanting melodies. Their last album, Lovelife, went towards the traditional conventions of where brit pop stood at the time rather than the dreamy/shoegaze of their prime (that's not to say that I didn't enjoy songs like "Ladykillers", but it was a bit jarring compared to the aforementioned works and I could not get into the album as a whole as much). The group split up not long after the drummer hung himself in 1996 (same year Lovelife was released), but their music still stands the test of time in my opinion, and hopefully in others as well.

Chiming in here on the Lush love, by far my favorite band. Concurring on Lovelife being not wholly representative of the sound for most of their career, which makes it ironic that it's the most popular of their albums. A great band, though, and Gala is a guaranteed listen for shoegazer fans everywhere. To contribute to the thread, a couple bands that I think might be worth adding here are Melody's Echo Chamber. Melody's Echo Chamber is a joint project from the guitarist of Tame Impala and a French singer that I couldn't find anything else about, so the psychadelia's there, but it has some dream pop flavor too. Not sure how I missed this thread for so long. This has been my favourite genre since I heard Only Shallow late on the radio one night and had a religious experience. I love everything they've put out, but I feel like Split strikes a perfect balance between their earlier noisy sound and the later pop-sounding stuff. The album has such a great flow, too -- whoever ordered the tracks is a genius, because "Light from a Dead Star" is an excellent set-up for the noisier middle tracks, and "When I Die" is the perfect ending. "Desire Lines" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded (the instrumental build-up starting around 3:20 is incredible): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9tcEuUWuhc I've never found a band that sounds quite the same. A few of the tracks from Film School's "Fission" album, and short-lived 90's band Dreamscape (not to be confused with the kind of terrible new-age band of the same name) come the closest.

I don't think liking Split the most is a terribly controversial opinion. While it's certainly not Lush, Miki Berenyi recently sang on a few tracks from the Seinking Ships album "Museum Quality Capture". (Spotify link) Judging by the interviews I've read with the surviving members of Lush, they're not exactly opposed to a reunion (at least to play a few shows, if not an album), -- they haven't gotten the right offer yet. Coachella has approached them a few times but wasn't willing to pay what it would cost them to drop everything, meet up, rehearse, and play a show. Maybe someday. I was sure I'd never get to see the Pixies play live, but then one day there I was in the front row with Joey Santiago's guitar almost literally in my face while he improvised the "Vamos" solo. Seeing Lush back together for a few shows seems a lot less far-fetched.

Following on from Beautiful Noise news, there are a couple of other documentaries worth checking out- Anyone Can Play Guitar about the '90s Oxford scene (so Ride, Swervedriver) and Upside Down - The Creation Records Story. Alan McGee does come across as a bit of a self-important twat but there's no denying having the lion's share of essential acts of the genre was down to more than just luck. One gets the feeling with the way the label seemed to be run it was a miracle it lasted as long and was able to release as much as it did! (Too bad Adorable didn't even get a single mention in the entire doco though)

It's sad that I never got into Shoegaze in the 90s as that type music would have spoken volumes to me in the middle of all the problems I was battling. There's a feeling of "oh man, I missed out" when I look at this stuff now. So many of the bands I could have been into are well past their prime or broken up. It's hard for me to say though - I probably would have dismissed a lot of it without thinking, and probably did. Maybe I can enjoy it more now as I'm more in touch with myself than I was back then. In any case, I'm definitely enjoying the present decade - I'd say this decade, only three years in, musically feels like it was made for me. There's a lot of bands making music that is 'the kind of music I'd want to make if I were a musician' these days that appeal almost directly to my sensibilities. Indeed, and Against Perfection is surely the link between shoegaze and britpop- combining the sound of the former with the attitude of the latter. Their second (and last) album I would describe as more studied and mature, but still excellent and well worth tracking down.

Sunshine Smile still sounds amazingly fresh and is a cracking pop song. Great live too, caught them a few times on that tour they did supporting Curve. Pete from Adorable is about to release an album with Terry Bickers from House Of Love / Levitation too. It's dead good.

They're not exactly shoegaze (more Pink Floyd mixed with a healthy dose of Sabbath), but they will still melt faces. They played a show up last night in Houston and it was a hell of a thing.
