I didn't realise Phil King torpedoed the Lush reunion. Wonder what was up with that.

I got the impression he felt really unhappy with someone other than Chris Acland sitting behind him. I can't honestly blame him.

You two both know what's up. I lovvvvvve Doppelganger by Curve though. And Coming Up Roses.

The best Curve album is Come Clean and the best track on it is Cotton Candy, but you're welcome to disagree.

Also the best track with Toni Halliday on it is this:

I think it's got heavy influences from the Cocteaus and also Dead Can Dance.

Listened to the first track. If the quality keeps up I don't think I'll have too much stress listening to the others.

I was surprised to see an FB update from Dean implying Curve is still an ongoing concern, just that Toni is hard to book these days.

Took a look out of curiosity and it didn't imply that. He actually says that he's going to ask Toni if she's changed her mind (about her quitting in 2005).

Most bands pretty much do consider themselves to be in existence as long as all the members are still alive, though. Laika have been on recording hiatus since 2003 (with an album incomplete) and still occasionally update their website.

I'd put it top 10 all time all genres. The ending is a little weak, but not so bad that you'd complain.

Felt was its own unique thing, that particular record sounds dream poppy because it was produced by Robin Guthrie. but everything they put out is worth listening to, one of the "shoulda been huge but wasn't" bands.

Felt was one of those niche bands that briefly stepped outside their niche to make a song with broader appeal, but couldn't add the new audience to their regulars. Canonical examples are Pepper by the Butthole Surfers - that song was everywhere for a while - and Sparks Are Gonna Fly by the Catherine Wheel.

I have that cd set and if it wasn't in storage i'd check, but i'm pretty sure the cds were just reissues.

They do appear to be reissues. All five albums come with B-sides and remixes, though - it's the Complete Lush excluding only the EP from the brief reformation.

Haven't heard these two in decades. I got the single in a batch of five random remainders in the early 90s and it was the highlight; certainly the only other one I remember now was Hokey Karaoke by Star Turn on 45 Pints, mainly because it was ridiculous.

It's pimpin' time again. Thea Gilmore, ILOS/shoegaze/folk artist of some repute, has two new albums out this week: The Emancipation of Eva Grey and Afterlight. Much to her great surprise, both of them are bordering on entry to the UK Top 40 album chart. She's especially surprised by Emancipation being there, because a) it's a jazz album rather than her usual fare and b) it's only available from her own website. These albums are her first new releases since she separated from her husband, who had been her producer since she was 16 and hey, also turns out to have been a massive control freak. :( So it's very important to her to be successful in her own right.

Anyway: if anyone should choose to buy either or both albums by Thursday they'll push up the sales for this week. So here's a couple of cuts from Afterlight for you to see if you're willing to help out.

24 Hour Party People is mostly about Tony Wilson and Factory Records. It’s a fun movie though, and just a passing knowledge of Joy Division and the Mondays is more than you need maybe.

Does the McGee movie feature JAMC or even have a guy playing Kevin Shields? Any cameos from real artists? The Factory movie had cameos from Mani from the Stone Roses, real Shaun Ryder, and I THINK Mark E. Smith.

Carl Barat, Brix Smith, and probably some other musos cameo. A complete unknown plays Kevin Shields, and Bobby Gillespie and the Reids are cast from J&MC.

E: actors are cast as them, for clarity.

I have to feel for Slowdive, the QMU in Glasgow is one of the worst venues I've ever been to. I saw Weyes Blood there on the last tour and they very nearly managed to make Natalie Mering sound bad.

Spooky and Split are instant purcahses for sure, but I need to give Lovelife another spin. That "Ladykiller" single was fun, but I'm curious how that album holds up to its predecessors. Wasn't there a track featuring Jarvis Cocker on it as well?

Yeah, he did the male vocals on Ciao!

All the singles on Lovelife were good - the other two were 500 (Shake Baby Shake) and Single Girl - but they were also the highlights of the album. I'd say it's the weakest of the three albums and I might rank it below the comeback EP as well on a bad day.
