Not sure how I missed this thread for so long. This has been my favourite genre since I heard Only Shallow late on the radio one night and had a religious experience.

Naturally my favourites have been posted by now, though no one has posted this Lush b-side:

I thought I had something new to contribute to this thread except that...

edit: Oh yeah, Quirk posted in the ebm/industrial thread that Dean Garcia released an album with him contributing:

It's really loving fantastic. Like shoegaze developed in slightly different directions. I knew about his post-Curve band SPC ECO, but was unaware of his awesome solo stuff.

Great, can't wait for "who the gently caress are Lush?"

That's a nice change though. Last time I saw Miki surface, she was saying she was a frumpy office lady now and had no interest.

Speaking of My Bloody Valentine and Japanese shoegaze, my brother is a big fan of Japancakes' cover of Loveless.

Not easily available for streaming apparently, but here's a sample track:

edit: loving Cruyff in the Bedroom doing Vapour Trail on that compilation.

Check out Rdio! Tonnes of great shoegazer available.

Their new plans confuse the gently caress out of me, but I gather at the very least you get full access free for half a year.

In retrospect, MBV live was quite-possibly the least-lit band I've ever seen, possibly excepting Tool. I mean there WERE lights, they just kinda weren't pointed at the musicians. Unless I'm hallucinating, but that's what I remember.
When I saw MBV, the lights were insanely intense and pointed at the audience. Couldn't see poo poo as a result. The band was bathed in scorching light the entire time.

The entire show was like that for me. Almost complete sensory deprivation. Couldn't see poo poo because the lights were insanely bright, couldn't hear poo poo because the volume was obscenely loud, couldn't feel anything because everything was vibrating from the volume, couldn't taste beer because the crowd was too thick between the bar and me. All I can remember is the smell of the amps being overdriven.

It was kind of awesome.

Love them. A lot.

Swervedriver linked this today: http://www.amoeba.com/blog/2014/03/pst/the-20-best-shoegaze-albums.html

Some really odd choices, like I wouldn't put Catherine Wheel in that bracket, but basically all those albums are worth checking out if you haven't.

Man I was really blown away by that Faunts song at the end of Mass Effect. Really random and pleasant surprise. I don't remember caring for their albums that much, but I'll definitely give them another try now.
It really reminds me of this 80s cancon classic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaoQh9Ak3Rc
(Listening now, it's even more similar than I remembered.)

I don't know, this isn't really a great recommendation in line of what you just posted, but I don't believe I've seen Fjord Rowboat in this thread:

Too bad! Hope they're on good/great terms nowadays.

The show was so so so so so so so so loving good. Sounded incredible.

Wonderful :)

Though I'm mildly peeved that I had just bought their new "complete" collection!

I like that it goes back to their original "true"-shoegazery sound, but really it makes a lot of sense. The slick later power-pop stuff would have been way more expensive. Still, glad they've still got it.

I feel like everything I look for in shoegaze has already been done and nothing else seems to recapture it for me.

The Split album by Lush, Loveless by MBV, a couple of the better Alcest records and Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life. Is there anything else out there that will give me that feeling? Or did I just kinda explode the genre by listening to only the best of it? I listened to Lush and MBV in college, 20 years ago, then got into Alcest and HANL like maybe 5 years ago... so I've got a 15+ year gap in here.

The only thing I can think of otherwise is that shinywhateverstuff from russia that I was listening to a week or so ago and it did get my interest - enough to make this post and ask for more.
I really don't know what your background in it is, but I mean, from "back then" I'd put Ride - Nowhere up there with the best of it.

I like WhiteHowler's list, but for some modern stuff (more guitar oriented) I'd add:

Ringo Deathstarr. (I loving love this band). This is a slight more Lush-like track, though they do male vocals too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46XU6PGvIP4

A Place To Bury Strangers. Hard to choose a specific song. I love the Exploding Head album shitloads. Its sound is generally more Psychocandy-era JAMC or Isn't Anything MBV. This track is a bit of an exception.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXsHK40tmEM

For something quite different, I'd recommend you check out Ulrich Schnauss, who basically does electronica with shoegazer influences. This track is what got me into him, but the entire album, Goodbye, is great. And the preceding one, A Strangely Isolated Place is it's own unique special thing. Took longer to grow on me.

Dunno man ... seen them twice and all they do is gently caress with the sound booth.

(I kid of course ... the shows are god damned amazing, but they really enjoy long outro noise/pisstakes. One of them was a 45 minute NXNE or CMW set and they probably spent half an hour just loving with the sound guy haha.)
