I hadn't heard of Beliefs before reading this post, enjoying their album quite a lot, so thanks.

Ride is pretty interesting. Hadn't heard any of their stuff before, but I recognized the name from a shot of a gig flyer from Failure's 2004 documentary. Apparently they opened for Ride in LA 1990-ish, when they still used a fretless bass. This Ride album kind of reminds me of that meloncholy-ish 80's/90's style of britpop, like The Smiths or the few songs I've heard from Blur before they did the "whoo hoo" song. Very different from MBV, my only other exposure to early shoegaze. Guess I need to try some Jesus And Mary Chain next. What else would you all consider shoegaze essentials from that same time period?

Boo Radleys - Everything's Alright Forever and Giant Steps
Verve - A Storm In Heaven
Slowdive - Just For A Day and Souvlaki
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head
Lush - Spooky and Split
Kitchens Of Distinction - Death Of Cool
Spiritualized - Laser Guided Melodies and Pure Phase
Spacemen 3 - Playing With Fire
Chameleons - Strange Times
Catherine Wheel - Ferment and Chrome

A few of these might not be considered shoegaze by strict definitions of the genre and/or time period, but are at least "shoegaze adjacent" imo :)

I still dig that album, as stripped down and straightforward as it is and this is a pretty solid live cut for what is probably the closest thing to a current single he's got.

Anyone know how long he's been performing seated?

Been that way every time I've seen Spiritualized going back to 2003.

I'm not sure why I'm attempting to post right after that masterpiece of a tweet, but, Andy Bell of Ride and Oasis has a new solo record out, its very psychedelic and shoegazey and quite solid on the whole.

Solid but there are certainly so many from that period as that’s the last big gasp of guitar bands. Top 25? 50? Probably some list saying as much right?

In 2000 (maybe 2001?) I played in a gaze band that opened for Adam Franklin at the now defunct khyber in Philly. I forget if he was solo project then or just doing some old swervedriver stuff for money. Nobody saw us and I was too drunk by the time he went on to remember.

I also want to toss my hat into the rink a little with my own goon shoegaze stuff and knowing goons for the last 11 years the thread to eviscerate or be cool with. I Spent the last year thanks to this lockdown recording a load of stuff and some with a singer from a band I was in years ago. Sadly I have more time than him to record so it’s just these four with three of him present and one of me doing my best explosions without the silence. There’s more in the pipe wherein I sing but I’m like the faux Andy bell’s sister in law baby cousin and begrudgingly doing it. In true goon style I’m just brute force basement recording myself to viability on the singing “spectrum”.

For fans of going blank again era ride, verve, and smiths.

The active band that hits the original shoegaze sound sweet spot for me the most is Peel Dream Magazine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQqSPd0cuUg

bdrmm is also very good, they pull in sounds of the 80s 4AD bands, or maybe The Cure / Siouxsie

I will always listen to anything Ringo Deathstarr puts out

Also, maybe it's a bit cheating to include him, but if you haven't listened to it yet Andy Bell's solo album from a few months ago is very good

Oh, my understanding was that the version with the choir was the actual original version, but was omitted from the 1997 release because they couldn't get clearances for the Elvis lyrics, but then they did get the rights to them on the reissue and reinstated that section.

I saw them in Denver on Monday and it was killer. The songs they played from the new album that hadn't been released as singles yet were huge, and Come Together was a nice surprise, because I hadn't seen it on the previous setlists (although I was also kinda bummed that it seemed to take the place of Headin' For The Top Now, which I love).

I guess I’m the Andy Bell RSS feed itt, but he plays guitar on half of the songs of the Pye Corner Audio album that is out today, blissful ambient shoegaze/drone vibes.

quote:

“This is a departure to sunnier climes, but a departure nonetheless,” says Pye Corner Audio, aka Martin Jenkins. “It’s something that I’d been thinking about for a while. I try to tailor my work slightly differently for the various labels that I work with, and this seems to fit nicely with Sonic Cathedral’s ethos.”

Designer Marc Jones’ ultra vivid artwork consciously references the likes of LFO, Spacemen 3 and the early output of Stereolab.

“I think it mixes together many of my earliest influences,” explains Martin. “I’ve been a long-time fan of Spacemen 3 and Stereolab. Their moments of repetition and drone have always seeped into what I’ve tried to create.”
