What about groups like His Name is Alive or Pale Saints? They seem to make weird pop music that doesn't strike me as "dream pop" like Cocteau Twins or whoever but I heard of them when getting into the genre a bit more deeply? I dig it. Who else should I check out? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyD9V34AApc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ0XV1BUx9k

I found out about Sea Oleena a while ago after coming upon her browsing Bandcamp "dream pop" tags late at night. I've been really into her second EP, Sleeplessness, for weeks now. I'm less familiar with her first, self-titled release since I think her second is in general much stronger but they're both free so why not just get both and see for yourself? From her second release, I particularly like "Southbound": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMlrd1g8jcI "Untitled": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyHrDaDHF04&hd=1 and "Orion's Eyes": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOgk_mx-g1k&hd=1 And has anyone heard of Kaitlyn Ni Donovan? I came upon her album Song For 'Three Days', released on Hush in 1999, a week or so ago and was surprised I had never heard of her since, from what I can tell, she's a big name in the Portland music scene and has been since the mid-to-late-1990s now? I can't find any audio or anything from that album (or, really, anything about her as a person or musician?) unfortunately otherwise I'd link some but it's a great album. Ni Donovan I think plays violin and so it at times gets a little experimentally drone-y but nothing that would make it seem undeserving of the 'pop' part of "dream pop" or anything.

I don't find a lot of shoegaze especially memorable although I enjoy much of it when I'm listening to it if I'm in the right mood (high?). Is this an unpopular opinion, should I just stick to dream pop? Also, The Radio Dept needs to release some new material already...

glompix posted:I agree with this somewhat. MBV's stuff and maybe a handful of tracks from random bands like Airiel and No Joy are the only tracks I find myself humming. It's hard to develop hooks in shoegaze, I think. That isn't to say that shoegaze hasn't influenced and made better psych rock, dream pop, and all that other wonderfully hummable stuff. There's just a lot of material out there that sounds a lot alike and I think it's perfectly rational to put it on random and zone out a bit. It almost seems like a lot of shoegaze bands that followed MBV didn't realise or care that there were actually very strong melodies -- honest-to-goodness pop songs -- underneath and within all that guitar and synth texture. You could almost say it's something of a sensible next step from The Jesus & Mary Chain's noisy love of The Beach Boys and Phil Spector... I think that's what makes MBV seem to stand out for most people compared to a lot of their peers and followers maybe as well? Or at least that's how I see it, anyway, and I definitely appreciate the influence shoegaze has had on various styles of music -- ones I probably listen to more actually -- even if I don't listen to it very often. I don't think I can use Spotify since I'm in Canada but this thread has been very helpful all the same in finding worthwhile music. Thanks guys!

The Bilinda Butchers have a new album out in 11 days, Heaven, which'll be released on Orchid Tapes. You can pre-order it here! Two songs have been unveiled so far. The first was a while ago now, "Edo Method", and the second was released an hour ago and features Sara Psalti (whoever that is?), "Golden House". I think the first song is pretty great and sounds like a great theme to a '90s anime, haha; the second I'm not sure about yet as I've only listened to it once.
