Lush is hands-down my favorite band -- not just shoegaze/dreampop, but from any genre, ever.

I'm probably alone in thinking that Split is their best album. I love everything they've put out, but I feel like Split strikes a perfect balance between their earlier noisy sound and the later pop-sounding stuff. The album has such a great flow, too -- whoever ordered the tracks is a genius, because "Light from a Dead Star" is an excellent set-up for the noisier middle tracks, and "When I Die" is the perfect ending.

"Desire Lines" is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded (the instrumental build-up starting around 3:20 is incredible):

I've never found a band that sounds quite the same. A few of the tracks from Film School's "Fission" album, and short-lived 90's band Dreamscape (not to be confused with the kind of terrible new-age band of the same name) come the closest.

I'm 100% with you on Split. Don't get me wrong, I love Spooky, but Split is much better to me because of pretty much everything you posted. Also, it has The Invisible Man, which is probably the most outright haunting thing they ever did.

That said, Split was also where they lost me. To this day I just can't sit through Lovelife at all.

Lush was pretty much my gateway into shoegaze years ago, which has been a good and bad thing. Finding anything else that accomplishes everything they do is literally impossible, and the search for such was rather disappointing. I did find some other branches of the genre to like, though.

I don't think liking Split the most is a terribly controversial opinion. It's certainly their most polished and ambitious, and gave us their best "regular pop song":

I'm going to pretend that link points to Blackout, since you say it goes to their best "regular pop song" :colbert:

It's really good.

It's... magical :allears:

e: Dear god, the last song is almost a religious experience.

That said,

VVVV Yeah, I really wish he hadn't completely abandoned the metal of the last two albums.

We don't really have a post-metal thread, do we? I don't know where else this goes but it's shoegazy as gently caress anyway:

Lantlôs's new album is really good. If you don't know, they're a German metalgaze band or whatever you want to call it. Neige from Alcest used to sing for them, but the lead guy in the band sings now and it's all clean vocals.

Wait, wait. WHAT?

Neige sang for these guys? How have I never heard of them? Holy poo poo, I got some homework to do.

Ok, I'm into more "normal" shoegaze, although in an oddly limited way, but I'm looking for stuff there may not be a whole lot of. Basically those two Alcest albums where he threw in a bunch of metal and did growls and it was still somehow shoegaze? (Écailles de Lune, Les Voyages de L'Âme)

Is there more stuff like that out there somewhere?

e: gently caress, I killed the thread :smith:

C'mon, I don't think anyone really thinks that. I mean, the genre has changed, but it's kinda absurd to think nothing good has come of it in the last 10+ years.

I just can't get over how amazing the new Alcest is, despite having almost no metal elements whatsoever. It's such a drastic left turn from the last two albums but it's still great.

I feel like everything I look for in shoegaze has already been done and nothing else seems to recapture it for me.

The Split album by Lush, Loveless by MBV, a couple of the better Alcest records and Deathconsciousness by Have a Nice Life. Is there anything else out there that will give me that feeling? Or did I just kinda explode the genre by listening to only the best of it? I listened to Lush and MBV in college, 20 years ago, then got into Alcest and HANL like maybe 5 years ago... so I've got a 15+ year gap in here.

The only thing I can think of otherwise is that shinywhateverstuff from russia that I was listening to a week or so ago and it did get my interest - enough to make this post and ask for more.

Lush's Split is maybe my all-time favorite album, so at least for me it's hard to get to that high-water mark, but I've found other shoegaze stuff that appeals to me.

Are you looking for stuff that's similar to what you liked, or other good shoegaze-y stuff that doesn't sound the same? I haven't found much that scratches the MBV itch, but for Lush...

More similar to Lush:

Deep Cut - Real good Brit-based, girl-fronted shoegaze, obviously influenced by Lush
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTDffxWk750

Film School - Generically shoegaze-y, this particular album has some Lush-like songs
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1d7RHnZxVc

Good, doesn't sound like Lush at all:

Astreal - Singaporian shoegaze with a post-rock feel
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMhI6Y2ONqY

No Joy - Ranges from dream pop to riot grrl, insanely good
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVbGpYUbozg

And some stuff I'll probably get poo poo for lumping in with shoegaze, but it's loving great:

Devics - Mellow dream pop, but their album Buxom gets noisy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0J1Tufhsc4

Mr. Gnome - Experimental dreamy noisy what the gently caress pop, my favorite band along with Lush
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHShd5p-h9I

Thanks, some pretty good stuff here. I'll have to do some more digging around on these.

Awesome. Wish I'd have caught the tour. Hell, the last time I saw them live was when I was in high school. Miki was like, my big crush when I was 15 or so.

And yeah, Phil just up and left so there had to be something wrong. Maybe he wasn't really into the whole idea at all. I don't know.

Do you folks have any feelings to share about Silversun Pickups Widow's Weeds? I listened to it over the weekend and enjoyed it. I can hear Butch Vig's work, some of the tracks feel even more Smashing Pumpkins-y than previous SSPU albums. And I dig the pair of Neon Wound into It Doesn't Matter Why, it's anxious and high strung.

It popped up a bit in the indie rock thread, but yeah I like it. It has a different feel to it than the previous stuff, but I said the same thing about Neck of the Woods when it came out and over time it became my favorite record of theirs.

I loving love Songbirds, holy poo poo.
