I will take any opportunity possible to talk about Brian Jonestown Massacre so here go:

They released their second album in 1995, called Methodrone

It's definitely my favorite shoegaze album. It's got some standard (but great) shoegaze type stuff like this:

Wisdom - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tpWf91743js
Wasted - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIcpxAfdvrA
Everyone Says - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNIwI8iE6bY

As well as some really cool more experimental stuff like this:

Crushed - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HtRCimrNkQ
Hyperventilation - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69r4cA7EEgE

And then there's this which is just phenomenal (listen to this if none of the others):

She's Gone - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzoI0l0fRCY

Unfortunately after this album they never quite returned to the shoegaze sound; settling on a more psychedelic, space-y Rolling Stones type thing. All their stuff is great though and worth checking out.

Has anyone seen the shoegaze documentary Beautiful Noise? I've really wanted to see it since I saw initial blurbs about it when it was still in development stages a while back, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'd love to know if any shoegaze fans in this thread have seen it and what anyone's thoughts are about it.

Doc site: http://www.beautifulnoisedocumentary.com/

I watched it and its pretty good if you just wanna nerd out about shoegaze and watch all your favorite artists wax nostalgic about it I suppose.

I saw it and it's alright, but I've heard there's better documentaries out there on the same subject which is pretty easy to believe. I haven't seen them if that's true, though.

I'd certainly love to know what these are!

hi fam,

i'm looking for recommendations for bands that sound similar to galaxie 500, spacemen 3, or spiritualized. i've already listened to all of the bands and albums mentioned in the first post and am currently looking for some albums that aren't considered classics.

i'm working my way though the thread so i hope this isn't a repost somewhere.

I love spacemen 3 and especially love galaxie 500. Nothing else quite scratches the galaxie itch for me but black tambourine comes pretty close.
As to overlooked bands/albums, I'm not sure if the OP mentions asobi seksu if not this is a crime
Chapterhouse is contemporaneous with the shoegazer scene and usually regarded as something of a "me too" act but I think their album whirlpool is pretty solid and adds a unique madchester twist on shoegaze
For some lesser known contemporary stuff I'd say try out tashaki miyaki, lilys, viva voce
Also galaxie spinoff Damon & Naomi aint too bad

Just saw them live this past weekend. They were excellent!

Seeing Ride was definitely one of my favorite shows. I don't know how I feel about these sorts of bands coming back and recording new material though, neither their's nor Slowdive's new stuff really grabs me. Or J&MC's new stuff for that matter, and I absolutely adore them.

I think my favorite song of last year is "All That Heaven Allows" by Mercury Girls.

It's sort of neo-riot-grrl meets shoegaze, maybe? There's some similarity to No Joy or The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, but more... jangly, I guess.

It looks like they only have a single out, but their first LP is coming out later this year.

I dig this, thanks! Also I love this gem of a comment on the video:
