I just want to share the podcasts I listen to regularly. They've all found that sweet spot between professional good content and casual fun banter between the hosts.

Radio Free Skaro
The second biggest Doctor Who podcast. Podshock is bigger and gets invited to official con panels etc.. But I prefer RFS because they aren't shackled by a close association with the Doctor Who people and be frank and critical. They are also dyed-in-the-wool fanboys of Old Who. In lulls they'll pick a random obscure producer or writer and watch his material with him in mind. It's really quite far down the rabbit who in DW fandom and it's great! They are charming, funny and come across as pretty normal folk.

The Dice Tower
The biggest board game podcast. Two hosts both good but Tom Vassal is pretty much the meat of the show. He's been on since the beginning and is a very good reviewer. The board game hobby can get pretty splergy and he provides a reasonably sane voice on the industry. They talk everything from individual components to cons and designers to the state of the hobby. It's very consistent from the beginning (well, maybe in the 20s).

Intelligence Squared
Intellectuals debate serious matters. It doesn't talk down to you and is pretty real in terms of what the actual issue is. This is refreshing because network news is often well off the mark because of 'the narrative' blah blah blah. It *is* a debate so you do get a lot of points getting dropped but hey, this kind of thing keeps the mind sharp.

Partially Examined Life
The only philosophy podcast I can actually listen to. Seriously, everybody else seems to think they have to talk like the equivalent of a Kant text. It's cheerful but deep. The length is good (1:30 hours) and the hosts are lucid and quick.

Already known by pretty much all of you-podcasts:

This American Life
It's got a thread in RGD so I'll just give it an abstract interpretation:
Warm stories told amongst friends during supper. Cosy and like a dark hot chocolate on a cold day.

Loveline
If you've seen the thread but never bothered to click on it because we all have threads like that, refrain no more! It's extremely informative and funny. Kinda makes me weirdly nostalgic to live in small town America in the 90s. I mean, it would probably have been a bit poo poo but whatever. The best episodes are from the late 90s/early 2000s so in retrospect they all have this different-time-different-way-of-seeing-the-world vibe. Being gay was OK but most people didn't want marriage. 9/11 hadn't happened, the internet was scary, and Linkin Park were the business.

All the above podcasts are at least an hour. A long podcast is a good podcast.

Can anyone recommend a good travel/backpacking podcast? Thanks.

Would anyone happen to know of more podcasts like PEL? It doesn't necessarily have to do with Philosophy, but podcasts where people get into involved and fairly high-level debates over issues or discussions of texts? I really enjoy listening to the thinking process at work.
Yay, a fellow PEL listener ^_^

-Perfect for after dark driving.
-Oddball/underground-esque American culture.

Could we do a podcast roll call? What are you guys currently listening to? Particularly interested in the lesser known.

Stone Ape
http://www.nobleape.com/stone/
Two old friends have phone conversations about their interests. AI, consciousness, psychedelics, the model train community. They tend to repeat themselves and often speak nonsense but there is something warm and honest about their conversations. I found this podcast through trawling 90s AI webrings. I think its the most obscure podcast I listen to ever.

The Wandering Wolf Podcast
http://www.thewanderingwolfpodcast.com/
Yoni Wolf of the underground rap group Why? talks to musicians about their craft and life. Chill, deep, relaxing.

The Rob Cast
http://robbell.podbean.com/
Rob Bell is a Christian speaker/leader of an emerging movement of liberal Christianity. Friend of Oprah, bane of the older generation in the pews. I'm not a Christian but I find his 'new age'-esque approach comforting.

lol these guys are cool. Really have no idea what these guys are supposed to be talking about, but what they land on is really funny. For a pair that probably didn't put in too much time to learning ~the craft of podcasting~ beyond hitting "record", they naturally have a really nice flow and they contrast each other nicely. Really have no reason to subscribe but I did anyway. The American guy is just the right amount of grumpy haha.
I echo these sentiments. I listened to a recent episode where one guy was trying to convince the other to read some academic work on AI and they spent like half an hour arguing over I don't know something about whether he'd appriciate the author's voice/intent? And then they drifted into chatting about sex cam sites. One of them, the old dude, has apparently tried to run a cam show so he can have somebody to talk to while he does his research on philosophy.

Last year they had a series of episodes bitching about the model train podcast community and it's flaws.

Anyway, they are a nice contrast to the 'gotta be funny' of comedian pocasters. They really are just a couple of dudes living in 90s internet trying to handle their friendship. Or something. I don't know.

The best is Atheist Experience which is where christians call up saying god is real because their life changed and then the hosts explaining that doesn't count as evidence and then they all roll down the street until they hit a concrete wall where they lie until they die of thirst because its just as productive as the show.

Both the Loveline and Coast to Coast threads are dead and gone but I just want to 'podtalk' about them. I love them both so much. Its thanks to this forum years ago that I chanced upon both. NZ didn't have either. +I was a generation too young lol.
Loveline:
-the social attitudes of the hosts has definitely aged poorly. Bi erasing, trans jokes, leery Carolla. But they are still pretty drat progressive for their day.
-chemistry between adam and board certified drew is top tier. it wasn't until jah and seth that i found such a pairing.
-the show is /r/relationships twenty years earlier.
-all the 90s and early 00s bands being greased up by adam. and feeling like their wave is going to last forever. just young guys and gals on the top of the world. also ska.
-pre 9/11 ridiculousness. no bush II. no iraq. christ, no obama, no financial crisis. until the 9/11 episodes. this also stands for coast to coast am.
- its a full time capsule of teen and 20something absolute bullshit. bad relationships, stoned dudes dropping out of college, worried couples, confused kids without the internet to google. also they are all like 46 years old now lol. I'm 29. which is still so young but i'm starting to feel misty eyed for my early 20s and such. it passes so quickly.
-the ads, the promotions and the surrounding media like the prominence of mtv and network television news stations. its all so perpendicular to the cultural environment of the late 2010s.
-I'd, and other superfans (lol) would agree that adam and drews tenure was the best. late 90s, early 00s. its hard to collect raw audios pre 2001. i want to get as much as i can. especially digging back into 1995 or whenever a joined in.
-the length is perfect. one hour and twenty minutes. its just enough time to settle in to bed and drift off to sleep. or to fly from wellington to auckland. i think it influenced how long i enjoy my podcasts too. if i ever made my own it would be 1:20:00.
-it reminds me of late night talk lounge. which was a cult talkback radio show in the early 00s here in nz. bomber, sez, talking to youth about the gay, uni, strife.

Coast to Coast AM:
-its like all the good stuff that alex jones ruined by existing. the 90s was beautiful for ufos and ghosts. pre youtube. i mean, a lot of this doesn't have to be said to you guys. but its like messy audio copypasta. i'm sure there is some fin copypasta/spooky talk podcasts out there. but i have an allergy to sq___ sp___ and legal z___ and any other lovely lovely ad. i can consume bad 90s ads however. they sound all echo-ey and spooky as they are.
-art bell. oh gosh! the self indulgence of the man. the way he took Radio so seriously. it was so lovely. the HAM community. he was actually a freaking amazing interviewer too. he would guide but never interrupt. and he would say things like "now i want to go back to that" "now i want to hold you down on this. you are saying there are actual photos on the internet?" it was hardly an inquisition but its enough to help suspend judgement and just enjoy ufos. a soothing radio voice too.
-the atmosphere is pitch perfect. truckers on deserted highways. i've barreled down the #1 through desert road in winter after midnight in a crappy student car, with only trucks for company. i feel i get the vibe. hell. its raining heavily after midnight right now and i'm listening to crop circles with dr. simeon hein. whom i will never google because i don't want to know how bunk he is. i want to believe. coast to coast episodes are long as gently caress. some are 4 hours. most are at least 2. so you've got plenty of doozy time to be lulled into the atmosphere.
-the quantity. there are only so many coast to coast am shows. I've got, according to VLC, 1551:40:29 hours on my laptop. I'm sure there is a quite a bit more out there. Or maybe this is all the art bell on the internet. the show started in 1984 and my earliest shows are 1993.
-its so far removed from my life that its perfect tune in and drop out material. its not about relationships, its not about politics, its not about social justice or issues or climate change--- ok maybe that last one.
-dodo dododododo dodoodo.

anyway, thanks for giving me somewhere to write this. cheerio!

In my experience, a downloaded full copy of Audacity comes with all those effects. Maybe you have a 'lite' edition?? Otherwise, maybe downloading the .mp3 dll enables them somehow? Sorry I couldn't be further help.

Also, I've used Pocketcasts for many years. It actually low key sucks but I kind of like how lovely it is. Sometimes things start to download and then stop and you have to delete the episodes and start again. But I'm really annoyed at how they didn't enable the premium mode with the skin options for those who bought the app when you had to. Like, yeah reward those who bought the web version but I guess we just bought the app and now its free? Egh.
