What is The Bugle (iTunes, RSS)? According to The Bugle wiki:

quote:

Andy Zaltzman and John Oliver, with the help of the comedy double act Oily and Schmaltz, first created the Bugle in the 1910’s, bringing two major innovations that hampered the earlier incarnations of the audio newspaper; an audio recording technology and English. These were added to the political and social satirical pillars of the others, while continuing the Audio tradition, to create a dynamic product that could be understood by the populace as well as listened to multiple times. Unfortunately the vestiges of the old Victorian society and the Catholic-Impala alliance kept success from Oliver and Zaltzman’s hands. The world just wasn’t ready for The Bugle, and the reactionary lobbies of the Pope and Impala ensured it remained that way.

But several things happened that made it possible for the Bugle to return. Firstly John moved to New York to work on the television show, the Daily Show with Jon Stewart, a move that was destined to happen after John accidentally spelled amour the American way, armor, during his primary school days. Then came the writers strike by the WGA, which gave John a great deal of free time. Finally the Catholic-Impala anti-bugle bloc became stressed to the breaking point with the alleged Catholic incursions into the traditional Impala grazing grounds. With the opposition distracted, John and Andy revived the concept of an audio newspaper for a visual world, this time in the innovative podcast format. The rest is history.

What is The Bugle really? It's a (usually) weekly podcast by John Oliver (who you may recognize from The Daily Show) and Andy Zaltzman and distributed by TimesOnline that takes a comedic look at current events. With Andy living in the UK and John being from there as well, things do tend to have a bit more focus on things happening in the UK, although they cover plenty of international news as well as things happening in the US. The podcast is largely just John and Andy, with their producer occasionally chiming in, and the occasional segment featuring The American (which tend to be fantastic).

The podcast has a website here, but it's incredibly ugly and was thrown together basically to host a Coat of Arms contest they ran. There was a more professional albeit sparse website for the podcast that has since moved behind The Times of London's paywall. There's also The Bugle's twitter feed run by Andy.

The New York Times recently ran an article about the podcast, Comedy Podcast Inside News Corp. Feasts on a Scandal, which pointed out, perhaps unhelpfully, the comments The Bugle were saying about their parent company. In the Bugle following that article's publication, John Oliver made a statement:

quote:

Welcome to any first-time Buglers who are here because they might have read The New York Times' story on us earlier this week. Basically, the story was questioning how on Earth Andy and I were able to get away with saying the things we did about Rupert Murdoch during the phone hacking scandal without this podcast being dissolved, which is a legitimate question. I'm guessing the truth is that he was never aware of it, but now that the story's in a newspaper that I'm guessing he reads cover to cover every day, I'm thinking there's an even smaller chance of us managing to not get fired now. So thanks very much, New York Times! Your trumpeting of this podcast may well turn into bugling the Last Post. I guess what I'm saying is—to our new listeners—'Hello and goodbye!'

If you want a brief way of introducing yourself to The Bugle, there are a few "Best Of" style episodes produced somewhat recently, which are sorted chronogically and broken into 4 parts designated episodes 122a, 122b, 122g, and 122d. For anyone wondering what sort of numbering scheme that is, regular Bugle episodes get full numbers, and anything short of a full episode (ie, someone can't record that week, they're on vacation, etc) is made a sub-episode which has a numbering scheme that seems to only conform with whatever the hell they feel like naming it at the time.

For someone who might want to listen to some single bits:
John and Andy take time to talk with The American about health care reform and jet-skis Part 1 Part 2
John and Andy talk Stupid Buildings
John and Andy discuss the release of Obama's birth certificate, birtherism, and Donald Trump
If you hate yourself: Andy's long string of 31 puns regarding Lou Reed's dog concert

And I would be remiss if I managed to post this somehow without taking a moment to say "gently caress you Chris".

Wow, I love The Bugle and somehow completely forgot it existed. I sort of stopped listening when the The Times erected their paywall. The RSS feed always gave me problems but I just added it to my Google Listen queue and it seems to be working fine.

Thanks to The Bugle, I am unable to think of Silvio Berlusconi without hearing Episode 99. "SILVIO BERLUSCONI GETTING HIT IN THE FACE NEWS NOW! Is this a beautiful dream, Andy? Have I died and gone to heaven?"

We are long overdue for another appearance by The American, though he's probably too busy scooting around on his jet ski to come into the studio.

To be fair, I share John's pain every time Andy does this. The two play off each other very well, but Andy is the definition of forced, unfunny humour.

At least to me, I mean.

I kinda agree, but at the same time, it's so forced to the point that it actually becomes funny again.

I'm basically with John on this, in that I'm sitting there laughing at it while going "Oh god, when is this going to end?" I mean, there's a reason I linked the dog pun run prefaced with "If you hate yourself".

I think the first few times Andy did it I laughed, but hundreds of episodes in now I start to find them just getting tiresome. It's not a big deal or anything, I'm certainly not going to stop listening because of it -- they're still a great duo. Their back and forth banter is amazing.

Not even all Andy-isms bother me. He CAN be funny, it's just that one particular thing he does that I find so bluntly unamusing that it colours the way I talk about him ;)

Oddly enough, I find that forced humor (and it's reaction) some of the funniest bits of the Bugle. There's nothing funnier to me than someone utterly bombing, though. Coincidentally, their Fringe stuff lately has been great for me.

Yeah, I think that's pretty much where I am. Like, I was going back and listening to some old bits after trying to dig up single bits for the top post and ran into Andy's North Korea puns. That thing is hysterical, because he's trying to make puns based off the names of North Korean cities that most people have never heard of, so after each pun he has to stop and give a quick explanation of what the hell he's talking about.

I do remember one particular episode where John just sounded like he wanted to quit and end the podcast because Andy was making puns out of the names of countries. There's no way I'd be able to find it unless I listened through each podcast, but I know that I personally tapped out when he got to United Arab Emirates - You 'n I did a rap, am I right?

That was Episode 133. Someone put it on Youtube. Here is the link.

I was trying to find the source of that when I made the OP, actually. The first time The Bugle covers that Gadaffi speech at the UN is in Episode 90 - Bring on the Crazy, Gaddafi!, but that episode has John calling in on the phone, so I know it's not from there. They talk about the speech again in Episode 91, but it's not there either.

I know the version put to music is in Episode 99 subepisode 2, the Music Spectacular, so it's clearly from something in the 90s, but I haven't sat down to relisten to that range to figure out which episode it's from.

EDIT: Hey, I found it. It's in the email section in #92, 22 minutes in. A listener later cut that up and produced the musical version you linked.

I was actually going to go back and relisten to a few of these to try to point out a couple of good old episodes, but I haven't gotten around to doing so. But, from a somewhat vague memory and looking at episode titles, I'd suggest:

Episode 13 - Sark gets democracy after 443 years
Episode 22 - Hugo Crackers From Caracas Chavez
Episode 24 - Was Stonehenge an ancient tax dodge? (featuring The Greatest Email Ever Sent)
Episode 30 - Volcano Porn
The Real Episode 55 - Shooting One's Own Leg

That last one is pretty much classic, as John and Andy have a field day with the story of Plaxico Burress shooting himself in the leg with an illegal gun that he was carrying at a nightclub in the waistband of a pair of sweatpants.

I think episode 56 (54?) is the one with Andy delivering his son. That's a story that has never gotten old to me.

It's 56 or 57. I was listening to 55 again earlier to listen to the Plaxico bit and the forecast at the end of that was whether Andy would have 1 or 2 kids next week. I kinda half-remember that they end up reusing that forecast, so I'm thinking 57, but probably one of those two.
