Episode #36: Brando Unauthorized

One of the things that Why Does It Exist? has taught me is that you can get away with a poo poo-ton of dubious legal measures if you exist somewhere in the nether regions of Hollywood. After last week’s egregious ripoff of many of Hollywood’s best-loved films, we tackle Brando Unauthorized, a biopic done without any consent from the Brando estate and with all the integrity of a dollar-store R-Patz biography. Triple-threat auteur Damian Chapa (who has also portrayed Roman Polanski, produces, directs and stars as Brando, a particularly brave move considering this lumpy fortysomething also portrays Brando at the tender age of 16 - certainly the world’s doughiest sex symbol.

As told through the eyes of Brando’s no-goodnik junkie murderer son Christian, Brando Unauthorized celebrates the great actor and innovator for everything he did that was of no particular worth: showing his rear end to Talia Shire, multiple fisticuffs and extramarital affairs, telling his dad to stick it where the sun don’t shine and various other sundry melodramatic nonsense. If Ulli Lommel somehow began directing fiction features for TMZ, it would look something like Brando Unauthorized.

Having reserved Brando Unauthorized months ago, WDIE contributor and workhorse pedant Mickey O’Narey joins us for a frank discussion of what Brando means to this world as well as a lot of gesticulating and microphone-peaking impressions of Brando. NOTE: Why Does It Exist? does not condone or condemn the usage of dubious Jersey Shore impressions.

I don't care what you say about this post, but if anyone steps on my bunion, I'll kill them!

I did it again. I didn't post here for like, months. Well, here's Anime World Order Show # 107, in which we report on the events that transpired at Otakon 2012, which we were present as both members of Press as well as Featured Panelists. Roughly 33,000 people were present this year, which introduced some new problems while alleviating some old ones. We're joined by Anime Weekend Atlanta's Director of Video Programming Darius Washington, though between his landline connection and the fact that we opted to use this episode as an experiment of using Google Hangouts instead of Skype, the audio quality is not as good as it usually is. We'll resume normal production next time, when we [finally] review the Sanrio film productions of Osamu Tezuka's Unico, which have been recently re-released on DVD. Full-color hardcover editions of the original comic will be published in the months to come.

If the 90 minutes of that weren't enough, I was on a three-hour edition of the ANNCast with fellow goon Mike Toole to also discuss Otakon for a bit. But most of the discussion is devoted to discussion of Kids on the Slope (the recently concluded series from the director of Cowboy Bebop), Lupin the Third: The Woman Named Fujiko Mine, and two hours of answering Twitter questions that were sent to us about all sorts of random topics pertaining to Japanese animation and the fans of same. The resulting message board flames appears to still be ongoing.

And if you STILL need more, while at Otakon I was a guest for a special live recording of Dave and Joel's Fast Karate for the Gentleman, in which we discussed episode one of Crying Freeman: Portrait of a Killer. They'd never seen it before; I'd reviewed the comic in 2009.

For the approval of Something Awful I submit, Dolly Shot Fan Fiction:

DSFF is a anthology tale based podcast that is released every week on Wednesday. Three writers (myself included) bring to the table a story which the other two have never ever heard of, and read it to the audience. The only catch is, the story must include a film dolly.

Most of the joke's are ones in particular film students or film lovers will get, but hopefully you will be immersed by the tales of terror, regardless of the film specific content. So if you enjoy banter, a wide breadth of terrible accents, shameless stealing of well known film plots with inclusions of really contrived film equipment mcguffins, this is for you!

Listened this week and It. Is. Fantastic. Great work guys! It's a really nice structure around a cool idea and you pace yourselves really well. None of the bits seemed to drag on at all before moving on to the next event. And the intro song is downright dope.

Only improvement I'd suggest is upgrading to some a nice mic or recording space at some point. It can get hella echoey some times and there's a bit of background fuzz (maybe try some noise removal?). It's funny enough that its very, very listenable though.

All in all, great job! I've subscribed and will give y'all a shout-out when we record next week's episode of NvP! Keep up the good work!

Anime World Order Show # 107b – Unico and The Adventures of Catgirl and Count Date Rape

To be fair, that is technically not the actual title of either of the films we're covering this episode. When the creators of Hello Kitty combine forces with the "God of Manga and Anime" Osamu Tezuka, the result is something a little more cultured. The actual film titles are The Fantastic Adventures of Unico as well as Unico in the Island of Magic.

Sanrio plus Tezuka sounds like good clean fun, but when you appoint the future director of Ninja Scroll to come up with the story ideas, the result is nightmare fuel for many a young child who happened to catch this curiosity on the Disney Channel or on video rental store shelves back in the 1980s. Now that they're on DVD it's time for a new generation to be introduced to the idea of turning people into building blocks as a cartoon baby unicorn with the same voice as Rita Repulsa from the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers spreads joy and happiness across the land.

That's where this podcast comes in.

At Best of the Best, we're looking for the positive in everything, so each week my friend Mark and myself discuss the 'Best Of' of any topic imaginable. Every episode has a theme (like "Beginnings and Endings," "Sports," or "Fired") and we talk about three Bests in that theme (like "Best Television Pilot," "Best Fake Sport" or "Best Personal Firing Story"). We try to convince each other our Best Of IS the best and the person who gets 2 out of 3 rounds wins the episode.

We're working our way toward a first to 500 wins series, meaning we should be at it for a good, oh...decade or so. And what's at stake? A delicious $25 gift card from Wendy's.

It's relatively new territory for us, but we've been at it for about six months now, with a consistent weekly recording/posting schedule. We're still learning the ropes, but if you wanted to take a listen, we'd appreciate that.

Join hard-boiled detective Harry Callahan (a rapidly aging and crotchety Clint Eastwood) and his new Asian sidekick as they solve a series of murders related to a betting pool called The Dead Pool. Along the way, enjoy early roles from Patricia Clarkson (as Harry’s reporter love interest), Liam Neeson (as an effete British director/prime suspect) and Jim Carrey (as a strung-out rock star who becomes one of the killer’s first victims). This cop movie is mired in 80s excess, and a creaky Clint Eastwood; luckily, however, we’ve got the drink and the rules to get you through it – take a listen and hear our thoughts!

We changed around some staff (the girl we had on previously was not meshing well and not happy there, so we replaced her with a much better fit), and I consider it to be the real beginning of the show. Genre: Video Games
Released: Weekly, Wednesdays
Description: This is a podcast that myself (Sky, the fat one) and my two friends (Alex and Paul) created back in March 2012. Our goal was to create a video game comedy podcast that felt like you sitting down with some buddies, a brew and just talking. We've since added more than just the podcast itself. We do weekly videos and blog updates, too! Alex and I are both ex-industry employees; both of us worked with Electronic Arts for a few years.

We break each episode into approximately three 30 minute chunks so people don't have to sit down and listen to 90 straight minutes. The first portion is almost always us commenting on the latest in gaming news. Parts 2 and 3 are devoted to general gaming topics, like how much DRM sucks, or in our very heated latest episode, PC vs. Console.

Latest Episode:
14.1: Pornal Kombat
14.2: Why are Birds so drat Scary
14.3: Duck Season, Wabbit Season

We have a couple re-occuring bits. Spotlight Games is where we talk about a (usually older) title that people may have missed. Something you should definitely go back and check out. The other bit is Tank'd Controls, where we hate on some of the worst gaming conventions. We also try to have a guest for each episode.

Anime World Order Bonus Installments

So that our feed wouldn't have weeks of nothing in it brought about by the usual writing deadlines and convention attendance, we've opted to re-cast our contributions to another podcast as bonus installments. SA Mart advertised Bounceweb is completely unable to handle the MASSIVE strain that is "making a new Wordpress post" or "having people view an XML file" since each time we update either it causes all our resource limits to be reached. This absolutely blows and I kind of want to migrate the blog over to a shared hosting that CAN handle a few hundred megs of traffic a day. Ugh.

Anime82 is a podcast run by "Regan Strongblood," who bears slight physical resemblance to Aum Shinrikyo cult founder Shoko Asahara. But instead of carrying out terrorist attacks on subway stations and creating bizarre cult cartoons, he's sent out another round of questions to be answered by other podcasters. He called it "12 Questions, Reverse Edition" which is a Canadian way of saying it's actually 21 questions. Except then he asked 22 questions. Except then several of the questions were multi-part questions and...man, gently caress it:

It took Gerald about 40 minutes to answer everything.

It took me closer to 90.

The questions are primarily about our opinions regarding fan translation and distribution of Japanese animation and comics, as well as our collections of merchandise and memorabilia. To mix things up a bit and in acknowledgment of the fact that fans of Japanese animation are the Internet's biggest pariahs this side of the bronies/furries/Homestuck fans (who also comprise a large portion of anime convention attendees), we're also asked our thoughts on US comics and cartoons. Listen as we admit on record to our callous disregard of intellectual property rights!

Today we have the latest MTG podcast, with the one below it we have interview a sfx and makeup artist who has worked on movies like the latest Rob Zombie Halloween films (and more), so you can see we are all over the place!
