Can anyone recommend a good mic? Reasonable price (from whatever to about $150 apiece) and decent performance a major plus. I hit Google first and got a few doable options, but I reckoned a forum with a bunch of good DIYers was decent place to check in.

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm not looking forward to this aspect of the process (I can usually figure the technical stuff out, but I've got a ridiculously steep goddamn learning curve), but you've given me a lot to work with.
