Genre: Comedy, Discussion, Film & TV Reviews
Released: Weekly (~Wednesdays)

A new podcast from myself and a couple friends of mine, the general premise being to talk about/make fun of films through the framework of creative drinking rules. Each week, we take a new movie, design or use an existing cocktail for each film, and establish three rules and a "finish your drink" line. Those guidelines are then a springboard from which to talk about the movie. It's meant to be half 'Siskel and Ebert with drinks,' half 'party game instruction manual.' There will also be abridged Youtube versions of the episodes, focusing mostly on supercuts of footage from the movie in question.

Please let me know what you think; the format is really rough, and as of this posting there is just the first episode up. We've got some tweaking we're going to do (e.g. substantially improving sound levels, inserting nonlicensed intro/outro music, using audio from the films), but hoping that it turns out all right.

We hope to mostly work from movies suggested by listeners, which you can do by commenting on the Podbean site for the show, or by emailing contact.alcohollywood@gmail.com.

Happy Valentine's Day from Alcohollywood! 'Tis the season for love, and in the 21st century, that also means lovely romantic comedies. While we've covered some stinkers in the past, none come off as more of a blatant product driven by daytime talk shows and the cult of celebrity than 2010's Garry Marshall fluff Valentine's Day! This film is a blend of Love, Actually, Magnolia and Eat Pray Love, in that it's a mixture of small, intertwined stories about love experienced by Rich, Beautiful White People. Along with guest panelist Julia, we've got a lot to say about the film - but be sure to have your custom drink and rules handy at the same time!

This week on Alcohollywood, we're taking our first user request (from A Godsend) and reviewing/playing our drinking game to Pee-Wee's Big Adventure! This 1985 film kickstarted the careers of Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, and Paul Reubens, and follows the story of a bike and the manchild who loves it. The whole film is such an infectious, gonzo ride that you don't mind the fact that PEE-WEE'S THE MOST NORMAL CHARACTER IN THE FILM. Rube Goldberg machines, incessantly crooning train hobos and all-too-fitting cartoon sequences abound in this clear showcase for Tim Burton's cartoonishly macabre vision. Still haven't had enough Bruce Willis drinking game goodness? This week on Alcohollywood, we're checking out the 1997 gonzo sci-fi favorite The Fifth Element! This week on Alcohollywood, we’re tackling our first sports movie AND our first cancer movie with the 1971 ABC Movie of the Week Brian’s Song! The film is a tale of friendship, adversity, and very short shorts, which stars James Caan (of The Godfather and Mickey Blue Eyes fame) and Billy Dee Williams (of Star Wars and The Ladies’ Man: The Movie fame). Together, they navigate the difficulties of interracial friendships and the rigors of a professional football season with a classiness and sophistication atypical of a movie made for television, even today. Check out our drink, our rules and our review – Jared and Clint tackle the usual limitations of made-for-TV movies, the saccharine nature of both sports and terminal illness movies, and how this movie seems to defy both. Be sure to make our drink and pick up a copy of an incredibly heartfelt movie full of both raw emotion and cheezy ’70s goodness – also 12 Angry Men’s Jack Warden in an Emmy-winning supporting role as the coach!

Luckily, we’ve got just the drink to get you through it, as well as our review, which asks all the right questions: What is the Leprechaun doing in space? On a housekeeping note do people think this thread should be split into two. One for just a single post per podcast (possibly with no other posts allowed) and one for ongoing episode listings as this is being used which allows for chat/comments about the podcasts or episodes in between.

I'm just concerned that the people who don't update for every podcast are going to get lost in here and anyone coming for a quick list of goon podcasts will miss them.

I will probably do this thing at some point.

I think it might work; at the very least, I'd love for a 'post your new episode here' thread to encourage actual feedback and listenership among those who frequently post (and I've been pretty bad about that too).

At the same time, given a frequently enough updated OP, that can work just fine in and of itself for the 'quick list of goon podcasts.'

This week, we're starting with a double feature of the two Iron Man movies, directed by Jon Favreau and starring Robert Downey Jr. as charismatic playboy/inventor/perpetually dying Tony Stark. Iron Man proved to a world enamored with brooding superheroes (e.g. Nolan's Batman) that you could successfully do a fun, lighthearted superhero movie, and Iron Man 2 proved that you could really mess up a good formula by shoehorning spinoff material into your main plot. Either way, both movies have their good and bad points, both of which we cover in this episode!

This week on Alcohollywood, we finish up Marvel Month with Joe Johnston’s return to kitschy, pulpy World War II-era comic book adventure, Captain America: The First Avenger! One of the more uneven films in the Marvel cinematic universe, we follow scrawny Steve Rogers in his journey from a brave, but stupid scrawny guy to a brave, but stupid completely ripped guy, whose pecs apparently secrete a sheen of glistening oil. The film also stars Hugo Weaving doing his best Werner Herzog impression as The Mask, a perpetually tired-of-this-poo poo Tommy Lee Jones, and some guy with a huge moustache. The film’s got a great pedigree, and we do love alternate-history pulpy World War II movies, so what do we think of "Band of Brothers with Superheroes"? This week on Alcohollywood, we review The Avengers! Now, we went through Marvel Month so that you, our loyal followers, could be completely ready for this cinematic masterpiece. Unfortunately, it seems our airdate this week comes before the actual release date of the film in the United States, so we thought we’d just cover that OTHER Avengers movie – the 1998 abomination starring Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman as posh, droll British secret agents attempting to stop Sir Sean Connery from holding the British ecosystem for ransom (we think). A disastrous adaptation of the cult 1960s TV show, The Avengers features awful late-90s CGI, a confusing and nonsensical plot, bored, wooden acting, and the lamest excuse for “camp” we’ve ever seen. Put on your bowler hat, sip some tea (British people only drink tea, right? This week on Alcohollywood, we're sailing up the Moon River with the 1961 romantic comedy Breakfast at Tiffany's, starring Audrey Hepburn as the first Manic Pixie Dream Girl, Holly Golightly! Based on the Truman Capote novella, the film follows Paul Varjak (George Peppard, pre-making plans come together in The A-Team), an aspiring writer who falls for the sprightly woman-about-town (Hepburn) and has plenty of 1960s sex comedy antics doing so. The film includes such treats as 1) a horribly offensive Asian stereotype played by Mickey Rooney, 2) dime-store heists in animal masks, and 3) the world's least creatively-named cat.

It’s one of the Coen Brothers’ most well-known and tremendously popular movies; it’s spawned a convention series and a religion, and nearly everyone knows at least one line from this movie. Join hard-boiled detective Harry Callahan (a rapidly aging and crotchety Clint Eastwood) and his new Asian sidekick as they solve a series of murders related to a betting pool called The Dead Pool. Along the way, enjoy early roles from Patricia Clarkson (as Harry’s reporter love interest), Liam Neeson (as an effete British director/prime suspect) and Jim Carrey (as a strung-out rock star who becomes one of the killer’s first victims). This cop movie is mired in 80s excess, and a creaky Clint Eastwood; luckily, however, we’ve got the drink and the rules to get you through it – take a listen and hear our thoughts!
