The Sim Settlements 2 mod is pretty decent at fleshing out the base building and making it a bit more interesting.

Making my way to Novac and there’s that travelling merchant group who get into a few scraps with legion and vipers as i’m walking with them, just outside novac a legion assassin squad attacks me and the merchants and i use every bit of ammo and explosives i have and they still pushed me miles back.

As i’m stood looking at about 20 bodies another assassin squad runs down the road and kills me so fast i’m surprised the game didn’t crash.

Best game ever.

There is a small band of about 3 Vipers sat just between Helios One and the gas station that have been making me laugh. I don’t even know what weapon they have, but I am basically just exploding as soon as they see me.

There's a ton of money to be made in listening for gunfights, and looting the bodies of the losers.

One of them has a grenade rifle, and the leader has a hunting rifle or a .44 pistol. If you're following the recommended route, but you skip the Come Fly With Me quest, that fight is quite a bit tougher than anything you've encountered before.

I think there are Jackals near the Mojave Drive-In who will bean you with a grenade rifle, too.

The only thing I dislike about Old World Blues is how many enemies are just annoying bullet sponges.
the part that's incredibly funny to me is that, until you complete the DLC, the enemies that constantly respawn are actually using the same dozen or so refids and being morphed into different enemies each time they respawn. it's a funny way to avoid the 16 million (reaching refid 0xFF-FFFFFF) refid pitfall that will literally brick a Fallout 3/TTW playthrough should it go on long enough. The Starfield "new game plus" mechanic cleaning up refids (and possibly necessitating erasing all your inventory and stuff) is Bethesda's solution for this.

Is there a resource anywhere on the architecture styles used in the fallout games? I found this neat Twitter thread and I want to know if there's ant design docs out there on how the Fallout art style settled in the chosen building aesthetics.

Also Googie is a very fun word to say.

A lot of Fallout stuff is very 30s/40s which has kind of been forgotten in the popular consciousness. Lollin at that guy saying DC is imposing and sinister because it looks like a European city though.

IMO the art design is the single biggest reason that Fallout is gigantic while so many other post-apocalyptic games or settings fade into the generic label of, well, "post-apocalyptic setting". That heavy Art Deco/30s/40s style of buildings with the peppy 50s pop art for ads just slams down a unique, familiar but strange and imposing world even before you drop nukes on it.

Even beyond architecture, fallout design is incredibly iconic. Power armor. Supermutants. Ghouls. Vault suit. Vault boy. The amount of things that are immediately and unmistakably identifiable as "fallout" across many different games for many different systems by many different creators is pretty amazing. Compare it with let's say the elder scrolls, which has no coherent design across the series whatsoever.

Its kinda funny saving Benny in FNV because the game really doesn't expect it or want it. Its a fun fakeout that, if you persuade him without sleeping with him, he fakes being a questgiver just long enough to kill you, and if you either do that or just fall asleep after sleeping with him you get dialogue in Caesar's tent that I bet 95% of players never see where he ruminates more on why you should take up his plan and his past/etc. And then, if you go with his sneaky-sounding stealth boy plan, he doesn't wait for an opportune moment but just immediately activates it, turning everyone in the room hostile. Whoops!

This is also how I learned that the Legion doesn't just confiscate your weapons but also all your drugs too (except cateye, med-X and stimpaks, for some reason?), which is a nice touch. Thankfully I had every unarmed perk and ballistic fists are inexplicably a holdout weapon because now Caesar is dead and Benny escaped unharmed, never to be seen again. Good luck out there Mr. Chairman :patriot:

Vault suits are the odd man out there. For the others, they all similar vibes across the different games and art styles. But I was so disappointed when they went from the Jetsons style, space-age spandex from 1 and 2, to a blue jeans boiler suit in 3 and New Vegas.

Agreed; "Art Deco/Brutalist/Streamline Moderne/Albert Speeresque"? That's three slashes too many for any kind of coherent claim and the DC characterization's ludicrous.
